Naming Characters From Other Decades or Time Periods

[name_m]How[/name_m] do all of you find names when you are naming characters from other decades? I find that I’m never sure about the names I choose, even if they seem right and are in the top 1000 names. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think that all of the names in the top 1000 would work for that decade? Should I narrow it down to the top 100?

The name in question right now is [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]. I’m writing a story that takes place in the early 80’s, i’m thinking 1982 or 1983, and my character is sixteen meaning she would be born in 1966 or 1967. [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] was in the 281st spot in 1967, but I’m not sure if that means it would be familiar enough for that decade. Thoughts?

[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] is totally fine for your character! [name_m]Even[/name_m] if it was lower in popularity, it is still usable. When creating historical characters, I get unsure about names too. But any name in the top 1000 should work. If you love the name, just use it; don’t overthink it :slight_smile:

yes, names in the top 1000 for any decade would work very well and be a very safe choice. and rosemary is one of my favourite names. good luck. xx
