I really like using names that aren’t so commonly seen in america/popular in european countries instead. The thing is - much as I like using italian, french, greek, and spanish names I have no connection and limited knowledge of the language and culture and so I feel like an imposter overusing these names and/or using certain ones.
I think it would be better and interesting to pick names that relate back to my own ancestral ethnicity but I don’t know a lot. On my mom’s side of the family I am primarily Swiss, little bit [name_m]German[/name_m] but I’d rather focus on the Swiss portion. Thus far the only name I know and like is Madlaina for girls.
On my dad’s side I am of Romanian descent and I currently know just Madalina (Mădălina in Romania) and [name_f]Catrinel[/name_f], both also for girls. I would like some boy names as well! If anyone has knowledge about either of these places or the language originating there please suggest some names for me, I want to learn more!
If you aren’t familiar with Swiss and/or Romanian names then what do you think of using names that have no relation to your culture for a child? Is it ever acceptable?
hey i’ll start by saying Madlaina, [name_f]Catrinel[/name_f] and Mădălina are gorgeous names. i’m sure you are aware but Switzerland is a very varied in language country, there are four national languages spoken in their respective regions. i’m assuming that you are from german speaking region ? so ‘swiss names’ in a broad sense don’t really exist, unless you mean romansh. i’d also like to note that for me at least, using a name outside of your native language isn’t too big of a deal as long as you are aware of the pronunciation/meaning/connotations behind it. if there’s a name you love, i would say go for it.
anyways i separated the lists into German/Romansh and Romanian, i hope you like these !

Thank you so much this is the biggest list I’ve seen regarding what I’m looking for, and I like almost all of them!
[name_m]Lennart[/name_m]
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_u]Florian[/name_u]
[name_u]Aurel[/name_u]
[name_f]Leni[/name_f]
I actually already had all these ones previously favorited and knew about the [name_m]German[/name_m] in them but was unaware that they are used in Swiss Romansh communities also
Liviu - I want to research this one a bit more. I’m surprised it’s German/Romansh it looks much more like Romanian/Eastern European names do. [name_f]My[/name_f] last name ends in ‘ui’ and so I’m accustomed to associating that combo of letters (or similar) with being Romanian.
[name_m]Valentin[/name_m]
[name_u]Victorin[/name_u]
[name_m]Andrin[/name_m]
Never ever heard the 3 of these before, I especially like [name_u]Victorin[/name_u], I think for a girl it would be a perfect middle or a perfect first for a boy!
[name_f]Ileana[/name_f]
[name_m]Alexandru[/name_m]
[name_m]Vasile[/name_m]
[name_f]Irina[/name_f]
[name_f]Ecaterina[/name_f]
[name_f]Elisabeta[/name_f]
[name_m]Constantin[/name_m]
Wouldn’t you know it but I had favorited them all a long time ago and not even remembered!! (Alexandru has to be my favorite variant of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] that there is currently out there).
I wonder if different spellings change the origin of a name though? For instance, [name_f]Ecaterina[/name_f] or [name_f]Ekaterina[/name_f]? And [name_f]Irina[/name_f] or [name_f]Irena[/name_f]?
[name_f]Daria[/name_f]
Silviu
[name_u]Mattia[/name_u]
[name_f]Sorina[/name_f]
Crina
[name_f]Florina[/name_f]
[name_f]Ioana[/name_f]
[name_m]Florin[/name_m]
[name_m]Timoteo[/name_m] (led me to find Timeo!)
[name_m]Mihai[/name_m]
All 10 are completely knew to me and I can’t wait to google them a bit more lol. I especially like Silviu, Crina, [name_u]Mattia[/name_u], and Florin/a.
I went to school with a boy named [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] (Soar-een). His parents had immigrated here from Romania. Other members of his family include Nicolᴀɛ and Corinᴀ.
I also went to school with brothers who immigrated here from Romania. There names were Clᴀudiu (Clᴀus) and 0vidiu (0vi). One of their middle names was Mircɛᴀ (I think) and the other was Mihᴀi. Other family members hold the names Mɛlᴀniᴀ (Mɛlᴀniɛ), Alɛxᴀndrᴀ, Stɛfᴀniᴀ and Lᴀurɛntiu.
I’m becoming a big fan of [name_m]Sorin[/name_m] and the feminine [name_f]Sorina[/name_f]!
It’s a very distinct sound I just love.I alos like [name_f]Corina[/name_f], [name_m]Claudiu[/name_m], [name_m]Mircea[/name_m], and Ovidiu out of the names you have listed.
I’ve never heard of Liserli but she has the perfect crispiness when it comes to feminine sounds
I was roaming around online and I found [name_m]Ilie[/name_m] - a Romanian variant of [name_u]Elias[/name_u] for boys.
Pronounced ill-E-yah it reminds me a lot of the Russian [name_m]Ilya[/name_m] (and I know the pronounciations are completely different, it’s probably just the look) and I really liked [name_m]Ilya[/name_m] when I first found it so now I’m oh so happy I have a name from my own lineage that I can use instead!
Also, Italian, [name_u]French[/name_u], and [name_m]German[/name_m] are spoken in different regions of Switzerland, and you mentioned that you liked a lot of those names. If you look into it, some were also used in those parts of Switzerland. Not all, of course, but some.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] something I thought I’d mention :).
wow you are very much welcome aha i am glad you like the names ! i think the spelling variations in names are something to do with the colonisation throughout history [name_m]Ilie[/name_m] is very handsome
