Names you can't use?

Are there any names that you would like to use but can’t? Either, they’ve been used already, don’t work well with other children’s names or the last name, or have a bad connection to someone else.

for me, the names are [name]Conner[/name] (I really like this, but unfortunately a guy I met a few years ago ruined it for me!) and [name]Skyler[/name] (for a boy, Its been used already by a friend)

I’m curious to hear your stories  thanks for sharing!

I really love [name]Edmund[/name] but would want to use the nn [name]Ned[/name], which has an awful connection for DH :frowning: I also really love [name]Beatrix[/name] but he thinks it’s completely ridiculous. I need to find a way to get him desensitized to some of my “weird” names. If only he was a [name]Berry[/name].

I have so many of these. I even made a list of them here on Nameberry.

Top ones:
[name]Edward[/name] (Too Twilight)
[name]Gallagher[/name] (Knew someone in high school with the name, don’t want people to think it’s after him)
[name]Gustav[/name] (I named my cat [name]Gus[/name], so can’t use it on a child)
[name]Jake[/name] (My brother’s name is [name]Jacob[/name])
[name]Russell[/name] (My husband works with a [name]Russell[/name], and most likely will for the foreseeable future)
[name]Adam[/name] (Friends with an [name]Adam[/name])
[name]Basil[/name] (Pronunciation issues)
[name]Mabel[/name] (Clashes with my last name)
[name]Amelia[/name] (Husband has a horrible cousin with the name)
[name]Erin[/name] (My aunt married an adulterous man named [name]Aaron[/name])
[name]Hermione[/name] (Too [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name])

Well I just found out my husband does not care about middle names at all, so I could use these, they just don’t flow well with our first name favorites:

[name]Euphemia[/name]
[name]Artemis[/name]
[name]Artemisia[/name]

The one other name I can’t use unless I have twins or 2 girls is: [name]Flora[/name] (it rhymes too much with my sister in law’s daughter, [name]Nora[/name] and don’t want to appear as a copycat, so for me to be comfortable using it, I have to have a [name]Luna[/name] first)

Haha, I hope that holds true for you. My DH repeatedly said this at the beginning of name negotiations and yet was absurdly opinionated when it actually came down to it! Of course now I know how to end up with the name I want… it’s amazing what a man will agree to while his wife is in labor  I would have saved myself so much searching effort if I had known this ahead of time!

[name]Sofia[/name], it was my favorite for a long time, since I was a child, but now every newborn girl is named [name]Sofia[/name].
There’s also my actual favorite name [name]Aglaia[/name]. I’m not sure I will be able to use it because too many people think of the word “ugly” when they hear it. I usually don’t care about teasing potential of unusual names, but in this case I don’t feel comfortable with the word association.
[name]Zeno[/name] because I know too many children with this name and some of them are sons of friends, it was in my shortlist in the past and I would have at least used it as middle name.
[name]Iris[/name], it was one of my middle name options but now it’s my sister’s favorite.
All the non-italian names I like, because I don’t see the point of using a name that has nothing to do with the baby’s and mine origins. But I’m single and I don’t know who the father of my future child will be, so who knows.

Kennedy.

[name]Love[/name] it…until I hear the meaning. ‘Ugly head’, seriously? [name]Just[/name] ruins it for me :frowning:

I can’t use:

[name]Remy[/name] or [name]Ben[/name] - They both rhyme with/sound too close to my name "-_-

[name]Kit[/name], [name]Tom[/name] or [name]Rory[/name] - Exes or guys I liked.

[name]Valentina[/name] - [name]One[/name] of my best friends names.

[name]Holly[/name] - It’s far too popular :frowning:

[name]Iris[/name] - With the middle name [name]Rose[/name] it just doesn’t flow properly.

I always planned on calling my first daughter Everleigh but when I had a few wines I accidentally told my friend. She had already decided to call her daughter [name]Harper[/name] but 3 months later she gave birth to Everleigh. I cried for a week!

That’s terrible! Really, really bad friend form!! I’d be so pissed.

Well I always liked the name [name]Rosalie[/name], but I cannot use it as it is the name of my dad’s ex-wife [who he was married to long before I was born]. There’s also the Twilight connection, which annoys me, but not as much as the name [name]Esme[/name] being associated with that because I had always thought that’d make a lovely middle name.

[name]Eric[/name] is another name I like, but it’s the name of my nephew.

I’ve also liked the “[name]Jess[/name]” type names, [name]Jessica[/name], [name]Jessamine[/name], etc, but I don’t think it’d be a good idea given that [name]Jessica[/name] was the name of my child’s father’s ex.

[name]Laura[/name] was a name I used to love [I reckon because of [name]Little[/name] House on the [name]Prairie[/name]] until I met a person by that name who was very nasty.

Names starting with S, which sucks because there’s quite a few I like and my own name starts with an S. Problem is people getting my name confused with other people who I don’t like names because they start with the same letter.

L heavy names, I love names like [name]Lila[/name], [name]Layla[/name], [name]Lilith[/name] and such but with the last name, it might create a tongue twister. It also rules out names ending in L because I don’t want the first name to run into the last name.

[name]Ophelia[/name]- I [name]LOVE[/name] it but my boyfriend absolutely hates it. Like, it’s his number one must veto name.

[name]Catherine[/name]- My sister used it for one of my niece’s middle name.

[name]Juliet[/name]- My niece is [name]Juliana[/name] and that’s obviously just way too close.

[name]Renee[/name]- I always planned to use it as a middle name because my oldest sister and my best friend both have [name]Renee[/name] as a middle name, but my boyfriend’s ex was named [name]Renee[/name].

[name]Annabel[/name]- My best friend and I both have it on our short list. We’ve decided that whoever goes first gets to make the choice whether to use it or not. Neither of us is calling dibs or has decided 100% to use it, but she’ll most likely have kids first, so…

[name]Olivia[/name]- It just got way too popular for me and my boyfriend doesn’t really like it.

[name]Willow[/name] - my boyfriend’s name is [name]Will[/name] (his problem, not mine)
[name]Damien[/name] - my brother-in-law
[name]Lucy[/name] - sister-in-law
[name]Anoushka[/name], [name]Valentina[/name], [name]Derek[/name] - close friends
[name]Iris[/name], [name]Calypso[/name], [name]Scarlett[/name], [name]Iben[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Reuben[/name] - children I’m close to.

Rikke & Balder- Beautiful in Scandinavia, not in english

[name]Ophelia[/name] & [name]Lavinia[/name] - my boyfriend has problems with tragic Shakespearian women
[name]Hermes[/name] - I don’t want people to think I named my kid after a designer label…especially a label I wouldn’t buy.
[name]Nemo[/name] - Because of the movie

Oh, and anything starting with El- or ending in -s, because of surname.

[name]Lucifer[/name] - I know I’m going to get flack for the fact that it’s on of my favorites. I would never use it for a child though, for very obvious reasons.

Kalayna & [name]Echo[/name] - they are both so far outside of my usual style also they wouldn’t work with my or my SO ln or any mn options I like. (It’s a good think I don’t [name]LOVE[/name] them).

[name]Phillipa[/name] & [name]Roberta[/name] - a second cousin named his daughters [name]Phillipa[/name] and [name]Roberta[/name]. Our mothers are too close for it not to be obvious that I copied them (and lets face it, I hadn’t considered either name before I meet the girls).

Faekin - because I made it up. I love the idea of naming a child after the [name]Fae[/name] (and I don’t really like [name]Fay[/name] or [name]Faye[/name] with SO/my ln’s) but I will never be able to just make up a name - no matter how much I love it and actually use it for a child. (A pet maybe).

Let’s see:
Any names with the th sound which is a shame because I’ve loved [name]Athena[/name] since Greek mythology in High School.
Any names with J which stinks because I really love the name [name]Jake[/name] for a boy.
Unfortunately, I am an expat living in a country where neither of these syllables would work.
:frowning:

[name]Ava[/name] because I can’t have [name]Avery[/name] for a boy and [name]Ava[/name] for a girl. I decided to leave [name]Avery[/name] on my list.

[name]Cameron[/name] for a boy because my DH just doesn’t like it at all. :frowning:

[name]Morgan[/name] for a boy- DH doesn’t like it at all because it is “too girl” for him and I know a female [name]Morgan[/name]. :frowning: I’d love to put it in the middle though. If we ever move and aren’t around the [name]Morgan[/name] we know, I may talk him into it!

  • [name]Amelia[/name] or any other name that starts with an A (can’t use as a first name since the first initial will not go well with the last name if used like in an email alastname@yahoo)
  • [name]Maddox[/name] (didn’t really care for the name until my co-worker used it for her son)
  • [name]Ann[/name] ( i want to honor my mother by using ann but it is my grandmother’s middle name-my mom’s mom- and i can’t stand her so it brings bad association)
  • [name]Kelsey[/name] (too close to chelsea- my new step sister’s name)
  • [name]Gabriel[/name] (my friend’s son’s name)
  • [name]Renee[/name] (cousin’s middle name)
  • [name]Brendon[/name] (cousin’s son)
  • [name]Olivia[/name] (my favorite but boyfriend’s best friend’s daughter has this name)
  • [name]Hunter[/name] [name]Lee[/name] (my mom wanted to name my sister or i [name]Hunter[/name] or [name]Parker[/name] if we were boys- that didn’t work out- i can’t use parker since i work with a guy that goes by his last name-parker. [name]Lee[/name] is a family name passed down to boys and girls alike so that won’t change [name]Lee[/name] or me but my cousin has named his first son [name]Hunter[/name] [name]Lee[/name] so that full name is out. )

Um, yes. My daughter was supposed to be named [name]Elle[/name]. I had been planning on it for years. I made a HUGE mistake by telling my plan to the wrong person - a friend who also happens to have the same last name as us. I couldn’t believe it when I saw the birth announcement. She totally STOLE my name! I guess I inspired her. Should I be flattered? I’m not. I agonized about my daughter’s name for months because of it and she wasn’t even named until the day we left the hospital.

Anything beginning or ending in L, or heavy with Ls in the middle because of our surname. It’s a pity, though, because I absolutely love the names [name]Liam[/name], [name]Leo[/name], [name]Levi[/name], [name]Lila[/name], [name]Isabel[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], and [name]Cecily[/name].

Anything ending in A because DH’s accent turns the A sound into -ER ([name]Gemma[/name] becomes Gemmer, etc.). I think it’s kinda cute, but he gets embarrassed, poor guy. Again, this stinks. I love the names [name]Ava[/name], [name]Stella[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], [name]Ella[/name], [name]Isla[/name] and [name]Zara[/name].

[name]Jemima[/name] - I absolutely love this name and would use it in a heartbeat, in spite of the A at the end, but living in the States makes it inadvisable, at best. I would consider moving to the UK just for [name]Jemima[/name], but DH says it was too difficult to get here to turn around and go back, lol

[name]Brenna[/name] - I read the name in a book and fell in love but made the mistake of telling my [name]SIL[/name]. Two weeks later… well, you know the story.
[name]Henry[/name]… or [name]Harry[/name] - I never can decide which I like better, but I know I’ve got to chose one. I’m leaning toward [name]Henry[/name] today.
[name]Cadence[/name] - I think it’s so pretty, but it’s absolutely impossible with our surname.
[name]Bridget[/name] - This was at the top of my list for a long time, but DH wrinkled his nose at it. Blah.
[name]Nahla[/name], [name]Sanaa[/name], [name]Thandie[/name], [name]Zuri[/name], [name]Sunday[/name], [name]January[/name], [name]Winter[/name], [name]Matteo[/name], [name]Cruz[/name] and [name]Luca[/name] - DH likes “traditional” English names. Blah again.

The list of unusable names for us is extensive. We have very large extended families. Three of our four parents have at least 7 siblings who also have had kids and some of them have had kids. Therefore, most traditional names (at least the ones I would consider) have been taken. My wife is also a teacher so she has had many names ruined for her either through overuse or problematic students that have implanted a permanent impression of the name. The names that would be on the top of my list but are unusable include:

[name]Gage[/name]
[name]Patrick[/name]
[name]Douglas[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Zachary[/name]
[name]Don[/name] (I liked [name]Donovan[/name])
[name]Meredith[/name]
nn [name]Bree[/name] (I liked [name]Brielle[/name])

etc etc
