For me, I loved the name [name_m]Roland[/name_m], but recently I started to watch Schittes [name_u]Creek[/name_u] and now I just cannot for the life of me vision my cute little [name_m]Rollie[/name_m] anymore
I have a cousin named Sylvie, and I thought her name was so unheard of and beautiful… until a) the Loki TV show came out, and b) I came on Nameberry! It’s still beautiful but apparently it’s not so unheard of!
Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter has completely ruined the name for me. The actress was so great in the role, almost too great since she played the character’s villainous actions so well that it’s become someone I cannot stand. She’s such an evil character that she makes you want to yell at the television screen in anger lol.
i wouldn’t say these are all “ruined” but they definitely got knocked down the list a bit because of the associations i have with them.
elena - after tvd i cannot stand the thought of using the name elena for any part of my daughters name and then have her turning out like tvd elena. she was selfish, bratty, undeserving, self-centered and really ungrateful for her friends.
silas - tvd again, i don’t think this is like a name i would never use but, i think my sister might be like “tvd silas?” if i were to announce my sons name as it.
there is many tvd names so i’ll just say them here. some are because of characters others are simply i just wouldn’t use them in a sibset together.
klaus/niklaus - love him and the name just not with another tvd sibling.
rebekah - love her, same as klaus.
elijah - love him, same as klaus.
finn - don’t really like him.
davina - i love this name i just feel it’s too tvd.
lochlan/lachlan - i watched jane the virgin and loved it. after coming on nb and seeing this name i started to like it a lot, i’m watching the show with my mom and grandma now and am just reminded of how much i dislike his character.
petra - same as lochlan, i’m just watching the show and am reminded of how rude she was at the beginning.
i’m sure there is more but i’m drawing some blanks !
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u]— was kind of ruined for me by The [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid, because I love it most for a boy and the Disney [name_f]Princess[/name_f] association is just too powerful.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f]— Riverdale / [name_m]Archie[/name_m] comics. I don’t dislike the character, but I know that if I were to use the name, I’d probably get a lot of “like in Riverdale” personally and I’m just not ready for that. Also the show made me realize the nickname [name_u]Ronnie[/name_u] is quite likely and I just don’t like that lol.
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]— The Picture of [name_u]Dorian[/name_u] [name_u]Gray[/name_u]. The name is strongly associated with that character for me now, and he’s just not a pleasant one.
[name_m]Heathcliff[/name_m] — Wuthering Heights. Talk about a character you don’t want to be associated with. This guy’s high up that list for me (even though I love that book). I might still use [name_m]Heath[/name_m] someday by himself.
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]— Dear [name_u]Evan[/name_u] [name_m]Hansen[/name_m]. I started to really like this name (could have loved it) and then I saw this musical, which I hate (please don’t come at me for this, I know it’s not a popular opinion). Primarily because of the titular character. I am a theater artist so the association is everywhere. Name ruined.
[name_f]Theodosia[/name_f]— [name_m]Hamilton[/name_m]. The name is just too strongly associated right now, since it’s an uncommon name in a very popular piece of media.
I feel like I’m not watching enough TV because the only thing that comes to mind is [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] but I wouldn’t say that is ruined only that the tv show gives me pause.
I used to love [name_m]Heath[/name_m] after hearing it on [name_m]Heath[/name_m] [name_m]Ledger[/name_m], now it’s just [name_m]Heathcliff[/name_m] from Wuthering Heights (whom I believe [name_m]Ledger[/name_m] was named after, and had a sister named Catherine?)
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] is another one. I love the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid character but the association is overwhelming. I’m not sure if it counts as I would still love to be named [name_f]Ursula[/name_f].
[name_u]Ariel[/name_u] isn’t a bad association but I prefer it with the Spanish pronunciation and most assume it’s pronounced like the mermaid.
I agree with [name_f]Dolores[/name_f] because of the [name_u]Harry[/name_u] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] character, but also because of the titular character in [name_f]Lolita[/name_f], it’s not an association I would like to have with my name.
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
I despise this name because of a book.
I agree with this. Ariel on a boy is stunning, but I don’t like it on a girl. But all everyone thinks about when they hear Ariel is the mermaid.
Another one for me is Loki. It’s a great name from Norse mythology, but it’s too closely associated with Tom Hiddleston now. Not that I don’t like him, but still.
What’s tvd?
[name_f]Julia[/name_f] - I started watching Poldark recently and it’s the name of the main character’s daughter who dies as an infant. I still love the name but that’s my first association, so it feels rather bleak.
I searched it means the vampire diaries it’s a TV show, I’ve never seen it though
[name_u]Willoughby[/name_u] because of Sense and Sensibility
Simon, somewhat. There’s a movie I (used to?) really like starring a character named Simon, but his actor kind of ruins it for me.
[name_f]Samara[/name_f]
[name_f]Cyrilla[/name_f]. I feel like The Witcher will undoubtedly boost its popularity, and I can’t take the risk of it turning into the next Arya/Aria.
Off the bat, I would say [name_u]Aria[/name_u] and [name_u]Ezra[/name_u]. I liked both before the PLL show came around and was bummed to see them skyrocket in popularity in response. I still like both names but, popularity aside, the nature of the characters’ relationship is not exactly positive… (The town I grew up in has an alarming number of such relationships happening in real life so it is just unpleasant all around)
the vampire diaries !
[name_m]Grover[/name_m]
I used to really like [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] and [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], but they both got ruined for me by the fictional serial killer connections ([name_u]Dexter[/name_u] and American Psycho respectively). I also used to like [name_f]Karen[/name_f] before it got the racist entitled soccer mom associations (am I the only person who watched Outnumbered? [name_f]Karen[/name_f] in that was amazing)! I’m sure there are more but those are the ones that spring to mind.
@Mary_Rose, [name_u]Dexter[/name_u] is one for me too! I never loved the name, but my tastes are currently such that I think I would except for that association.
Hadn’t thought about [name_m]Patrick[/name_m], but I think that one’s so common in my area that it’s “safe” for me (though I can’t use it for other reasons).
