We all have those names we love but for some reason cannot use. Whether it be a conontation, a rude meaning, or just a bad memory they have been lost forever. I thought it would be interesting to see other peoples. [name]Feel[/name] free to post GPs as well.
Boys
[name]Dick[/name]- My grandpa is a [name]Richard[/name] nn [name]Rich[/name], and I would love to honor him. Also I love the short handsome sound of it. But well…
Peaceable- TEASING! But I do really like it. I won’t subject any future sons to it though.
[name]Merry[/name]- I love this as a little boys nn. Not sure what I would use a full, but it is really not feasible. Oh well.
[name]Sherlock[/name]- [name]Love[/name] the sound, but it really would be just cruel.
[name]Addison[/name]- It has gone to the girls
Girls
[name]Fable[/name]- I love the sound but it really fits with NONE of my other names
[name]Whimsy[/name]- ^
[name]Poppy[/name]- Very bad association, though I think it is starting to go away. Maybe as a nn for [name]Penelope[/name].
[name]Sherwood[/name]: It worked on [name]Sherwood[/name] [name]Anderson[/name] and that’s probably the only person.
[name]Edmund[/name]: It’s just too old and too cumbersome with too many consonants. I’ll use the softer [name]Eamon[/name] instead.
[name]Jack[/name]: This is my favorite favorite name of ever, but I have an uncle named [name]Jack[/name] and I haven’t decided whether its too weird to name my kid that when it isn’t really “after” him. Especially since I said I would prefer them not to name their daughter MY name (I mean really, 50% of the grandkids would have been named [name]Kate[/name]!! Old [name]Kate[/name] and [name]Baby[/name] [name]Kate[/name]. I think not).
[name]Iris[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name], but it’s my best friend’s name.
[name]Wren[/name] - a complete guilty pleasure - I love the sound, but I just don’t ever see myself using it. Maybe I could get away with using it as a nickname for [name]Eleanor[/name]?
[name]Lydia[/name] - as much as I love the name, the [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name] reference (I am a HUGE [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name] fan and frequently re-read my favorites, Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice) gets me almost every time.
[name]Cora[/name] - too similar to [name]Eleanor[/name], I think, although I do love it to pieces.
[name]James[/name] - used to be my all time favorite boy name as a child (before [name]Henry[/name] won out), but for some reason, I think its popularity wore me out. (even though my usual stance is “popularity be darned”)
[name]Seth[/name] - I have the HARDEST time thinking of middle names for [name]Seth[/name] - right now I kind of like [name]Seth[/name] [name]Thomas[/name], but I’m not really sure what I think about the sound.
[name]Edmund[/name] - I both love and dislike [name]Edmund[/name] - some days I think he’s one of the greatest names (especially with such an adorable nickname as [name]Teddy[/name]), but others I just find him a bit clunky.
I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]James[/name], but it’s too popular for me to use. Also, can’t use the family name [name]Adolf[/name] for obvious reasons, even though I do like it.
[name]Cameron[/name] and [name]William[/name] are bad associations.
Some beautiful Slavic names which have pronunciations that would be slaughtered here: [name]Katarzyna[/name], [name]Ekaterina[/name], [name]Nadezhda[/name], [name]Mikhail[/name]. Among many other “foreign” names. Especially Celtic names, with their spellings.
GPs for boys: [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Cyprian[/name], [name]Ignatius[/name], Rosaire, [name]Merlin[/name], [name]Santiago[/name], [name]Yves[/name].
GPs for girls: [name]Vesper[/name], Coriander, [name]Esmerelda[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], [name]Severine[/name], [name]Rosetta[/name].
[SUB][/SUB][name]Daniel[/name] [name]Wayne[/name] - my mom’s boyfriend’s name is [name]Danny[/name] [name]Wayne[/name] And, obviously, it’s far too similar. I don’t want people to think I’m honoring him.
miraje, [name]Nadezhda[/name] is one of my all-time favourites too. I love the sound and the meaning (hope)… but I know it would never be pronounced correctly. [name]Katarzyna[/name] is pretty too.
