I’m new here and have been reading through the forums trying to find names for our daughter, due in [name_u]January[/name_u]. Since you are all so good with names, I thought maybe you could help and give me your honest opinions on the names we have on our list!
Our last name is [name_u]Lee[/name_u] and I’ve found it a bit challenging to find a first name that flows well. Here is our short list:
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] - I’ve always loved this name and it doesn’t seem to be that popular (I want to avoid anything too popular)
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - My only hesitation here is that I hate the nn “[name_u]Ronnie[/name_u],” otherwise, I think it is perfect
[name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] - Also considering [name_f]Mirabella[/name_f]. If she has to have a nn, it would be [name_f]Mira[/name_f], not [name_f]Belle[/name_f] or [name_f]Bella[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - I love it, my husband isn’t very fond of it
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - We both love it, but we’re worried people would mispronounce it
I’m open to suggestions, as well.
She will have two middle names: one Korean (My [name_f]MIL[/name_f] will pick) and one English. The names in my family that we could honour are [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_u]Marion[/name_u] and [name_f]Ann[/name_f], but I hate these names, so I’m open to anything if you have suggestions.
If it helps, our son’s name is [name_m]Cooper[/name_m].
Those are all great names! [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] sort of locks you into a same-sound set, but [name_u]Piper[/name_u] is cute. I know one, who is 10, but have heard it around town in the kid set here and there. I don’t think it’s overly popular, but enough girls are being named that that you hear it out and about. I personally love your other four choices more…with [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] being my least favorite just because I can’t think of a nn either! I wouldn’t worry too much about people pronouncing [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] a different way than you say it. [name_m]Just[/name_m] tell them, “We say…” That’s what I do with some of my kids’ names and it’s not too much of an issue, truly. I love the nn [name_f]Laidy[/name_f] with [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f]!
Combo’s might be:
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f]
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_f]Alice[/name_f] (do you like [name_f]Alice[/name_f]? It seems to fit there and has a bit most spice than [name_f]Ann[/name_f])
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_u]Marion[/name_u]
What about [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_u]Piper[/name_u]? Or [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_u]Piper[/name_u]? or [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] as the first name? [name_u]Josie[/name_u] is quite cute with [name_m]Cooper[/name_m]!
You have nice choices all around, I think! Good luck!
The ones from your list that I particularly adore are:
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] - It’s spunky and fits well with [name_m]Cooper[/name_m].
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - [name_f]One[/name_f] of my closest friends is named [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], she goes by [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], [name_m]Vero[/name_m], or V, nobody has ever called her [name_u]Ronnie[/name_u].
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - This name is beautiful.
Suggestions for Alternative Middle Names
[name_f]Ann[/name_f] - have you considered [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Antoinette[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - have you considered [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] could be [name_f]Vera[/name_f], [name_f]Nica[/name_f], [name]Nic[/name], [name]Nici[/name], even just V.
[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] and how do you think would people mispronounce it?
I think my favourite of your choices is [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] but [name_f]Piper[/name_f] is cute too (but I feel like if you ever had another daughter, names like [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] or [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] wouldn’t work with [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] and [name_f]Piper[/name_f]).
Congrats on your pregnancy and welcome to Nameberry! Here are my thoughts on your list.
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] - very trendy and getting popular. This name has skyrocketed up the US charts (from No# 701 in 1999 to No# 98 in 2012 - that’s 3,038 girls born last year were given this name). Two other issues: (1) [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] are both occupational names that end the same way so they’re too matchy and (2) [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] sounds like a cartoon because it’s so cute. I don’t think it would age well.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - This name is gorgeous with your surname (I love the long first name with a short last name). A [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] can be given the nn [name_f]Vera[/name_f] or [name_f]Nica[/name_f].
[name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] - I prefer the [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f] spelling but that’s just my preference. The l’s in this name and your surname aren’t ideal for flow (it sounds like Mirabelee).
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - I like this name but again the l’s aren’t good for a smooth flow. If your husband doesn’t like it, I would eliminate it.
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - I adore this name but [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is too heavy on the l’s. Ideally, it would be best to avoid names with l’s and “ee” sounds (yeah, it’s tough :)).
