Names you want to love?

Are there any names that it seems like you would love, have a lot of great qualities, and are your style but you just can’t quite get on board with?

For me, [name_m]Gilbert[/name_m], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_u]Asher[/name_u], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_f] Josephine[/name_f], and [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f] are names I want to love but can’t manage yet.

What names do you all want to love?

Understood. It’s a name I’ve taken years to warm to and even now am not always sure about (though I play with combinations and have it on my user card).

Eden, [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_m]Otis[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_f]Elise[/name_f]

Penelope and Nathaniel are some names for me. I love longer names and I really do like Nathaniel but I’ve met A TON of them where I live. Penelope I think is just to frilly for my taste and I just don’t think it’ll age well, but it is a nice name and I like the nickname Penn.

I was just thinking about this today. there are plenty that I may think of and comment later, but for me it’s [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. it’s short, girly and spunky, has so much history, not overly popular and has so much personality… it’s everything I want in a name, and sometimes I want to call my future daughter this, but something holds me back. I think it’s because in my head I spell it out phonetically as “fee-bee”… and while I love [name_f]Bee[/name_f], I do not like the look of fee bee. it’s silly, I know.

There are so many great names out there; it’s not silly to be a little picky!

[name_f]Florence[/name_f]! I feel like it’s a general NB favorite, but I just can’t seem to like it. I like [name_f]Flora[/name_f], but [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is beyond me apparently.

Elizabeth fits with my general very classic style, has lots of lovely nicknames, and has many pretty sounds, but I’m not huge on the ending -th sound and I have some associations that aren’t great. I really swing back and forth between thinking it’s such a beautiful name and being weirdly put off by it.

I feel this way about [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] & [name_f]Faith[/name_f], Edith, Beth and other light “th” names. I don’t like the “th” that is only through your tongue, not your throat. After teaching preK and K5 the last several years, I realized it’s the tongue/teeth “th” that bugs me, when saying a name. It’s the difference between [name_m]Mathis[/name_m] (ugh) vs. [name_m]Mathias[/name_m] (fine!). That’s pretty weird I know!

Also don’t like [name_f]Esther[/name_f] or any “th” that sounds just like “t”.

:woman_shrugging: In theory, I should love these names and I’ve tried!

There are plenty more but it’s a funny thought how we can all have preferences and dislikes based on—sometimes not much. :joy: just an idiosyncrasy maybe.

Charlotte, [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f], [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] (Corn is puttng me off a bit I just think of cornucopia), [name_u]Vivian[/name_u](soo popular on nb but I see this spelling for a boy and [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] for a girl), [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Fleur[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f]…any flor or fleur name, [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]… while I completely adore [name_m]Othello[/name_m] and [name_m]Otto[/name_m], I just can’t get behind [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] despite being derived from exactly the same word. It just looks clunky and jumbled to me. 🤷

[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f]… given my great love for [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Kalliope[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], etc this should be right alley, but I just can’t… I don’t even really know why.

There are a few.

The main one I can think of is…well, three. [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] & [name_f]Greta[/name_f]. Because I am in love w/the nn [name_f]Gerty[/name_f], but it’s just too nick-namey on its own. And I really do like [name_f]Greta[/name_f], but just don’t love it.

Edith, [name_f]Clara[/name_f], and [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] - I like them all but they’ve never been favorites or made it on to my list. I especially wish I liked [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] more - it’s harder to find vintage boy names to love!

@findemaxa13 @rebekah83 II’ve noticed I’m also not into most names that have “th” sound so I’ve never been a fan of [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], and [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f]. For whatever reason I’m actually ok with the sound of [name_f]Faith[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] but I’m still not overly exited for them and I don’t care for their meaning anyway. I also prefer [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] or [name_u]Lisa[/name_u] as alternatives to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f].

One exception to the ‘th’ sound is [name_f]Athena[/name_f]. I’ve always loved [name_f]Athena[/name_f] since elementary school. Maybe I just don’t like the “th” sound at the end of the name? But then I should like [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] if that’s the case. Wish I could understand myself better haha

I really want to love [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] and honor a great mathematician and astronomer but I’m just not really into how it sounds even though I like a lot of names that ends with an “a”

It’s weird, I don’t have a problem with th in the middle of words (although I don’t like [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] either lol), and I do actually like [name_f]Ruth[/name_f], but in general I don’t like it at the end.

Yes! I’ve been thinking a lot about this. I desperately want to love [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], but I just can’t. Classic, crazy nickname potential, and fairly rare. I think maybe the “-fred” part is just too clunky. I also want to love the names [name_f]Sonja[/name_f] and [name_u]August[/name_u]. [name_m]Alas[/name_m], maybe in middle spots.