I love [name]Elizabeth[/name], but DH vetoed it because it makes him think of [name]Queen[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] II.
[name]Andromeda[/name]: Too out there.
[name]Sarah[/name]: Too popular, had a friend in high school named [name]Sarah[/name].
[name]Wolf[/name]: Couldn’t use it as a first name, used it as a middle name instead. People either love it or hate it. Too many people hated it.
[name]Fox[/name]: Same problem as [name]Wolf[/name].
There are a lot of names I could never use because they are too popular: [name]Maya[/name], [name]Sophie[/name], [name]Ethan[/name], [name]Emily[/name], [name]Emma[/name].
[name]Jack[/name]: I love it, but I have 2 cousins and a friend named [name]Jack[/name], so I could never use it.
[name]Teddy[/name]: I don’t like any of the longer full names for it ([name]Theodore[/name], [name]Edmund[/name], [name]Edgar[/name], [name]Edward[/name], etc)
[name]Mia[/name]: Good family friend named this and I just can’t name a daughter after her.
I’m sure there are others I just can’t think of them right now.
I love all these names/combs, but can’t use them because SO vetoed them…or dislikes/loathes them.
Boys:
[name]Sebastian[/name] (I deeply love this name, it’s my all time favorite, but he deeply loathes it. Combo: [name]Sebastian[/name] [name]Lloyd[/name]),
[name]Kurtis[/name] (doesn’t like it. Combo: [name]Kurtis[/name] [name]Everett[/name]),
[name]Bram[/name] (again, doesn’t like it. Combo: [name]Bram[/name] [name]Joseph[/name]),
[name]Patrick[/name] (I’d only use it for a middle name only, but he says it reminds him of [name]Patrick[/name] from Spongebob. Combo, using it as a first: [name]Patrick[/name] [name]Lliam[/name].),
[name]Declan[/name] (he’s afraid he’ll eventually be teased with the nickname Deck/[name]Decker[/name], which will then turn into [name]Dick[/name]. Combo: [name]Declan[/name] [name]Charles[/name]),
[name]Reid[/name]/[name]Reed[/name]/[name]Read[/name] (his best friend’s name. Won’t work, even as a middle name. Combo: [name]Reid[/name]/[name]Reed[/name]/[name]Read[/name] [name]Thomas[/name]),
[name]Cyrus[/name] (Reminds him of [name]Miley[/name] [name]Cyrus[/name], which, for some bizarre reason, is his celebrity crush. Combo: [name]Cyrus[/name] [name]Cole[/name]),
[name]Luca[/name]/[name]Lucca[/name] (again, doesn’t like it. Combo: [name]Luca[/name]/[name]Lucca[/name] [name]Omri[/name]. [name]Love[/name] [name]Omri[/name], too, haven’t asked him yet.).
Girls:
[name]Vivia[/name] (likes it, but he’d never let me use it. [name]Even[/name] for our dog. Combo: [name]Vivia[/name] [name]Opal[/name]),
[name]Spencer[/name] (doesn’t work with his/our surname. Combo: [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Skye[/name]),
[name]Sawyer[/name] (he likes for a boy only; again doesnt work with the surname),
[name]Reide[/name] (his male best friend’s name. Plus, the middle name–goes by it, though–of a girl that we both don’t like. Combo: [name]Reide[/name] [name]Gwynneth[/name]),
[name]Levia[/name] “[name]Levi[/name]” (probably would accept it, bit doesn’t like it. Combo: [name]Levia[/name] “[name]Levi[/name]” [name]Graice[/name]),
[name]Elliott[/name] (he’s had a bad experience with an [name]Ellie[/name], which would, most likely, be her nickname. Combo: [name]Elliott[/name] [name]Faye[/name]),
[name]Chandler[/name] (love this for a girl, he doesn’t. Says it reminds him of the TV show Friends and only likes it on a boy.),
[name]Carter[/name] (his male cousin’s nam. Combo: [name]Carter[/name] [name]Starr[/name]).
