Naming Charlotte's Twin Sisters

We have one daughter named [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] and we are adding in twin girls this spring. My husband and I are stuck. We love the name [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] because it is familiar, pretty without being prissy, classy, and allows her a nickname that we don’t hate ([name_u]Charlie[/name_u] or [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]) if she ever chooses to use one.

With our twins, we want something equally feminine but not as popular. We seem to be gravitating towards a regal edge, but sometimes we border on “old lady.” The name has to be something everyone’s heard of that has gone through their ancestory, watched [name_m]Little[/name_m] House on the Prarie or [name_m]Walton[/name_m]'s Mountain, and easy to pronounce for teachers. We are shying away from beautiful names such as [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], and [name_f]Grace[/name_f] because of popularity… though we like the simple class these names have, too. (Nothing prissy/fussy or ending in a bell or bella).

So far our top contenders are:

[name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (though we are probably taking it off because of its popularity)
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (though we don’t like that it means the same thing as [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f])
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (though we don’t like that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] means bitter)
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]

Any favorites or ideas we are missing? We have narrowed down our list A LOT to these few…

(It may be of significance to mention, too, if we do end up having a little boy, he will be named Troy Eugene after his father.)

I really love:

[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]

If I had to pair them up I would say: [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f].

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - I will always advocate for [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. It’s one of the prettiest names I’ve ever heard. I ALWAYS have wished I were named [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. It’s serious and intelligent and light at the same time.
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (though we are probably taking it off because of its popularity) - I would prefer [name_f]Eve[/name_f] over [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]. I don’t like -lyn endings.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (though we don’t like that it means the same thing as [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]) - instant no! being a name nerd as myself, I’d wince to see two siblings named [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. (But I do think [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is beautiful)
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - Yes! [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] sound like two peas in a pod, so cozy.
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - I’m going to pass on [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]. I know too many, and it feels so stern and matronly to me. Either that or just bland.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - Oh yes!! [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] would be so cute.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - I think the name works with pretty much any sibset. It’s extremely versatile.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - A little better than [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], but then here we’re moving into a real Southern US zone as far as names go. I just can’t help but hear a soft strung-out “Eliiiiiza” with a thick southern accent.
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (though we don’t like that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] means bitter) - Instant no. Your daughter is already [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f], no? [name_f]Mary[/name_f] = [name_f]Marie[/name_f].
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] - I infinitely prefer [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], with a C. It’s very regal to me.

[name_f]Edith[/name_f]- I really like [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and I think it goes well with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] (though we are probably taking it off because of its popularity)- I also think [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] goes well with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. Have you checked your state’s top 100 list? Some names are less popular in certain states.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] (though we don’t like that it means the same thing as [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f])- Although, I really like [name_f]Caroline[/name_f], they are way too similar.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]- [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] is nice, and it goes well with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]- I really like that [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] is classic, regal, and has great nicknames like [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] and [name_f]Libby[/name_f].
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]- [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] has been growing on me and it matches with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]- [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] are lovely together
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]- I really like [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] as a stand alone name and as a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] (though we don’t like that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] means bitter)- I prefer the other names on your list
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f]- [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is always regal and elegant.

I think you have an excellent list.

My favourites on your list are [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. If you would like to consider others, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and…

[name_f]Justine[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] (I think [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] is spunkier than [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] but still a classic)
[name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]
[name_f]Dinah[/name_f]
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecile[/name_f]/[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]

You have such beautiful taste in names!! I vote for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - [name_u]Jo[/name_u] and [name_f]Mae[/name_f]!

My suggestions:

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]

I absolutely love [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] from your list!
Other options:
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeline[/name_f] (or [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f])
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivianna[/name_f] (Or [name_f]Viviana[/name_f])
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaux[/name_f]

What a lovely list you have. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is also beautiful. My first thought that I don’t care for is the repetition of first letters of names, whether it’s a entire group of siblings, or just two. I know, odd, I just don’t care for it. I much prefer [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] together compared to [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] for this reason.

