Naming Dragons

[Sorry for the SUPER [name_m]LONG[/name_m] POST! Thanks in advance for reading it!]

Everybody likes dragons, right? For a story of mine, dragons are an everyday part of life. [name_f]Every[/name_f] person (once they come of age) has their own dragon who can “talk” (think more along the lines of ESP and telepathy) to them and to them only.

First: the dragons are NOT what you most likely picture when you think of dragons. They are about knee-high or shorter (more like a dog) and do not necessarily like to breathe fire. I suppose you could think of them more like a giant lizard. They have gray/green (most of them) scales that cover their bodies, long(er) tails, and large nostrils that may occasionally let out a puff of smoke.

The dragons tend to have their own personalities, normally matching their owner’s personalities (ie. energetic, grumpy, isolated, etc). They don’t always match every single little detail (ie. scared of spiders or something like that).

I’m looking for several dragon names. If you have some names that just sound like good dragon names, that is great; please post them! Or, if you would like some more guidance, I need names for dragons to match some owner’s personalities. ** Note: most of the dragons are male, so focus more on those. There are a few females, though.

The names can be either more futuristic OR more traditional. The story is fantasy (if you couldn’t already tell). Either will work. Some names I am using for dragons: [name_u]Dai[/name_u], [name_m]Kendrick[/name_m], [name_u]Finn[/name_u], [name_u]Elliot[/name_u].

[name_m]Oslo[/name_m]: Reserved, almost “socially awkward”, not outgoing but speaks up for what is right

[name_u]Galen[/name_u]: Nerdy, very book smart, also “socially awkward”, has a “knack” for psychology

[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]: Bossy, thinks she’s always “in charge”, curt

[name_u]Fable[/name_u]: Quiet, submissive, intelligent,

[name_m]Dax[/name_m]: Passionate about one thing: fighting / weaponry,

[name_m]Ezra[/name_m]: calm, cool, and collected, peacemaker, loves to help people (he’s a medic)

[name_u]Rhys[/name_u]: Mysterious, solemn, has an edge to him

[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]: Serious when needs to be, but otherwise a bit of a jokester. Protective.

THANK YOU!

I like the idea of virtue names on a dragon, something like [name_f]Pleasant[/name_f], [name_f]Patience[/name_f] or [name_m]Prosper[/name_m]. Especially if it’s ironic. So [name_f]Patience[/name_f] and his human are very hot headed, [name_m]Prosper[/name_m] and his human have the worst luck, etc. Something that might help you find the right names is to consider who within the story named the dragon. For instance, if their parents named them it might be something different than if one of your human characters named it. Cool concept, and good luck!!

Thanks for the ideas. I like using the virtue names for at least a few of the dragons. The dragons have their names, though, normally before they are “assigned” / given to the humans (usually around age 5). That, and I’m really, really bad at making decisions / naming on my own. But thanks. I’m still welcoming more ideas!

I tried to pick names that weren’t too human but still felt like names for dragons.

If it helps you could try going to fantasynamegenerators.com, they have a few dragon name generators that might be of use. You could also use one of their other generators if the names don’t feel quite right to you (personally I think that the cat generator comes out with some really good names).