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Gentry[/name] for a girl but it was the last name of a girl in my town who did not have a good reputation. Which is too bad because I would totally use it otherwise!
[name]Arthur[/name]: OH’s surname sounds a bit like a body part. And [name]Arthur[/name] sounds like ‘half a’ in my accent, so to call him by fn/ln would be like saying ‘half a head’ or ‘half a leg’.
[name]Naomi[/name]: I can’t get over the fact it spells ‘I moan’ backwards enough to use it.
I couldn’t use my top girl name for my daughter - [name]Elle[/name] - because I stupidly opened my mouth. God, don’t even get me started on that. I will probably never totally get over it.
I also couldn’t use the girl name that would have been my son’s name back in 1999 - had he been a girl. The name was [name]Ava[/name]. At the time, it was pretty unheard of. Then [name]Reese[/name] Witherspoon named her daughter [name]Ava[/name] and soon after, it seemed like every other girl was named [name]Ava[/name]. Family members have even used it since then, so even if I didn’t mind the popularity, it still became unusable.
Another name I really love that I could not use is [name]Estelle[/name]. Since [name]Elle[/name] was unusable, I wanted to name my daughter [name]Estelle[/name], but DH would not let me no matter how much I begged.
I like the name [name]Amber[/name], I would probably use it in the middle spot if it weren’t for the fact that I have a cousin named [name]Amber[/name].
I also like the name [name]Sage[/name], but it rhymes with my last name.
[name]Joshua[/name]- I like this name in it’s full form (no [name]Josh[/name], just [name]Joshua[/name]). I never used to like it because i was bullied by a [name]Joshua[/name], then i grew to like it…unfortunately, my uncle and aunt used it for their son a few years ago.
[name]Isaac[/name]- my friend claimed it already…
[name]Viva[/name]- i really like the sound of this…especially with the mn [name]Lux[/name]…it has a positive meaning just sounds pretty good as well, but it sounds more nickname-ish…we’ll see.
[name]Micah[/name]- i love this, but my uncle used it.
[name]Louis[/name]- very bad association for me…it would cause too much pain.
[name]Mia[/name]/[name]Maya[/name], [name]Olivia[/name], [name]Owen[/name]- used by close family friends…it would just be too confusing
[name]Alberta[/name]- it’s the name of my step-father’s late mother…thing is, she loved us but i was too young to really be close with her, so it would be strange naming my child after her…somewhat.
[name]Lucy[/name]- my family recently named their puppy this…so its out!
[name]Sadie[/name], [name]Tess[/name]- both used for pets, and even though it was years ago, everyone still clearly associates these names with those animals
Most of my loves that I can’t use stem from the way they sound with my surname.
[name_u]Ever[/name_u] - This MIGHT be my absolute favorite name for a girl, but with my surname ([name_u]Gray[/name_u]), it sounds very…idk, gothic. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]. I couldn’t do that!
[name_u]Wren[/name_u] - Again, this is one of my absolute favorite names, and one we were very seriously considering for our daughter, until I said it out loud with my surname.
[name_f]Magdalen[/name_f] - This is the only one that has nothing to do with my surname. It’s very, very biblical…and we are not religious. We are both atheists, so it would be looked at very strangely. Oddly, I love SO many biblical boy names that I wouldn’t hesitate to use. [name_u]Micah[/name_u], [name_u]Noah[/name_u], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_m]Abram[/name_m]. These are more established as American names, not just names from The Bible. Also, [name_f]Noa[/name_f] is on our short list for girls. [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] is a love that I might hesitate on. Hmm. Interesting thoughts this is bringing me! I’ve found a suitable replacement that I love just as much - [name_u]Madigan[/name_u].
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - My [name_m]BIL[/name_m] & [name_m]SIL[/name_m] used it
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] - My sister’s boyfriends name
[name_m]Draco[/name_m] - Definitely a GP
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m] - Sound horrid with our surname
