Names you love... but won't use?

I’m sure there have been threads like this before, but a quick search didn’t turn up anything and so I thought I’d start one.

Are there any names that you love, but for one reason or another, can’t/won’t use? Maybe a close friend or family member already used it, or you feel it’s gotten too popular. Maybe you think it’s too matchy-matchy with your current children.

Whatever the reason, what are the names you just love but can’t use?

Mine are :

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - my best friend and his wife welcomed a baby girl named [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] in 2019
[name_f]Holly[/name_f] - My cousin just welcomed a baby girl named [name_f]Holly[/name_f] in [name_u]November[/name_u]
[name_u]Quinn[/name_u] - THREE friends have declared this will be the name of their first/next child
[name_u]Sam[/name_u] - my cousin has a little boy named [name_u]Sam[/name_u]
[name_u]Salem[/name_u] (g) - my husband vetoed this one!

I’m sure I could go on all day, really. Anybody else?

I’ve got a few:

Girls

[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]-I’ve loved this name since circa 2001. Although since about 2015 every other baby I meet is called [name_f]Adelyn[/name_f]. And I have come to dislike [name_f]Addie[/name_f] because of it too…or at least not be super happy w/having a child called [name_f]Addie[/name_f]. I don’t dislike it that much.

[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]-Our super close friends have a dog named this (whom I love!.) I think I’d probably still use it, but would possibly hesitate.

[name_f]Estella[/name_f]-Dh has a cousin w/a kid named this. Actually [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] nn [name_f]Stella[/name_f]. We never see the mom & don’t much care for her. And honestly second cousin names have already been repeated, because his family is so huge. Soooo, maybe I’d still use it.

[name_f]Felicity[/name_f]-Dh just hates it. Some of my names he either likes or is lukewarm too, but he really dislikes this one for some reason.

[name_f]Greta[/name_f]-I don’t have a huge problem w/the teenage activist lady, but I feel like this name is too associated w/her now.

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]-I think it’s so pretty, but as hard as I try I can’t get into [name_u]Josie[/name_u]. And I feel it may be somewhat unavoidable.

[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]-My mom named her cat this. Which is fine, because we have one in the family! We discovered the love for this name together while watching the gymnastics in the '96 Olympics.

[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]-I don’t know about this one. My main hesitation is that there aren’t any nns. Oh, & dh doesn’t like it. : /

[name_f]Sadie[/name_f]-We have friends w/a little one named this. We rarely see or talk to them anymore, so I think it’d be okay.

Boys-

[name_m]Barnaby[/name_m]-It’s so so cute, but I don’t think I’m brave enough. It’s just a little out there.

[name_u]Charlie[/name_u]-There are three of these in dh’s family already, plus it’s the name of his childhood dog. Two of the human [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]'s aren’t that awesome of people either.

[name_m]Colm[/name_m]-It’s my absolute favorite, but the pronunciation is just too difficult. Maybe if I lived in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f].

[name_m]David[/name_m]-It’s my late father’s name, so I’d like to use it for that reason. But also the name of Dh’s brother & nephew. And they have the same last name as us, & we see them all of the time. Plus, I don’t much care for [name_m]Dave[/name_m].

[name_u]Elliott[/name_u]-Dh’s best friend is named this, & I think it’d be okay/maybe kind of cool to use it. But I don’t like how it doesn’t have any nns & I’d be tempted to call a little [name_u]Elliott[/name_u] ‘[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]’. It’s too girly.

[name_m]Nolan[/name_m]-Dh kind of hates it. Although not as much as [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] & [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], so who knows.

[name_m]Patrick[/name_m]-Already two in the family…one a nephew who we see a bunch & one an uncle who’s not very nice. Plus, I don’t like [name_u]Pat[/name_u]. I love Patch though.

Funnily enough, one of the names I can’t use is one from the previous poster’s list as well!
I’m talking about [name_f]Estella[/name_f]. I’ve loved this name ever since I read Great Expectations but I can’t stand the nickname [name_f]Stella[/name_f] so I don’t think I’d use it.
Other than that, I adore the name [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] but I can’t use it because it’s so popular. I also think [name_f]Effie[/name_f] is really cute, but it’s my grandmother’s name and she’s not a pleasant person.
For boys, I can’t use [name_m]Clay[/name_m] because it’s a word with a negative meaning in the country I’m from, [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] and [name_m]Angus[/name_m] are too popular and [name_m]Klaus[/name_m] too [name_f]Santa[/name_f] [name_m]Claus[/name_m]. Finally, [name_m]Philip[/name_m] is the name of a close family friend so it’d be weird to use it.

This could be a long list… I’ll just mention a few.

There are some Icelandic names I adore but won’t use: ”srún, Húld, Sólrún for girls, Breki, Geir and Gretar for boys.

Names my SO vetoed: [name_m]Ptolemy[/name_m], [name_m]Pippin[/name_m], [name_f]Alyosha[/name_f] and [name_m]Emil[/name_m] for boys, [name_f]Mimosa[/name_f], [name_f]Kitty[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] for girls.

[name_f]Holly[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] are two of my absolute most favorite but I have a sister named [name_f]Holly[/name_f] and an aunt named [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_u]Seven[/name_u]- it’s a number
[name_f]Wyoming[/name_f]- ohhhh this one, it’s actually in my signature, I could see it working on a boy or a girl and there have actually been several people with this name. And I love the state. Might be a bit too much though considering I have walls full of [name_f]Wyoming[/name_f] themed stuff, people already (correctly) think I have an obsession as is.
[name_m]Angus[/name_m]- remove the g and you’ll know
Kerguelen- another place name. These are islands in the southern [name_f]Indian[/name_f] [name_u]Ocean[/name_u] also known as the “Desolation Islands” because they’re, save for some scientists and the occasional ham radio crew, unpopulated and far from anywhere that is. [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t heard of many Kerguelens though. Except as a last name.

Oh yes, the names from other cultures! I’m thinking of [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] and [name_m]Vladimir[/name_m] in particular. [name_u]Love[/name_u] 'em, but…couldn’t pull that off lol.