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - I can’t bring myself to love this name. I think partly because I have a 95 year old great aunt [name_f]Edith[/name_f].
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - I really like this name, the only [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] I’ve ever met was a teenager at the Y
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]LOVE[/name_u], but it’s a no go for me because it means the same thing as [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and the “C”.
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - Really cute! I wouldn’t use it myself, but with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] it’s a winner.
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - Classic and beautiful. Endless possibilities for nicknames. Also ages well.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - As much as I want to like it, I can’t. It looks very pretty, but I don’t like how it sounds.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - Classic and beautiful. Also ages very well.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - so much spunk, yet girly at the same time. It really reminds me of your description of [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - I like it, but I don’t love it. It’s very classy and timeless. I think with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] I prefer [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] without [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] - Another beautiful and timeless time. Ages beyond well! I’ve met infants, toddlers, children, teenagers, and adults. I prefer the “K” spelling.

My favorites from your list:
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]

My favorite combos from your list:

  1. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]
  2. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]

My suggestions:
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Carolina[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Lillian[/name_f]
[name_f]Madeleine[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] such a beautiful name and I really like the boy name to [name_m]Troy[/name_m] [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]. You have great taste.

I really like all your suggestions. Here are some names that you might like and add to the list. Any thoughts on middle names?

[name_f]Adeline[/name_f]
[name_f]Agnes[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexandrine[/name_f]
[name_f]Alexia[/name_f]
[name_f]Anne[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f]
[name_f]Elsie[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]

[name_f]Ottilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Savannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Sibylla[/name_f]
[name_f]Victoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f]
[name_f]Wilma[/name_f]/[name_f]Velma[/name_f]

twins names mabel and edith would make me swoon pretty hard, especially with a sister named charlotte. i also love eliza, and would stay away from caroline and catherine because they’re too similar to charlotte.

how about:
miriam
beatrix
olive
frances
violet
georgia

Congrats! My thoughts:

[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - this would go wonderfully with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. but if you are eliminating it, maybe you’d consider [name_f]Imogen[/name_f]? similar meaning/flow… can be an acquired taste for Americans, and it’s gaining popularity itself… but just a thought!
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - no with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], both feminizations of [name_m]Charles[/name_m]. I love both, but generally think it’s either/or.
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - love.
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - nice with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - love.

I think [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] & [name_f]Edith[/name_f] would work. Maybe [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] & [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you like any [name_f]Rose[/name_f]- names? [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosaline[/name_f]… [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]… [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f]… [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], etc.

Good luck!

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] - not a big fan
[name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] - this is my great grandmother’s name, I loved it when I was younger and it’s still a gp despite its recent popularity
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - Cute, but I don’t like it with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].
[name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - not a fan
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - works best as a middle name imo, [name_f]Libby[/name_f] is the best nickname
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] - my favorite of the one’s you listed. I love this name so much!
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - I like it both as a fn/mn.
[name_f]Eliza[/name_f] - cute, spunky
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - not a fan
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f]/[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] - prefer [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] hands down. If you started a C trend I feel as if having [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and one twin with a C name would make you slightly hard-pressed for another C name though. Not really, but that is what I know I’d force myself to do.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] & [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] & [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] & [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], Jospehine & [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] & [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] & [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] & [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u]

I love the names on your list.
My favorites:

[name_f]Catherine[/name_f] & [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] & [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]

We’ve gotten some AWESOME input and name suggestions thus far… including a couple we are considering adding to our list and a couple we have decided to take off ([name_f]Caroline[/name_f] for one)! Thank you!

I was asked if we had thought about middle names and so far I keep going back to [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] for middle names since [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f], and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] are my top runners for first names. Since [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] has my middle name and a boy would have my husband’s, we want names with meaning. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] means “pledged to God” and [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] means "Jehovah increases. " We are also considering [name_f]Judith[/name_f] (my husband’s grandmother’s name), and [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] (my great-grandmother’s last name was Ellenburg).

A lot of the names suggested like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] are ones we love but have nixed for some reason or another. Others are names we have already heard some of our peers name their kids and aren’t in love with enough to name ours the same ([name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] has been the only exception, thus far). And still others are names of “that kid” we went to elementary school with or “that co-worker” who ruined the name for us…

As for the “[name_f]Rose[/name_f]” names, I love them. However, there are a lot of Roses, Rubys, and Scarletts where we live. But thank you for the suggestions! It really helps getting more opinions and perspectives on what flows for twins and in conjunction with [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f].
