Names you love but everyone else hates?

My naming style is very diverse as you can see. I like all types. These are just some of my name crushes that no one really seems to like. I understand fully why you do not like them. I don’t care about popularity. If I love it, so what? Use it. Lastly, if you have these same reactions it’s all good. Some of mine include:
[name]Avril[/name] (French word for [name]April[/name]. The [name]Avril[/name] Lavigne association does not bother me at all (would you hate me if I considered it a plus?) but not many people like it. [name]Trust[/name] me, I understand if you don’t.)
[name]Skye[/name] (I do not get good reactions out of this… I have no idea why.)
[name]Cher[/name] (I am trying to get over the obvious celebrity association but in 20 years time will it matter? I’m not saying I love it, it’s just idk.)
[name]Emma[/name] ([name]Every[/name] time I bring this up people always tell me it’s “[name]Way[/name] too popular.”)
[name]Pandora[/name] (The bad myth association and the brand name are the main reasons people complain. I understand.)
[name]Adeline[/name] (I always get “I prefer [name]Madeline[/name].”)

[name]Draco[/name] (Too trendy is what i usually get.)
Candor (Ok, I understand that it’s a word name…)
[name]Jameson[/name] (They prefer [name]James[/name])
[name]Emmett[/name] (too trendy)
[name]Jasper[/name] (also too trendy)
My boy list is considerably smaller, as I tend to like more classic names.

These are probably all “phases” so judge away.
I have no idea why I am making such a big deal out of this but okay.

Any names you love but everyone else hates? le sigh

First of all, from your names, I really like Skye (I probably wouldn’t use it as a first cuz I like lengthy first names typically but I could SOOO use it for a middle!), Adeline (while I do like Madeline, I don’t think it’s better than Adeline haha. They’re about equal IMO), and Jameson

My list:
Susannah: Idk if the berries here like this name or not, but most of my family wrinkles their nose, especially when I pair it with my middle name of choice, Lark (c’mon guys, Susannah Lark is awesome!)
Sophia: they say it’s too popular; i say "who cares?! it’s beautiful!!!
Rinna/Rin: all i get when i say this name is “HUH???” I do love the name Katharine, so I’ve resigned myself to Katharine nn Rin.
Eowyn: automatic response: “You’re such an LOTR nerd!!”
Eilonwy: is that even a name? (they say). why, yes it is and a very good one too (i say)
Larkin: cue the nose wrinkles of confusion
Primrose: the Hunger Game reference is just too much for most
Scout: It’s Jean Louise Finch’s nickname! What could be better?!?!

My taste in boys names runs pretty “normal/traditional” too, so like you, i don’t have as many
Percy: my mom says I’ve been reading too much Rick Riordan
Aragorn: yeah, it’s the LOTR thing again
Llewellyn: Say what???
Caol: yeah, it’s pronounced like the vegetable (i think). But it’s Irish!!

mazarine, [name]Indira[/name], evangeline, cohen, nobel, sterling…and sloan for a boy

Ladies:
[name]Drusilla[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name]
[name]Sibyl[/name]
[name]Octavia[/name]
[name]Araminta[/name]
[name]Ida[/name]

Gentlemen:
[name]Percy[/name]
[name]Ignatius[/name]
[name]Dexter[/name]
[name]Otis[/name]
[name]Hector[/name]

I love [name]Cher[/name]…for the association, actually!

Anyways-
For me, it’s “dated” names that people call “mom names”, but are absolutely grandma names at this point…
[name]Jean[/name]
[name]Karen[/name]
[name]Barbara[/name]
[name]Susan[/name]
[name]Carol[/name]
[name]Joan[/name]
[name]Theresa[/name]
[name]Dolores[/name]
[name]Patricia[/name]

I think in awhile they will be the vintage-classics everyone is loving, but they just need a bit longer

Also- overly cutesy cuteness like…

[name]Honey[/name]
[name]Bonnie[/name]
[name]Bunny[/name]
[name]Lolly[/name]
[name]Dolly[/name]

I adore [name]Skye[/name], [name]Jasper[/name], and [name]Scout[/name]! ( among others)

For me it’s [name]Holiday[/name]. I adore the name for a girl but my friends think its weird. I haven’t told my family. Someday if I ever decide to name a daughter this, I’ll prob keep the name on the down low.

