I saw this article on a woman who names her children after cars. I was just wondering if you think this is ok?? I think its taking the idea of having related sibling names to the extreme!
I’m not against it, I honestly don’t see much of a problem with it. It’s never, ever anything I, myself, would do, though. It seems slightly tacky. I know a family who has two daughters, [name_u]Shelby[/name_u] and [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], both named after cars.
[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], [name_f]Porsche[/name_f] and [name_f]Alfa[/name_f]…[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] is a name often used to honour the Virgin [name_f]Mary[/name_f] by Catholics. [name_f]Portia[/name_f] was a Shakespearean name. [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] is the first letter of the Greek alphbet. If the names were spelled [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], [name_f]Portia[/name_f] and [name_f]Alpha[/name_f] perhaps they wouldn’t be so over-the-top and crass. I always think that naming children after luxury brands says a lot of the parents. They name their children after things they can only dream of having in real life which is kind of sad. I’m guessing that if they have a son he will be called [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] or [name_u]Royce[/name_u]. I don’t think Toyota would even be a consideration.
[name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] was legitimately a human name before it was a car name. though the association is strong.
[name_f]Portia[/name_f] is also a legitimate name so I could also see [name_f]Porscha[/name_f] as a corruption of the original name, no real harm done there especially as she pronounces them the same.
[name_u]Bentley[/name_u] (which she also wanted to use) was the last name of the creator of the car, so no real harm done there either.
I don’t get the [name_m]Frank[/name_m] and [name_u]Alfie[/name_u] connection as they seem like normal names.
The trend of giving them all car names is a bit extreme, but parents have done worse a la [name_m]Pilot[/name_m] Inspektor and [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]West[/name_u] so I do not think any of the names are too far out there. It definitely says a lot about the parents but not enough for me to be concerned.
It’s a bit tacky, but she went with names that are either already people names or close to them. If she went with Honda, Hyundai, or something like Expedition, then it would be too much. Then again, my initials/nickname is/are M. G., also a car name, and I get a kick out of the association.
I heard the name [name_f]Nova[/name_f] and liked it but when I told my dad he said that is a piece of sh** car. Haha. I wouldn’t have known. So… For example names that are common enough to not think “Like the car…” would be okay. But if I see [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] or [name_u]Lexus[/name_u] my mind goes to a car; so I wouldn’t.
Some are very beautiful names… But to echo [name_u]Mischa[/name_u]'s point, this reminds me of [name_m]Kanye[/name_m] [name_u]West[/name_u]'s lyrics in “All Falls Down” where he states “Couldn’t afford a car so she named her daughter [name_u]Alexis[/name_u].” It is an interesting topic to discuss regarding SES and such.
I think almost every name has an association for something. A food, a location a character on tv or in a book. Or an association from someone we have met, a medical condition a plant, almost anything. This limits the use of a lot if name, I try not to criticise, of course I have an opinion on many names I read about but if it’s negative I keep it to myself that is just how I was taught. Proud mother of [name_u]Alexis[/name_u] and no it’s not out of my reach to have a [name_u]Lexus[/name_u], I just think it’s a great name not to mention the fact the name has been around for hundred of years before the car and has a great meaning. If my child is judged by her nane she is better off not being around those who judge off of petty things .
I love the name [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], but due to the car reference, I would never use it. I think that everyone would immediately assume that it was after the car.
The only thing I dislike is the spelling of [name_f]Porsche[/name_f]. [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f] and [name_f]Portia[/name_f] are beautiful names.
I’ve said this before since [name_f]Portia[/name_f] is one of my favourite names- in my accent [name_f]Portia[/name_f] and [name_f]Porsche[/name_f] don’t sound quite the same. [name_f]Portia[/name_f] is por-shah, the “ah” like the A in [name_f]Ella[/name_f]. [name_f]Porsche[/name_f] is por-shuh, “uh” like the E in [name_f]Melissa[/name_f]. Similar, but different enough to tell them apart and for them to be totally different names to me. The woman spelled her daughter’s name [name_f]Porsche[/name_f] I think? (I would say [name_f]Porscha[/name_f] and [name_f]Portia[/name_f] the same though.)
It can be okay if it’s not obnoxious. I love [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], I have friends with that middle name. I don’t think it’s cute if you have more than a few children though, kinda corny.
I names my son Novah. [name_f]Every[/name_f] one loves it… We were making a list and i thought of the car because i have always wanted one and my boyfriend loved the name as well, so we added the H and there we had it… Our sons Name
There are names I like that are incidentally car names.
It’s not why I like them but these are good names:
[name_f]Cressida[/name_f]
[name_f]Lumina[/name_f]
Celica
[name_u]Royce[/name_u]
[name_u]Sierra[/name_u]
[name_f]Zafira[/name_f]
[name_f]Joy[/name_f]
Part of me even likes Impala. More for the graceful antelope side of things than the car though.
My dog’s name is [name_u]Bentley[/name_u] and I honestly had no idea it was a car. I didn’t figure it out until my vet asked me if I drove him to the clinic. I was so confused! Lol
As everyone else has said, there are several “car” names that were names before cars. I think its fine to use it because you love the name but tacky if you love the car.
My uncles initials are after different motor bikes as that is how my grandparents met. Its so subtle that you wouldn’t even realise unless you were told but it gives them a special bond.
