Does anyone ever look at a name and it seems so wonderful written out on paper, but the pronunciation is too off-putting for you to like it? Then you just wish you could pronounce it another way and it not seem made-up and weird? Post it here!
For me—
[name_m]Reuben[/name_m]. [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] looks so fantastic on paper, but I want to say ROY-ben instead of ROO-ben and the name [name_m]Reuben[/name_m] (ROY-ben) would be so cool!
-[name_u]Leigh[/name_u] names. I want to pronounce the ending -lay instead of -lee and the name [name_f]Hadleigh[/name_f] pronounced Hadlay is so much more beautiful-sounding, but also so made-up sounding.
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]. While I love [name_f]Cleo[/name_f] pronounced Clee-oh (for a boy), it would sound so amazing if you could say it CLEH-oh or CLAY-oh.
[name_f]Aurembiaix[/name_f]- Ridiculous, I know, but I wish I could pronounce the x. Aur-em-bee-ix. It would be such a fun, cool name for a little girl!
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]. While I also love laz-low, I always want to say las-zlow. It’s a terrible tongue-twister but for some reason I really like it.
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]. Recently I’ve started looking at this name and thinking how beautiful it would be if it were pronounced eh-LAY-ahn-or. (I think I just really like the ‘ay’ sound, actually.)
[name_u]Louise[/name_u]. Another really ridiculous one… but what if [name_u]Louise[/name_u] were pronounced lou-ee-eh? [name_m]Louis[/name_m] with an ‘eh’ at the end.
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f]. Wouldn’t it be wonderful it it were EYE-soh-bel?
[name_u]Reilly[/name_u]. I’d love it pronounced RAY-lee! (There’s that ‘ay’ sound again.)
[name_f]Do[/name_f] any of the other berries out there have names they wish were pronounced another way, or could be pronounced another way?
I used to pronounce [name_m]Hugo[/name_m] as WHO-go, but nowadays prefer the [name_m]Hugh[/name_m]-go pronunciation.
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] was [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-a-lind to me but same story as [name_m]Hugo[/name_m], I now prefer the roz- pronunciation.
[name_f]Leonora[/name_f] - I know some people pronounce this as le-nora but why?
[name_m]Leonard[/name_m] - I don’t get lennard? what do you have against Os?
I mean there doesn’t seem to be an official pronunciation so why not?
Hm, I mean it is las-low in its language of origin which sounds very much like las-zlow to me.
OMG yes I wish the name [name_m]David[/name_m] was pronounced like [name_m]Davide[/name_m] (Dah-veed)!!!
Also separately, I really like the name [name_f]Nathalie[/name_f] pronounced TH unlike the more popular [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and I really like [name_m]Nataniel[/name_m] pronounced T unlike the more popular [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m].
I wish [name_f]Sorcha[/name_f] rhymed with [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f]. I fell in love with this sound with the character from the film [name_u]Willow[/name_u] as a child. When I discovered a real Irish name with a spelling I though would be pronounced that way I was excited, but it’s not . Although [name_f]Saoirse[/name_f] is lovely it’s not quite the same.
I only just recently learned that I was pronouncing [name_u]Amos[/name_u] wrong, which I’d been pronouncing as ay-mose (like most without the t), which I prefer to the ay-moss or ay-muss pronunciation.
I prefer [name_m]David[/name_m] and [name_u]Davis[/name_u] with the first syllable pronounced “daw” instead of “day”. I know this is actually how the names are pronounced in some places, but it wouldn’t be the natural pronounciation here.
100% this. I love so many of the [name_m]Leon[/name_m]- names, but I just can’t get behind [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] because of this.
I wish Endymion was en-deh-MY-on instead of en-DIM-ee-ehn. I still say it the first way though out of instinct
We say our son’s name as en-dih-MEE-ohn and so do a lot of people around us, instinctively. I guess it’s different because we don’t live in an [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking country, but I’d say: pronounce it the way you want it. There’s no officially correct pronunciation anyway and the Greek pronunciation has the stress on the third syllable as well.
people pronounce [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] as [name_m]Lennard[/name_m]? i-
I thought people pronounced it with dat O
as in [name_m]Leo[/name_m] Nard (or ya know, Leonardo without dat O)
(or is this an accent thing and it’s supposed to be [name_m]Leo[/name_m] Nard)
This isn’t really the same thing but I wish that we could all agree on one pronunciation for [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] is it teen? Is it tyne? I don’t really mind which, let’s all just pick one!
All the names that end in e but it’s not said out loud bother me. Like in Finnish, if there is a letter in a word/name, the letter is said. So in my mind [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] should ee-sah-bel-leh, not ee-sah-bel. And [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] should be char-lot-teh, [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] ah-deh-lay-deh, [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] theo-do-reh and so on. It’s just annoying!
