Naming extras?

Greetings and salutations, beautiful people! I have returned to this glorious and enlightened corner of the internet to humbly ask for your naming expertise once again. If you would be so inclined as to offer me your assistance, I will be forever grateful. :blush:

I’m hopefully less than a week away from completing the second draft of my WIP, and as I’m winding down, I have come up with a list of details I wish to add as I move into the next stage of this project. One thing I want to do is add more named characters, specifically looking at the crew of my MC’s pirate ship.

I’m looking for some fresh ideas. The story takes place in a fantasy world loosely based on fairytales and set on a continent that somewhat resembles medieval Europe (I say ā€œsomewhatā€ because I do take creative liberty in terms of what inventions exist, given the fact that this is a world of my own creation). I’ve found myself drawn to many different origins for names but I think the only style I’m avoiding is too modern (such as [name_f]Kinsley[/name_f], [name_u]Brayden[/name_u], etc.). Other than that, I’m open to pretty much anything, BOYS, GIRLS or UNISEX.

Here are some named characters so far, to give you a sense of the style:
[name_f]Petra[/name_f]
[name_m]Zac[/name_m] (short for [name_m]Zaccai[/name_m])
[name_m]Emre[/name_m]
[name_f]Ksenia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mabyn[/name_f]
[name_u]Rafe[/name_u]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Ramone[/name_m]
Awen
AzƩlie
[name_f]Lilwen[/name_f]

I have kingdoms loosely based on Spain, [name_f]France[/name_f], [name_f]Italy[/name_f], [name_m]Germany[/name_m], [name_f]England[/name_f], Norway, [name_f]Russia[/name_f], Hungary, and [name_f]Arabia[/name_f] (but there are mentions of other kingdoms/countries in places inspired by [name_f]Asia[/name_f], [name_f]Africa[/name_f], and [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u], I just haven’t fully developed those yet). Basically, any origin you can think of will probably be represented!

Thank you! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I know you said you were looking for other names but I just have something to say about the names you currently have (I’m going to make this as nice as possible, I know how difficult it is to choose names).

I don’t think it’s a great idea to have accents in names. Like AzĆ©lie.

And [name_f]Ksenia[/name_f] looks a little strange. [name_m]How[/name_m] about just Senia?

Unless of course, this affects the story, in which case you should keep those names.

[name_f]Happy[/name_f] writing! :heart:

I appreciate the advice but all of this is something I’ve considered.

Accents are part of other languages. AzƩlie is a [name_u]French[/name_u] name, and the character is from a kingdom that speaks a language resembling [name_u]French[/name_u], so the accent and the name works for her. I also have characters named ZoƩ and SzebasztiƔn (although he is called Szeb most of the time), and their names and spellings were chosen with great care and thought.

I don’t like Senia. It wouldn’t fit the character at all and doesn’t have the same feel or origin as [name_f]Ksenia[/name_f]. I actually did wonder if [name_f]Ksenia[/name_f] would be too difficult to pronounce which is why I asked several of my friends how they would pronounce the name. All of them were able to do so without difficulty.

And, if people do have trouble, I plan on putting a glossary at the end of the book :blush:

Oh great! I just wanted to make sure that everything would flow nicely throughout the story and names play a big part in storytelling! Names also have to fit the character so I can see why you would choose to keep [name_f]Ksenia[/name_f], and linguistics plays a big part in names too so Azelie’s (I’m on a computer right now and don’t know how to use accents with a computer keyboard lol) name fits with her background!

Happy writing!

@EJpuddlejumper, thank you! I’ve added [name_m]Conroy[/name_m], [name_m]Radcliffe[/name_m], [name_m]Wilmer[/name_m], [name_f]Querida[/name_f], [name_f]Delyth[/name_f], and [name_f]Azami[/name_f] to my list!
There’s actually a minor character in the other series I’m working on in this world named [name_f]Kerensa[/name_f], so you were right on the nose with the suggestions!!

@Peach_Tree, thank you! I’ve added [name_f]Evette[/name_f], [name_m]Silas[/name_m], [name_u]Dominique[/name_u], [name_f]Saga[/name_f], and [name_f]Oline[/name_f] to the list!
[name_f]Sahar[/name_f] is actually the name of the capital city of one of the kingdoms (and one of the middle names of the MC in the other series in this world).

You guys must be psychic?! :wink:
