Names you’d veto

Which names would you certainly veto even if they were your spouse or partner’s number one pick?

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband has long claimed to love [name_m]Lucius[/name_m] but its a hard no from me :joy: [name_m]Just[/name_m] sounds evil.

[name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_m]Nickolas[/name_m], and [name_m]Christopher[/name_m]- Probably the most common names where I’m from in school there was always at least two of each in every class and none of them were pleasant
Bartholmew- sound like an evil side kick to me
[name_u]Edward[/name_u]- reminds me of squidward :slightly_frowning_face:also a kid named [name_u]Edward[/name_u] threw a desk at me once
[name_f]Beyonce[/name_f]- I’ve met two but I would never use it

Honestly, put a name in front of me long enough and I’ll start to like it. Someone I love telling me why they love a certain name? I’ll probably start to love it too! I’m quite suggestable :woman_shrugging: There are a few, though, that I’d say no to without much thought. [name_u]Carter[/name_u], [name_u]Cooper[/name_u] and [name_u]Bentley[/name_u]. There’s nothing wrong with these names, I just don’t love them enough to put the ‘recently dated’ feeling away, and I’d rather compromise on a different name.

I would veto traditional boy names on girls (and likewise traditional girl names on boys, though that doesn’t happen often). Other names that come to mind:

Richard
Athena
Astrid
Aster

Basically, any name that’s NOT on my list, or has never been on my list. I can’t think of any in specific, but if I’ve never considered it I don’t like it.

Good point! This is probably true for most reasonable names for me too.

Jason, Owen, Megan, Marissa, all variations of the name Angela. People I once knew ruined those names for me. I also despise most Christian names bcuz I live in the Bible Belt and they are SO overused. But that’s the only reason. They’d be perfectly good names if they weren’t so common.

I wouldn’t hard veto many names, but I’m a tough sell if it’s not on my list!

I hate to say it because I’m really trying to care less, but anything Top 100 popular would be difficult — with a few exceptions that I love and still feel a bit quirky due to sound or style, like [name_m]Felix[/name_m] or [name_f]Zara[/name_f].

I don’t tend to love surnamey names either, but there’s a growing list of exceptions to that too!

I think for a hard veto ultimately it comes down to names with seriously negative associations or controversial backstories (Adolf, [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m], [name_u]Cohen[/name_u], [name_u]Roma[/name_u] :sob:).

Otherwise, I’m willing to hear you out but I’ll take some convincing!

Names of people I’ve grown up with or went to school with; beyond that family and friends that I do not want to honour with said name.
That doesn’t necessarily go for longer or shorter versions of their names, [name_u]Leo[/name_u] could still be on the table even though a close childhood friend was [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] (pronounced Leo-nard) and even though a good friend of mine’s full name is [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], I wouldn’t veto [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] as thy feel quite different from one another.

One name I’d definitely veto is [name_u]Luca[/name_u], I’ve known too many horrid ones and couldn’t get past that; at least not as a first name.
Oh and Hazel; I don’t care if you have a grandma named [name_u]Hazel[/name_u] that your family owes everything to, we will find another way to honour her - I don’t hate name, don’t hate the sound but the look of it just, idk why but it irks me, I just cannot get behind it, like at all!

Tbh, I think it would be quite easy to sell relatively popular names to me while I would struggle more with very unusual names unless they contained some of my favourite sounds.

Hmmm i think I’d veto fairly common names like [name_u]William[/name_u], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_u]Daniel[/name_u], or trendy ish names like [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_u]Axel[/name_u], [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_u]Addison[/name_u], names like that if that were the case.
If I was in another country or with a Slavic person I’d probably veto;
[name_f]Mia[/name_f], [name_m]Marko[/name_m] (my cousins name. I also have bad associations w this names from the amount of [name_m]Markos[/name_m] I know at school who arent very nice…), Aleksandar (cousins name + too popular for my liking lol), [name_f]Mila[/name_f] (love it but it’s becoming super popular + it’s close to my aunts name - Milena), [name_f]Vera[/name_f] (aunts name), [name_m]Filip[/name_m] (cousins), [name_u]Luka[/name_u] (love it but just too popular right now), Dejan (kind of popular + I don’t like the sound of it :joy:) [name_f]Mia[/name_f] (love it but too popular), [name_f]Aleksa[/name_f] (cousins name), [name_m]Petar[/name_m] (too popular ish + I have a friend w this name and it feels a little awkward to me w that association :joy: ), [name_f]Nadja[/name_f] (love it but way too close to my mom’s name), [name_m]Viktor[/name_m] (awful association w this name haha), [name_m]Damir[/name_m] (this name is so cute and wonderful; but it’s a little too popular) and most names that are popular among older people (minus a few exceptions) and most names with mir or slav ending in them - idk a lot of people I know whose name ends in mir or slav aren’t very peaceful :joy:

Really would consider most names - it’s a collaborative decision. Give me enough time and I’ll get used to it.

But when I said “something biblical,” I wasn’t anticipating DH being so serious about Methuselah !!!

Been a while and I’m still not sold, sorry dear!

Names like [name_m]Adolf[/name_m] and [name_m]Lucifer[/name_m] and names of close friends and family members who I don’t want to honor

[name_f]Veronica[/name_f], [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], Paula/Paola/Pauline, Anna/Hannah = real life bad associations
and I would also veto top 50 names in my country.

I think I would give most names a fair shot. Popularity isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker for me - not all popular names seem overused to me.

I would be uncomfortable with:
Names of ex-partners, either mine or his
Any name I have a bad personal association with, e.g. [name_u]Shane[/name_u] (because of a horrible person I used to know with that name)
Any name with obvious teasing potential or a troublesome association, e.g. [name_f]Isis[/name_f]
