It would have to be [name]Calypso[/name] for me as well- i just love it! I can’t really figure out why it seems so unusable though…it has a soft, lilting sound, lovely musical associations, history, andthe adorable nickname [name]Caly[/name], but it still feels way out there. It will stay on my list though.
A favourite from my teens is [name]Viva[/name] which i still love but could never use because it is a brand of paper towels over here in the Uk!
[name]Indiana[/name] for a girl…I love the nickname [name]Indy[/name], but [name]Indiana[/name] [name]Jones[/name] and the state make [name]Indiana[/name] a bit over-the-top/unusable for me at the moment.
[name]Katniss[/name]…For some reason, I find the idea of seeing a little [name]Katniss[/name] running around really adorable! In a more realistic view, I would probably use [name]Katherine[/name] or [name]Katerina[/name] or some [name]Kat[/name]- name to get the nickname [name]Katniss[/name] for a girl. Can’t use now because of the Hunger Games.
[name]Clove[/name]…Another Hunger Games name! I find [name]Clove[/name] to be a strong name that is unusual, yet usable. Out of the girls names I listed, I think [name]Clove[/name] is the most usable in today’s world.
Mirai…pronounced (MEE-rah-ee). Its a Japanese name. Being half Chinese, I think it would be a bit odd to not use a Chinese name if I was to use an [name]Asian[/name] name at all lol.
I dont think I would have a problem using any of the names in my sig but I would hesitate to use Soizic because I dont love it enough to overlook the criticism. As much as I love [name]Maxence[/name] Aristide the meaning is “the greatest, the best kind” and that’s too much even for me.
I wont give up [name]Jos[/name]éphine; [name]Jos[/name]éphine Athénaïs and [name]Ulysse[/name] Aristide are what I intend to name my kids but so for [name]Ive[/name] come up with [name]Josephine[/name] [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Josephine[/name] Bérengère and [name]Ulysse[/name] [name]Ambrose[/name] as compromises to use depending on where we live.
I forgot, I really liked Vincenza for awhile but it sounds dumb when I try to say Italian names the right way
I have one reason for not using any of the names below - my husband =)
[name]Seraphina[/name]
[name]Lenore[/name] and [name]Annabelle[/name] [name]Lee[/name] - love [name]Poe[/name]
[name]Petra[/name], [name]Nadia[/name], [name]Alessandra[/name], [name]Katarina[/name], and [name]Zara[/name]
I would love to name a girl Jordache. I have always liked [name]Jordan[/name] for a girl, but I would prefer something more unique. I think the “dash” sounding ending makes it sound kind cool and daring. Unfortunately, as many of you probably know, Jordache jeans were designer jeans very popular in the 80s/90s when I was growing up. I don’t know if the children that would go to school with my hypothetical daughter would catch this, but I’m sure their parents would.
I also like [name]Valencia[/name] but I think that is one of those names where you really have to own it.
The fact that people would pronounce it as “you-la-lee” is exactly what would probably stop me from using it. It makes it a bit lackluster. I love this pronunciation: http://www.forvo.com/word/eulalie/#fr (by [name]Justyna[/name]), I mean, how beautiful does it sound in her accent? I love it. Anyway, I do like [name]Eulalia[/name] as well, but it doesn’t have the [name]Poe[/name] connection. As far as [name]Eula[/name], honestly it sounds a little too “[name]Beverly[/name] Hillbillies” to me, especially when paired with [name]Mae[/name]. (No offense to anyone here named [name]Eula[/name].)
I love a lot of vintage, mauve-tinted, “old lady” names… [name]Agatha[/name], [name]Edith[/name], [name]Opal[/name] and [name]Sibyl[/name] are all in my top twenty or so, and I wouldn’t hesitate to use any of them. However, good sense (in the form of my husband) has vetoed some of my more “out there” vintage names, like [name]Dilys[/name], [name]Enid[/name] and [name]Euphemia[/name]. I still love them, though, dust and all!
