We’ve all got at least one. Are there any names you like that everyone else craps on or else is so indifferent to them that they never ever get mentioned on this site?
I’ve got a few:
[name_f]Heidi[/name_f]: I feel like I’m the only person on the planet that likes this name.
[name_f]Heather[/name_f]: Many people seem to think this is dull and outdated, but I love it.
[name_f]Amanda[/name_f]: See above.
[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]: This is a pretty popular name for dogs (or it was, at least) so perhaps that’s why people dislike it. I’ve seen it getting some love lately though.
[name_f]Birdie[/name_f]: I’ve got no clue why I like this name, I just do.
[name_m]Jackson[/name_m]: Why all the hate? I think [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] is an awesome name, for a little boy or a dog.
[name_u]Lyle[/name_u]: I don’t think anyone has named their kid this in a good 40 years, but for some reason I like the way it sounds.
[name_m]Carl[/name_m]: Most people seem to think it’s an ‘old man name’ but I personally disagree.
What are your favorite over hated/under appreciated names?
[name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Heather[/name_f], and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] are all awesome in my book! [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] especially!
I really like [name_f]Althea[/name_f], and my hubby has an odd love of [name_f]Mildred[/name_f]. I think those are our most “You don’t really like that, do you?” names!
I like [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], and I have a really awesome friend called [name_f]Heather[/name_f], so I have a soft spot for the name (and don’t see it as dated). [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] is really popular here. And I love [name_f]Althaia[/name_f]/ [name_f]Alethea[/name_f]/[name_f]Althea[/name_f] (most names with that sort of sound), and I kind of like [name_f]Mildred[/name_f], but then again I love [name_f]Phyllis[/name_f] and [name_f]Roberta[/name_f] too, partly due to the railway children. There also seems to be a lot of hate to go round for [name_f]Trixie[/name_f]; either it’s a “stripper name” or there’s some other horrible personal association. And [name_f]Clio[/name_f], although well relieved by quite a few people on here, a lot of people also think it looks like a pet name for… well you can probably work it out, yet no one seems to see it with [name_f]Clytie[/name_f].
Names I love that nobody either likes or isn’t fond of are: [name_f]Jessamine[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m], [name_f]Guinevere[/name_f], [name_f]Theodora[/name_f], [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. There are plenty more but these are some of my favourite names and nobody really cares for them.
I have a thing for names from Mythology, but I don’t think I’d ever name a kid [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] or Tiresias. I also get weird looks when I say I like the name [name_f]Zelda[/name_f]. I also had an affair with the name [name_u]Hero[/name_u] once, but after people started to assume it was the Japanese boy’s name, that one got thrown out really quickly.
[name_u]North[/name_u] I like for a girl, but after [name_u]Kim[/name_u] and [name_m]Kanye[/name_m] used it for their baby, I’m reluctant to claim I like it.
For boys, I think the Danish name [name_m]Jesper[/name_m] (pronounced Yes-per) is really cool. Everyone I’ve asked says they don’t like it, but I’m in love with it. It’s a name I’d really love to use, but because of the fact it’s tricky to read in English and the fact no one cares for it, I suppose I have to file it under ‘guilty pleasure’. [name_m]Denali[/name_m] is another one that I like that no one else does. I just think it sounds very interesting, but it’s probably not the best choice for a baby who’s going to have to grow up with it.
I like [name_f]Heidi[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] and [name_u]Lyle[/name_u]!
My ultimate guilty pleasure is Edelweiss and it doesn’t get much love at all. I understand; it’s hard to spell, clunky, and would be difficult to use in English (and illegal to use in other countries, I believe!). But I absolutely adore it!
Some others that don’t strike many people’s fancies…[name_f]Frieda[/name_f] , [name_f]Hilda[/name_f] and Inga
My top names would totally be [name_f]Maude[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f], if everyone didn’t hate them. I absolutely love them. I also really love [name_m]Clarence[/name_m], which is a family name. Another one I love is [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f].
Honestly: [name_m]Ian[/name_m] [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]. Most people love those names, separately, together this name rhymes and that is apparently a bad thing. I will disagree. I think this is one of those cases, that I like a name and am going to use a name that other people may not want to use or even like. If I have another boy.
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m]
[name_m]Darius[/name_m]
[name_u]Elias[/name_u] (this one doesn’t get as much flack as the others)
[name_m]Simon[/name_m]
[name_u]Dexter[/name_u]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_u]Valentine[/name_u]
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] is probably the top one that people seem to dislike on here. Thankfully, it’s a pretty familiar and normal name in the UK so I don’t need to worry about that.
[name_f]Arabella[/name_f] is another one but it got weird looks [name_m]IRL[/name_m] when I told my family about it. [name_m]Ah[/name_m] well.
Oh baby… I love names from Greek mythology, classical literature/poetry, sci-fi, [name_f]Star[/name_f] trek, etc… so I get a lot of raised eyebrows when I talk about names I like. I’ve learned to keep it a secret until the birth is announced. When I announced my daughter’s first name (Utopia) at her baby shower, I actually got yelled at for choosing such a “terrible” name that “she will grow up hating” (she’s 10, loves her name, and doesn’t get teased). Nobody seems to know or be able to pronounce my son’s name, [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]. It was one of the most common names in the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] empire, and seemed like a perfectly natural choice to me. I don’t call him [name_m]Ti[/name_m] or [name_m]Ty[/name_m], just [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]. He’s 6, has no trouble saying or spelling his name, and doesn’t get teased. I think it’s a pretty awesome name, myself. LOL.
I’m planning on #3 in the next year or so, and have already started making name lists, and they are full of names I love that most people I know don’t. For a boy: [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m], [name_m]Syrus[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m] are probably the most normal ones on there.
For a girl: [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] is my absolute favorite, followed by Auliya.
My name lists are full of the same… Though I have to say, my one guilty pleasure name (for a girl) is [name_u]Winter[/name_u]. I love love love it as a name, nobody else I know seems to agree

I also love [name_f]Heidi[/name_f] and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f]! My husband told me [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] was a dogs name haha. It’s popular in the US now though so I’m assuming it’ll catch up in the UK soon.
I love [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] (which most people seem to agree on) but I only like the nickames [name_m]Ted[/name_m]/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u] and everybody seems to think they’re silly
I love the name [name_f]Cheryl[/name_f], which is generally seen as dated. I think it has a lovely, bright, sweet sound, and it also so happens that every [name_f]Cheryl[/name_f] I’ve known has been an amazing person.
Names that I think at least a couple others on here like but no one I’ve told [name_m]IRL[/name_m] does: [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], [name_f]Maven[/name_f]/[name_f]Mavis[/name_f]
Names that some consider too closely tied to a character: [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
Names that are a bit clunky/old-guy sounding but I adore: [name_u]Gus[/name_u], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], [name_m]Wilfred[/name_m], [name_u]Ira[/name_u], [name_m]Winston[/name_m]
Others: [name_u]Zuri[/name_u] (“too weird”), [name_u]River[/name_u] (“too hippie”), [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] (I know this is super “trendy,” but I can’t help but adore it, also although it is popular on name lists, none of my friends/family like it either)
Finally, I love some of the names others have mentioned! Especially [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] with the nn [name_m]Ted[/name_m]/[name_u]Teddy[/name_u].
