Naming Challenge!

[name]Hi[/name] Berries,

We”ve been trying for a while and while it is too soon to share with our friends and family, I”m thrilled that we have at last achieved a positive test just this morning!

We”ve got quite a naming challenge on our hands. I think his likes are boring and he thinks mine are too weird. Can you help us meet in the middle?

We are looking for boy and girl 2+syllable first names to go up against our formidable compound last name that sounds like VonLaurence, but begins with a B (so B names are out).

About us: late 30”s, living in NYC, watch a lot of PBS, listen to NPR and shop at our local farmer”s market. I guess we would be called yupsters, but with a serious splash of geek.

Bonus points for names from any of our heritages/culture/interests: [name]African[/name], Arab, [name]German[/name], Polish - Catholic Saints who would be embraced by hippies, science, arts, and humanities.

And as if I couldn”t ask for more ” meanings are important to both of us.

Can the awesome Berries come up with suggestions to put us on the right path?

Thanks!

(I”m not including any of our faves. I don’t want to sway the suggestions!)

Congrats on the pregnancy! This is quite a challege but I will give it a try. Dont qoute me on these meanings either!

[name]Hi[/name], and congratulations!

You sound like pretty cool people, and your last name sounds kind of awesome if I must say so myself. And, just a thought - alliteration can be cool, so don’t be too quick to throw out all B names just because you have a B last name, okay?

[name]Becket[/name] - For [name]St[/name]. [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Becket[/name], of course! Not only is he an appealing Catholic [name]Saint[/name], [name]Becket[/name] is mentioned in [name]Chaucer[/name]'s Canterbury Tales and [name]Melville[/name]'s [name]Moby[/name] [name]Dick[/name], along with countless other references throughout the arts! [name]Becket[/name] sounds hip, young, modern, and fresh, yet its historical basis grounds the name and provides a sturdy, strong, and handsome image.

[name]Leo[/name] - For [name]St[/name]. [name]Leo[/name] the Great, former Pope! [name]Leo[/name] was a pretty cool guy, if I can be so honest; he persuaded the Vandals to stop pillaging [name]Rome[/name] and harming its inhabitants! His feast day is [name]November[/name] 10, if that means anything to you. Not only is [name]Leo[/name] a cool, vintage, quirky [name]Saint[/name] name, it also conjures up an image of a handsome, witty man who is bright, powerful, and confident.

Gosh, I’ve run out of time! And brain power! Well, we’ll see if I think of some other names…

Thanks so much everyone! There were quite a few that I hadn’t considered and a few that are on my list!

I truly appreciate each of you who have taken the time to help us out.

I forgot to add that I also really like names that are found in multiple languages like [name]Dalia[/name] which is native to Hebrew and Arabic.

If I can just get him to come around to my mythology fixation…

Thanks again, it really does mean a lot!

I’m glad you found some possibilities!

Some more you may like (they feel exotic to me like [name]Dalia[/name], and some are used in multiple cultures):

may I suggest

http://www.babynamewizard.com/namipedia/advanced-name-finder

You can customize it to: must be 2 syllables, can’t start with b. And then there are about 15 other categories that you can require or exclude like saints names, muslim, jewish, traditional, place name, etc… You can also set the popularity

Thanks, I have spent an embarrassing amount of time at babynamewizard. I love the database, but it can’t beat input from folks who love names.

Then I will share with you my two favorite girl names:
[name]Adele[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name]. [name]Both[/name] are saints names and multicultural

Another [name]Cora[/name] was created by [name]James[/name] Finemore [name]Cooper[/name] for “The Last of the Mohicans” It’s probably based off of [name]Kore[/name] (maiden) which was another term for [name]Persephone[/name].
