I am pregnant with my first baby but I am a step-mum to my husband’s two children from a previous marriage: [name_f]Cara[/name_f] (8) and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] (5). Obviously I had nothing to do with the naming of them and the style of their names is not my cup of tea. My husband is pretty lax about names and is quite happy leaving it mostly to me but with some input and he has vetoed a few names and I’m sure that is what happened with [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]’ mum when it came to naming them
I haven’t got anything against the names [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] but I happen to like names with a different style and I have always been a bit of a name nerd and had a more kooky style. My husband is really open to my style but he has said no to some ([name_m]RIP[/name_m] [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_f]Lisette[/name_f], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m], you will always have a place in my heart if not in my nursery ).
Now I shall get to my point: do you think that the naming style should match for half-siblings? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it would be unusual if [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] had a half brother or sister named [name_m]Orson[/name_m]/[name_u]Rafe[/name_u]/[name_m]Felix[/name_m]/[name_m]Xavier[/name_m] etc or [name_f]Romilly[/name_f]/[name_f]Aurora[/name_f]/[name_f]Anais[/name_f]/[name_f]Zinnia[/name_f] etc?
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] are classic so I think you’re safe to use any of your favorites. [name_m]Felix[/name_m] or [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] would be especially great!
I agree with the pps that the names you mentioned don’t feel very different to [name_f]Cara[/name_f] or [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] but some I’d definitely class as the same style.
The only one that doesn’t work would be aurora but only as it’s so close to cara. [name_u]Rafe[/name_u] also feels a little incomplete next to them but I still think it works!
It’s not like you want to name your child [name_u]Orion[/name_u] or [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m].
I think as long as you avoid names that are way too similar to [name_f]Cara[/name_f]/[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] (I’d agree [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] is cutting it close - but especially stuff like [name_m]Luke[/name_m] etc.) then it doesn’t particularly matter if they ‘match’. I know entire sibsets where they don’t match, and most of my friends with half-siblings don’t have names that are close. As long as you and husband are happy with the names, I don’t think it matters too much.
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] aren’t all that different in style than some of yours
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m]
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] and [name_f]Anais[/name_f]
[name_f]Cara[/name_f] [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
I wouldn’t even think a different person named them
[name_m]Just[/name_m] echoing the others - go what you love. [name_f]Cara[/name_f], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], and [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] might sound a bit odd, but I think all the names you’ve suggested would be just fine!
I think you’ve got lucky in that [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] don’t scream a particular style or theme, and I think you can basically go wherever you like with them
In fact, I think it’s quite common for parents to go more ‘out there’ with their later children, I think they really tend to get braver and having been around schoolfuls of children yearn for something a bit different
Pick whatever name you two decide on!
I really don’t understand the emphasis on being matchy-matchy with sibling names
I’ll admit, [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] and, say, [name_f]Maude[/name_f], would be a different pairing for siblings but I’d rather have different names than all matching
Good luck!
I think some the names you mentioned go fine with [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]! I would love to see a [name_f]Cara[/name_f], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m], and [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Romi[/name_f]!!)
Personally if/when I conceive, I won’t take into account my stepdaughters’ names. Of course, I won’t repeat names and certain ones too close are out of the question (I love [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but it’s too close to [name_f]Emily[/name_f]; I love [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] but too close to [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]; etc.) but stylistically, someone else’s choice of names should not dictate what I want to name my own child(ren). If you and your husband love a name, then go for it!
Actually, I think you could have had way worse luck! [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] look more trendy than the names you’re considering, but they aren’t horrible or invented trendy or kr8tif spellt, so you can go with pretty much anything you like and it won’t sound horrible. Of course, shorter names would look better on paper and of course a name with -ca would tie them all together: [name_f]Camille[/name_f], [name_f]Cassia[/name_f] (too matchy?), [name_m]Caius[/name_m], [name_m]Callahan[/name_m], [name_m]Cassius[/name_m], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Calliope[/name_f], [name_f]Calixta[/name_f], [name_m]Callum[/name_m], [name_m]Cadmus[/name_m], [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f], Chicago (lol), [name_f]Lucasta[/name_f], [name_m]Duncan[/name_m], [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], etc. I would avoid the K though, but in the end, go with whatever you love!
I think [name_f]Cara[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] can skew either very 80s/90s contemporary or kind of romantic, classic, accessible Italian/Mediterranean. That being said, I think someof the names in your signature would work nicely; [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and [name_m]Xavier[/name_m] standout for boys, and [name_f]Juliet[/name_f] and [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] for girls.
Also want to add that I think it’s very meaningful to try to connect your child’s name to your stepchildren’s, even just making sure the styles don’t clash. I have two half-sisters and I love that our middle names are all connected even though our first names are wildly different in style.
