I really like the idea of having multiple levels of formality in a name. I think my ideal might be to have the full, formal name used only on special occasions; the everyday version; the endearing nickname; and one syllable used for convenience. So for instance, a girl could go by [name]Christa[/name] or [name]Josie[/name] in general but be [name]Chrissie[/name] or [name]JoJo[/name] to intimates in tender moments and [name]Christabel[/name] or [name]Josephine[/name] on certificates. [name]Chris[/name] and [name]Jo[/name] could be used when the speaker’s being lazy.
What do you Nameberryites think of this? And can you come up with other names that offer formal, normal, sweet, and short versions? I haven’t been able to think of one for a boy yet.
I like the idea. My instinct is always to go with the full, formal name with the option of the nickname rather than giving the nickname (shorter version) as the given name. Either that or just go by the full given name, period.
My own name has evolved into a kind of “four levels” as well…full formal Italian name, shorter “everyday” name (easier to say and pronounce), a family nickname and then the first three letters used when someone (usually my husband! lol) is hollering for me.
Ricamaca – I know three is easier, but I prefer four.
Also, I realized that one thing that’s unclear about my post is that I like when all the nicknames are from the same part of the name (eg, I would use [name]Josephine[/name]/[name]Josie[/name]/[name]JoJo[/name]/[name]Jo[/name], not [name]Josephine[/name]/[name]Josie[/name]/[name]Fifi[/name]/[name]Jo[/name]).
[name]Victoria[/name]- [name]How[/name] about [name]Ziggy[/name]/Zekey as a cutesey nickname for [name]Ezekiel[/name]? I’ve always loved that posibility.
I’m going to do my family and include nicknames we really use… I added a few, too. For some there is just no way to get 4!