I recently met an adorable five year old named [name]Athena[/name]! It totally worked on her. Very cute. I also knew one when I taught preschool years ago. She’d be 12 or 13 now. Oh, and my five year old friend has a three year old cousin named [name]Lucille[/name]. ADORABLE!!! They totally made both names wearable.
I love this comment! Soooo cute. I actually like [name]Jonelle[/name]. Very cute and obviously so very you! If he ever gets over whatever-it-is that husbands must, to see the truth about awesome names, I hope you are able to use it proudly! Gwenelle is a really neat name! [name]How[/name]'d your mom decide to bestow it on you?
And @ jaderain, after naming my first niece [name]Ruby[/name] [name]Alta[/name] (after deceased gramma’s on both sides), when my brother found out that they were expecting a second girl, he wanted to use [name]Hazel[/name]! Or [name]Pearle[/name]. His wife said, “Absolutely not!”…thank goodness! Some themes are just too much! At first, I had been in shock over naming a baby ‘[name]Ruby[/name]’ ~ she had always been my grandma!! ~ but when I realized that they were serious and time wasn’t going to change their minds, I realized it really was the perfect name… Not only because of my grandma, but both my brother and his wife were born in [name]July[/name] and so their birthstone is the ruby! (In fact, [name]Ruby[/name] celebrates her 1/2 birthday on my brother’s; it’s pretty cool!) They ended up naming baby #2 [name]Lexi[/name] [name]Morgan[/name].
I also have ‘out there’ names~ maybe not to you other berries~ but certainly to my beloved husband. sigh. He can’t see why a ‘stuffy old lady name’ like Beatrice would be in my top 3 names, but is there a more classic or lovely name? And how can you go wrong with her meaning, “Blessed; she who brings happiness”??? Oh, I just adore it! However, he does have a point when he says that any and all B names with our M last name would just be a disaster! LOL. I still say that unless someone rudely pointed out what that acronym stood for, by the time she’d actually understand it, she’s be so in love with her name, she wouldn’t care!! (His other great idea was to use Adelaide Rose Mc________, which doesn’t have the best initials either!) We love the name Nadia, meaning “hope”, but we both agree that you’d probably have to have some Russian~ not Irish~ heritage to pull that one off, so we came up with Natalia… I love the nn Talia, but I’m still not sure where that will go; maybe Natalia sounds like we’re trying to hard?? Some ladies in the office were making fun of a possible future employee by the name of Natalia. I guess Lavinia and Minerva might get the same reaction. One thing is for sure, you can’t please every one nor can you ever take the ideal out of an idealist
[name]Carlisle[/name], [name]Caspian[/name], [name]Viggo[/name], [name]Phineas[/name], and [name]Sebastian[/name] for boys. I just think they’re a bit too out there for the rest of the world.
[name]Astrid[/name], [name]Athena[/name], [name]Arwen[/name], [name]Deryn[/name], and [name]London[/name] for girls.
[name]Sonata[/name]
[name]Gypsy[/name] (so bad, but so cute! ugh.)
[name]Eilidh[/name] (what American can say this?! I absolutely love it, though)
[name]Navy[/name] (I think this is adorable for a girl, but coming from a family with [name]Air[/name] Force bred in the bones, I’m pretty sure I’d get tar-and-feathered for this one!)
[name]Phineas[/name] (probably my favorite [name]Finn[/name] name, but [name]Phinehas[/name] from the Bible is such a negative association for me!)
Ohh, and a bunch of Eastern European names/spellings, like Lilija, Gracja, [name]Zenobia[/name], [name]Ariadna[/name], [name]Rachela[/name], [name]Ziven[/name], Jonasz, [name]Eliasz[/name], [name]Oskar[/name], etc. I love them, but I don’t think anybody would ever catch on!
I’m sure there are others, but I can’t think of them atm.
[name]Cricket[/name], for a girl! I think it’s so cute…it makes me think of a summer night. I also love [name]Pepper[/name] for a girl, but that’s one I WOULD use. [name]Pepper[/name] and [name]Cricket[/name]–my little summer picnic.
