Names too close?

Our daughter is named [name_f]Alaya[/name_f]. We like the name [name_f]Aliza[/name_f] for our second daughter. Are the names too close?
We can’t find any other names that we like as much and it has to start with an A. We’ve gone through so many lists. [name_u]Will[/name_u] the girls get annoyed with similar names? Anyone have experience?

Are you pronouncing [name_f]Alaya[/name_f] like uh-lay-uh or uh-lie-uh? If it’s with the LAY sound then I think you could maybe get away with it if you really can’t come up with any better name, but just barely. What about Adaliza to make it a little bit more different? [name_u]Or[/name_u] some other girl names I have that start and end with A are:
[name_f]Acacia[/name_f]
[name_f]Adalia[/name_f]
[name_f]Adalina[/name_f]
[name_u]Ahsoka[/name_u]
[name_u]Akira[/name_u] / Akyra
[name_f]Alara[/name_f]
[name_u]Alba[/name_u]
[name_f]Alodia[/name_f]
[name_f]Alora[/name_f]
Amala
[name_f]Amora[/name_f]
Anahla
[name_f]Ariana[/name_f]
[name_f]Ariella[/name_f]
[name_f]Asha[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f]
[name_f]Atta[/name_f]
[name_f]Avaya[/name_f]
[name_f]Avia[/name_f]
[name_f]Aviana[/name_f]
[name_f]Aviella[/name_f]

It’s pronounced uh-lay-uh.

Unfortunately, I think it’s too close. Three of the five letters are the same which make them really close. Maybe something like Alessia?

Hmmm usually Im of the opinion that you should go with what you love.

However these might be too similar for me. Especially since they both naturally shorten to ‘Ali’

Some other options you might consider…

I think [name_f]Aliza[/name_f] is too close but [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] isn’t

They are a little close for me, personally. Having had two friends with very similar names to their siblings
(think [name_f]Alina[/name_f], [name_f]Amina[/name_f] and Arina) who were slightly bothered by it. Still, I don’t think they’re entirely unusuable, but I’d probably keep looking too

These two are very close. I knew a girl sibling set with 3 names that all begin with the same letters and all have the same number of syllables. No adults at church could ever remember which name went with which girl. I’ve even experienced this personally with siblings named [name_u]Daniel[/name_u] and [name_u]David[/name_u]. I can’t remember which is which.

If that’s the only name you can love, then do it anyway. But it might be confusing for non-family members. I thought the suggestion above of [name_f]Araluen[/name_f] was cool.

Adalaida (a-da-LIE-da) / [name_f]Adalida[/name_f] / [name_f]Adeliza[/name_f]
[name_u]Athaliah[/name_u] (ath-uh-LIE-uh) I put this here because it has similar sounds to [name_f]Aliza[/name_f], but this was a woman in the Bible who was truly evil (2 Kings 11). So please use it as a jumping off point, and not as a baby name.
[name_f]Aneliz[/name_f]
[name_u]Arizona[/name_u]
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f] (possibly still too close, but at least avoids repeating the [name_m]Al[/name_m] beginning)
[name_f]Arista[/name_f] (legitimate name from the same Greek root as “aristocrat”)
[name_u]Azari[/name_u]
[name_f]Azenor[/name_f] (Breton for “light”)
[name_f]Azucena[/name_f] (means lily)
[name_u]Azul[/name_u] / [name_f]Azula[/name_f] (means blue) or [name_u]Azure[/name_u] / [name_f]Azura[/name_f] (also blue)
[name_f]Azriella[/name_f] (feminine form of [name_m]Azriel[/name_m] - [name_m]God[/name_m] is my help)
[name_f]Avril[/name_f]

[name_f]Amarie[/name_f] (I pronounce this ah-ma-REE) Emphasizing a different syllable will also help differentiate the A-beginning names.
[name_f]Ambrosia[/name_f]
[name_f]Amity[/name_f] (I say this with a short A, as in ant)
[name_f]Annika[/name_f]
[name_f]Anya[/name_f]

[name_f]Adrianne[/name_f] or [name_f]Adrianna[/name_f] or [name_f]Adriana[/name_f] (The long A sound also helps to separate the names)
Avianne or [name_f]Aviana[/name_f]
[name_f]Ailani[/name_f]
[name_f]April[/name_f]

There’s also this other A sound, more like AH than UH. AR as in star:
[name_f]Aravis[/name_f] (or you could use the AIR sound here, if you prefer)
[name_f]Araceli[/name_f]
[name_f]Arcadia[/name_f]
[name_u]Arlington[/name_u]

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Astraia[/name_f] (I’m saying this as rhyming with [name_f]Maia[/name_f] / [name_f]Maya[/name_f]: Ast-RYE-uh)

[name_f]Aisha[/name_f] (there are various pronunciations: Ay-sha, Ah-ee-sha. I prefer EYE-sha. Then the name starts with A, but sounds like it starts with I.)
This brings us to another genre of A names: ones that sound like I.
[name_u]Aio[/name_u] (EYE-o)
[name_f]Airi[/name_f] or [name_f]Airis[/name_f]
[name_f]Aitana[/name_f]
[name_f]Aizia[/name_f]

Yep too close.

What about [name_f]Alina[/name_f]?