@sarahdoodle I’m a pjato fan also!

Hmm…people look at me like I have three heads when I mention I like [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]IRL[/name]. Oh,and lately when I bring up the name [name]Primrose[/name] they just dismiss it as a Hunger Games name…but the flowers are SO PRETTY!

[name]Ava[/name]- Too popular
[name]Evelyn[/name]- Too old lady-ish according to my mom. lol
[name]Sabrina[/name]- [name]Sabrina[/name] the Teenage Witch Association (I never watched that show, so assoc. doesn’t bother me)
[name]July[/name]- Name of a month
[name]Anastasia[/name]- Too dramatic
Anna- See Evelyn

Caldeon- No one can pronounce it right, too old man-ish
[name]Noah[/name]- Too popular (This was my #1 boy’s name for YEARS.)
[name]Sullivan[/name],[name]Bennett[/name], [name]Ellis[/name], etc…- No one in my family likes surnames as first names

I adore [name]Pandora[/name] and [name]Antigone[/name], too–I can’t understand why people don’t like them, I think curiosity and the courage to stand up to authority are awesome.

And larkub, I know two Holidays! [name]One[/name] spells her name with two L’s, which I guess makes it a little more name-like.

For me, it’s [name]Ismay[/name] and [name]Marceline[/name]. No one seems to share my enthusiasm for those at all. Same with [name]Ferdinand[/name] and [name]Quentin[/name] for boys.

For me it’s [name]Hester[/name], [name]Damaris[/name], [name]Bertram[/name] and Digory. I think they’re lovely names, but most others… don’t.

First off, I love your names, especially [name]Avril[/name].[name]Adeline[/name] is really pretty and if you want to get past the madeline thing, what about [name]Adele[/name] or [name]Adelaide[/name]? My names are [name]Penelope[/name] (probably because of the girl with the pig nose association) and [name]Bellatrix[/name], probably because of the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] association but I think it’s so much cooler than [name]Beatrix[/name] plus the nickname [name]Bella[/name] is awesome. Also [name]Lyra[/name], most people prefer [name]Lila[/name]/[name]Layla[/name]/[name]Lola[/name].

Pretty much all of my favorites. The main ones:
[name]Tallulah[/name]: people have an irrational hatred of this name. They can’t explain why but the just really dislike it
[name]Fox[/name] (girl): all I ever hear is ‘she’ll get foxy jokes’. And? Having a name associated with being attractive a bad thing? Plus, this isn’t the 1970s. [name]Fox[/name]/foxy is not a part of the day-to-day vocabulary

I recently met a woman (40ish) named [name]Avril[/name]. I never disliked the name but my impression has improved since meeting a professional adult with it

I also like [name]Avril[/name]. As for names that I like but most people hate–oh there are so many!

[name]Eira[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] listen to it pronounced in Welsh)
[name]Arwen[/name] and Eirwen
Maiwenn
[name]Reeve[/name]
[name]Sabre[/name]
[name]Thane[/name]
Thrace
Tirion
[name]Cyan[/name] (actually DH loves that one)
[name]Indigo[/name] for a BOY
[name]Draven[/name]

Generally I find names along these lines that I like, then poll them and they rarely get a positive response…also DH vetoes a lot and keeps me from going very unique or using alternative spellings that I think are cool. Our most likely girl possibility now is [name]Mira[/name], although left to my own devices it would be [name]Meara[/name]

My mother literally wrinkled her nose at [name]Hugo[/name], and I also get the same reactions to [name]Milo[/name] (so sweet!). For the girls, it’s [name]Matilda[/name] (so lovely!) and even [name]Lilia[/name]. My family is so unimaginative.

