[name]Ava[/name] - This was going to be my son’s name had he been a girl (back in 1999, when it didn’t even make the top 100!). Now it has become so trendy and overused and my cousin named her daughter [name]Ava[/name] at the height of it’s popularity, so even if I could get over the trendiness, it’s out. It was so much more appealing when it wasn’t so common anyway.
[name]Elle[/name] - After I got over [name]Ava[/name], my top pick for a girl was [name]Elle[/name]. I made the mistake of telling it to a friend with the same last name as me who then turned around and named her daughter [name]Elle[/name]. I [name]MAY[/name] actually still use [name]Elle[/name] as a short form of a longer name, though. I listed it here because I feel like I can’t use “MY” name anymore. It feels like it’s been claimed… or more like stolen, since she got the idea from me.
[name]Lucy[/name] - If I named my daughter [name]Lucy[/name], I’d be doing to another friend what the [name]Elle[/name] friend did to me.
[name]Grace[/name] - DH loves this name, but it does not sound right with our last name. Plus I already have a cousin with a daughter named [name]Grace[/name].
[name]Sophie[/name] - I might be considering this name, if it wasn’t already my niece’s name.
[name]Ella[/name] - Pretty, but trendy. After our friend used [name]Elle[/name], people suggested using [name]Ella[/name] instead. No. There was a reason I preferred [name]Elle[/name]. [name]Ella[/name] is the more obvious form of that name. [name]Elle[/name] is not as common, it sounds more sophisticated and I think it ages better than [name]Ella[/name]. [name]Ella[/name] would always feel like a second choice name to me if I used it because that’s exactly what it is - a less appealing (to me) version of the name I really like.
[name]Lily[/name] - DH also likes this name, but we have friends who [name]JUST[/name] named their daughter [name]Lily[/name]. Besides, its way too common.
[name]Belle[/name] - Another name that was mentioned after [name]Elle[/name] was taken. DH has a cousin named who named her daughter [name]Belle[/name]. I would still consider using it as a middle name, if I had the right first name for it.
[name]Eleanor[/name] - The most obvious name to shorten to [name]Elle[/name]. I MIGHT have considered this name, but a co-worker who is due a month before me is naming her daughter [name]Eleanor[/name] and calling her [name]Ellie[/name] for short. I know co-workers aren’t “forever” friends, but it would be bad timing for 2 babies in a row at work to have the same name - and mine would be the 2nd one. Still, it’s a little irritating, since she knew about my [name]Elle[/name] dilemma.
Adele - I thought the name Adele was so pretty…and then the singer showed up on the scene. She’s TOO popular. You can’t hear the name Adele without thinking of her, and that annoys me.
There are so many more…I can find something wrong with nearly every name - even if I like it. Most of the ones I mentioned here are more upsetting to me because they are names that are/would be on my short list. I either liked before they were too common, or they have been used by someone else, making them feel unusable.
…AND…This baby is a girl, but for a boy, I’ve always liked [name]Aiden[/name]. BUT, because of it’s popularity and the whole (annoying) anything rhyming with [name]Aiden[/name] trend, it is out. [name]Even[/name] if I still wanted it, DH has nixed it for that reason. It sucks because it sounds good with my other son’s names. A shame, because it really is a nice boy’s name.
