[name_u]Ever[/name_u] have a name that you just adore on paper but when you hear it said allowed are substantially less charmed?
I remember when I was younger I adored the name [name_f]Rowena[/name_f], but had never heard anyone say it. I had always assumed is was similar to [name_f]Helena[/name_f], and in my head would say it ro-AY-nah or [name_f]RO[/name_f]-ehn-ah. After I discovered it was ro-WEEN-ah my love for the name died.
Anyone else have a name they love the look of but not the sound of?
Some others for me:
[name_f]Eudoxia[/name_f]
[name_m]Valerian[/name_m]
[name_m]Archibald[/name_m]
[name_f]Muriel[/name_f]
[name_u]Dagny[/name_u]
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
None of these are bad names, I just don’t live the sound so I wouldn’t personally use them.
[name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] and [name_f]Aoife[/name_f] stand out to me, I absolutely [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the way they look but can’t love their pronunciations!
More than I can think of right now. There are, for example, names like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] or [name_m]Emrys[/name_m] that I think look so beautiful, but when I pronounce them, their sound is just kind of underwhelming to my ear.
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m] looks great too but I don’t like the sound of it.
I agree with you about [name_f]Rowena[/name_f]! I get it suggested so often because I love [name_u]Rowan[/name_u] on a girl, but I just don’t like it.
I love the look of [name_f]Juno[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] (and it would have so much meaning) but the combo is a no-go for obvious reasons when said aloud.
I feel the same way about [name_f]Rowena[/name_f]. I do think the sound matches the look, it feels and looks kind of witchy and magical (though that might just be HP and Supernatural haha), but I personally love [name_f]Ro[/name_f]-ENN-uh a lot more (and have Rowenna on my list instead). I agree with [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]/[name_f]Eulalia[/name_f] too. To me they sound and feel sort of sloppy/messy to say.
[name_f]Anouk[/name_f]
[name_f]Araminta[/name_f]
[name_f]Ines[/name_f]
[name_f]Kerenza[/name_f]
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] ([name_m]Ive[/name_m] tried so hard to like the sound, but I just can’t get over my dislike of -shuh endings. It’s so annoying, because it’s an otherwise perfect name for me)
[name_f]Ana[/name_f]ïs
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] (with the original [name_f]El[/name_f]-OH-wen pronunciation)
[name_f]Orlaith[/name_f] (I do like Or-luh, but I love the idea of Or-layth even more)
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]/[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_m]Emilian[/name_m] is the only one I can think of for boys atm. Oh and [name_m]Peregrine[/name_m] too. I feel I really should love it, but I just don’t like the sound (I always want to say Peh-ruh-gwin for some reason).
You’ve all listed quite a variety of different names! Though I see a few really stick out across the board.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way about [name_f]Rowena[/name_f]!
Myosotis I love your variant Rowenna, much better sound.
And I can understand why so many have [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f] on their list. I don’t dislike it personally but can definitely see why the sound is unappealing to so many people.
[name_m]Idris[/name_m] and [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m]
I love the look of these names - [name_m]Idris[/name_m] in particular - but then I heard it said Id-riss. I thought it was Eye-driss and now I’m just a little disappointed. It still looks so cool but I’m not so fond of the pronunciation. [name_m]Isaiah[/name_m] I thought was Ih-sye-uh but then I heard it pronounce Eye-say-uh and again, I’m a bit disappointed.
[name_f]Ninon[/name_f] - I think it looks so adorable, but when said out loud it sounds like an ambulance siren
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - I still love this name, but only a little bit less after I found out the first syllable is usually pronounced like [name_f]Roz[/name_f] instead of [name_f]Rose[/name_f].
[name_f]Roisin[/name_f] - I think it looks beautiful, but I don’t like the -sheen ending.
If it makes you feel any better about [name_f]Persephone[/name_f] it looks like you were pronouncing it the way everyone I’ve ever heard say it does (if I’m reading your phonics right). Some names have multiple accepted pronunciations, though some have only one strongly established pronunciation that there’s no getting around.