Matilda-It’s too clunky/old lady.
Olive- It’s a food/ugly color/Olive Oyl/not as pretty as Olivia.
Lux-I’d only ever use this a middle name, but the general reaction is soap brand/trashy.
Arwen/Leia-Again, I’d only ever use the names as middles, but people say that they’re too nerdy.
Imogen-a British name that hasn’t crossed over to the US. Most people I meet haven’t heard of the name so they have a negative reaction.

The only names on here that I’ve almost ALWAYS gotten negative responses to are:
[name]Alaska[/name] - So a pageant girl is named this, so? I’m sure there’s pageant girls names [name]Emily[/name], [name]Sophia[/name] and [name]Isabella[/name] too
[name]Brooke[/name] - It’s dated, apparently
[name]Fallon[/name] - Masculine, ugly and white-rrash have been some of my favorites
[name]Heather[/name] - Also dated
[name]Julie[/name] - “Why on [name]Earth[/name] would you give your child a nickname when the beautiful [name]Julia[/name] exists”? Erm, cause I like it?
[name]Mckinley[/name]
[name]Meadow[/name]
[name]October[/name]
[name]Sailor[/name]/[name]Saylor[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t even get me started…
[name]Sunday[/name]
[name]Wendy[/name]
[name]Curran[/name]
[name]Mark[/name] - I had someone ask me why I was even on this site if I was considering using such a boring and unimaginative name. Erm, ok.

I actually really like a lot of the names on this list. [name]Pandora[/name], [name]Skye[/name], and [name]Eira[/name] especially.

I can only think of a few-
[name]Donovan[/name]- SO can’t get past the football player association
[name]Samuel[/name]- He says it sounds like “a mule”.

I had a great childhood friend called ‘[name]Sky[/name]’ - nothing but positive feelings for the name but if you’re going to go hippy my policy is ‘go hard or go home’, omit the ‘e’

[name]Ariadne[/name] - ugly/impossible to pronounce, no one can spell it, WTH?
[name]Hermione[/name] - for obvious [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] associations (I love [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] but it’s a pity such a lovely name was sacrificed at the altar of popular culture, that said, before [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] no one would have been able to pronounce or spell it…)
[name]Thomasina[/name] - “You just put ‘ina’ on the end of a boy’s name, give her a proper girl name” - few feminine versions of masculine names have escaped the purge of the last century, though there’s still [name]Georgina[/name] and [name]Roberta[/name] which I feel will come back in force, and let’s not forget [name]Nigella[/name]…
[name]Lorelei[/name] - [name]Gilmore[/name] Girls or some such, never watched it… Also, a more generalised fear of Germans? (at least from my partner)

Ender - “Like Ender’s Game?” - Yes, so what?
Turing - “Like that gay guy who did the stuff with computers?” - Like…that genius who helped save his country and was still shat on from a great height subsequently just because he was gay…why yes (I like tribute names)
Wilde - “Like that gay guy…didn’t he write plays?” - Like that awesome…etc, you get the point (I like tribute names)
[name]Lysander[/name] - “Isn’t that from [name]Shakespeare[/name] or some crap?” - Yes, yes it is… sigh

There are so many names that my family thinks I am crazy for liking. Some of them may not be super common, but some of them are perfectly “normal” names.

Girls:
[name]Olive[/name]
[name]Lucia[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]

Boys:
[name]Atticus[/name]
[name]Cedric[/name]
[name]Thaddeus[/name]
[name]Phineas[/name]
[name]Leif[/name]
[name]Silas[/name]
[name]Milo[/name]
[name]Amos[/name]
[name]Titus[/name]

I feel most of my favorites are mostly well-liked, [name]Cordelia[/name], [name]Matilda[/name], Beatrix, [name]Penelope[/name], [name]Zinnia[/name], even [name]Ramona[/name], to an extent.

However, even name-nerds dont seem to like [name]Allegra[/name], [name]Justine[/name], [name]Justina[/name] and [name]Maxine[/name]. For boys, maybe Roland fits here.
