What are your names that you love but can’t stand the nickname/full name/connotations/etc… associated with it??
Plus would you use it? [name_m]How[/name_m] do/would you use it??
Mine:
[name_m]Harris[/name_m]- Not a fan of nickname [name_m]Harry[/name_m]
[name_m]Bear[/name_m]/[name_m]Baer[/name_m]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] the sound but can’t bring myself to name my child after a [name_m]Bear[/name_m]. (Thinking [name_u]Barrett[/name_u] or Bayer could be a better use)
Mase- “[name_m]Mace[/name_m]”
[name_f]India[/name_f]/[name_f]Indie[/name_f]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] it but doesn’t sound like a name
[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]/[name_u]Wyn[/name_u]- [name_u]Love[/name_u] the name but dislike all full names to get to it and I don’t personally think it could stand on its own
My husband is [name_m]Joseph[/name_m]. He hates the nicknames [name_m]Joe[/name_m] and [name_u]Joey[/name_u], both of which he gets called by his family even after asking them to stop (since he was about 7). He’s not a huge fan of nicknames in general, but if you want to be called a nickname, he’s fine with that.
My daughter’s name is [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] (seer-sha). This 2 syllable name somehow gets shortened to something that sounds roughly like Sears by some teachers at her daycare. I’m completely confused by this.
I generally love Irish/Welsh names, but I can’t stand [name_f]Bronwyn[/name_f]. I’m not sure what it is about it.
Also [name_u]Fran[/name_u]. Can’t stand it. I like [name_f]Francesca[/name_f], but not [name_u]Fran[/name_u].
The first name I thought of is [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] it, it’s so sweet and whimsical, however… Of course I hate the connotation or possibility of a nickname like Looney, or how she might be teased
[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]. I love the name but I can’t stand the idea that he would be called “[name_u]Pat[/name_u].” [name_m]Just[/name_m] no. I think I would still use it but would call him maybe Patch for short? Not sure if that would stick though, and not sure if that’s much better.
As of recently I really like [name_f]Gabrielle[/name_f], but would probably only ever use it as a middle name because I can’t stand “[name_u]Gabby[/name_u].” I could try to make [name_f]Bri[/name_f] or [name_f]Brielle[/name_f] or even [name_f]Elle[/name_f] work but I kinda doubt they’d catch on.
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is my favorite name, and I’ve decided Fi isn’t so bad, but it would drive me nuts if someone called her [name_f]Fifi[/name_f]. It sounds like a stage name or a pet bunny rabbit!
My husband’s name is [name_u]Jude[/name_u] and while growing up boys would call him [name_f]Judith[/name_f] during athletics when he would mess up, so he refused to let us name our son after him.
I love the name [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], but hate “feebs”
[name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] is one of my favorites!! The name pair I have picked out for a little girl is [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] “Sha” [name_u]Aoibheann[/name_u]
I love the nickname [name_f]Lu[/name_f]/[name_u]Lou[/name_u] for a girl, but there’s literally no full name out there that I love enough to use. Such a shame.
(For what it’s worth, I think [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] can totally stand on its own!)
[name_u]James[/name_u] nn [name_u]Jay[/name_u] - A family name, but this horrible guy at school has completely ruined this as a first name option for me. I can still use [name_u]James[/name_u] in the middle spot, because I don’t really associate the name [name_u]James[/name_u] with him, but I can’t stand the name [name_u]Jay[/name_u] anymore.
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m] - This is the name my brother picked for himself when he started transitioning, and I think it would cause too much confusion to name my possible future son [name_m]Hugo[/name_m]. I love the name, don’t get me wrong! He told me that I was the one who introduced him to it and he decided to pick it to keep his old initials.
[name_m]Vincent[/name_m] - I don’t like [name_m]Vince[/name_m] and I’m afraid that people would call him that.
[name_f]Caoimhe[/name_f] - PRONUNCIATION. I love traditional Irish names and hate the anglicized spellings (which is funny, considering my last name).
[name_f]Wednesday[/name_f] - I’m mostly afraid of teasing. I’d use the nn [name_f]Wendy[/name_f], but still.
I can’t think of any others! I know some would come to mind if I were to ruminate on it, though.
What about [name_u]Connelly[/name_u]? You have [name_u]Connie[/name_u] + [name_u]Nelly[/name_u].
For me -
[name_m]Daley[/name_m] - I think this name is cute but with anything it sounds like username. Spelling it Daylee might solve the issue but I’m not sure how I feel on that.
[name_u]Rowan[/name_u] - So lovely but it already feels too popular.
[name_m]Palmer[/name_m] - Gorgeous and family ties. [name_m]Just[/name_m] the wrong family… I could probably look past it though.
I hear ya on the [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] front. I really like the name as is, not short for anything. However, I also grew up loving [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] the Pooh, so my family would not hold back the teasing for it.
The only other name I can think of at this present time is [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]. It’s so beautiful! However, I worry people would call her [name_f]Gigi[/name_f]. I HATE nicknames like [name_f]Gigi[/name_f], BB, CeeCee, and [name_f]Fifi[/name_f].
[name_f]Amada[/name_f] is a family name that has been on top of my list forever- I love it! My best friend growing up was [name_f]Amanda[/name_f] and she unfortunately ended up hurting me big time so all I can think of is her when I hear [name_f]Amada[/name_f]
[name_f]Sophie[/name_f]- I love the name but am not a huge fan of [name_f]Sophia[/name_f]/[name_f]Sofia[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]- I like the name but I don’t like the nicknames [name_f]Elle[/name_f] or [name_f]Ellie[/name_f]
I also love [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] but don’t know if it could stand on its own
[name_m]Herman[/name_m]- It’s a guilty pleasure name that I really like but worry that it sounds old fashioned
[name_f]Lorelai[/name_f]- I really like this name but I am also a fan of the show [name_m]Gilmore[/name_m] Girls and my family would probably think I used the name because of the character
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]/[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] but really, really dislike the nickname [name_f]Sue[/name_f]. Pretty much fallen in love with [name_f]Sanne[/name_f]/[name_f]Sanna[/name_f] though so it isn’t a big problem.
Oh and I also love the name [name_f]Bella[/name_f]. It’s just so sweet and gentle and lilting. However, there’s the whole Twilight connotation (which I don’t mind too much. But I’ve also started bumping into HEAPS of tiny little [name_f]Bella[/name_f]'s lately so the popularity is putting me off. Also my future last name has a lot of E’s and LL’s as well so it ends up being a bit of a tongue twister haha which I think has been the final nail in the coffin for this favourite name of mine