Other Suggestions
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (doesn’t have an “l”)
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Vanessa[/name_f]
[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] (this l is ok because it’s the first syllable)
[name_u]Simone[/name_u]
[name_f]Margot[/name_f]
[name_f]Constance[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]
[name_f]Araminta[/name_f]
[name_f]Adrienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Miranda[/name_f]
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Augusta[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodora[/name_f]
[name_f]Roberta[/name_f]
[name_f]Oriana[/name_f]
[name_f]Roxana[/name_f]
[name_f]Marianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Corinne[/name_f] (ok if it’s pronounced "ko-[name_f]RIN[/name_f])
I love the idea of [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_u]Piper[/name_u]! It’s very sweet and happy, and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is quite timeless and lush with feminine charm. [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] and [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] are nice. I think [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [Korean name] would be lovely.
What about [name_f]Felicity[/name_f]? It seems to have some of the charm of your other favorites, and I think [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] and [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] are darling together.
I think that [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] and [name_u]Piper[/name_u] have the best flow with your last name. I like all of them, but [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] is my favorite - unusual yet classic. It has the same beautiful sound as [name_f]Annabel[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] (the poem) without being too close/cheesy. [name_f]Mirabella[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] does not sound nearly as good.
My faves are [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] and [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] is distinct with a modern and feminine sound (all without crossing into cutesy territory)
I also like [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] as I find it to be classy and classic. I always think of [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_u]Lake[/name_u] when I hear this name.
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] just isn’t my cup of tea.
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is a very trendy name and I think it will be dated, but it’s always best to strike when the iron is hot so if you like it, now is the best time to use it.
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] I can see objectively as a beautiful classy and classic name but it isn’t my cup of tea.
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]- any [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] derivative like [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Maisie[/name_f], [name_f]Megan[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. However my favorite for you is [name_f]Greta[/name_f]. [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] means [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] so maybe you might want to consider [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] or [name_f]Perla[/name_f] (spanish version of [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]).
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]- [name_u]Josie[/name_u], [name_f]Josanne[/name_f] or maybe go with the phi sound, [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] or [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].
[name_u]Marion[/name_u]- [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Marin[/name_f], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_f]Maria[/name_f], [name_f]Mariya[/name_f], [name_f]Mariah[/name_f]
[name_f]Ann[/name_f]- [name_f]Anja[/name_f], [name_f]Anya[/name_f]
Thank you for the comments so far! To clarify the pronunciation of [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - I fell in love with the name when I first studied As You Like It and my professor always pronounced it [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-ah-lind. I had no prior knowledge of the name, so only recently realized the traditional pronunciation is [name_f]Roz[/name_f]-a-lind. If we go with [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], it will be [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-ah-lind, so I worry that we’ll always be correcting people. I think if it weren’t for that concern, this little girl would be [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f].
Someone mentioned [name_f]Felicity[/name_f], which I hadn’t thought of before. I love it! And I also like the spelling [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f], though that is the name of an airport in Montreal (we’re in [name_f]Canada[/name_f]), which is why I didn’t think to spell it that way. I do like it, though.
Hmm…
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] - Not my thing, I just find the name unappealing.
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - I’m sorry for the negativity, but again I dislike [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], I find the name harsh in sound.
[name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] - I prefer [name_f]Mirabel[/name_f] spelling wise but still it’s a lovely choice very elegant and [name_f]Mirabella[/name_f] is also cool.
[name_f]Belle[/name_f] - A lovely name, very light and dainty. [name_f]Belle[/name_f] is a [name_m]French[/name_m] classic oozing beauty and class. I also love [name_f]Bella[/name_f] which has slightly more spunk.
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - A great place name. [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is classy, has a range of great nicknames my favourite being [name_f]Addie[/name_f].
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f] name! I wouldn’t worry about pronunciation issues, to be honest once you say my name is ‘insert name’ people will pronounce the name that way without issues.
I love your family names to be honest they are great choices : )
Have you thought of using names similar to style of your family names…?
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f] - [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_f]Joan[/name_f], [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f], [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] - [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Louise[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_u]Marion[/name_u] - [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], [name_f]Marie[/name_f], [name_f]Ellen[/name_f], [name_f]Majorie[/name_f], [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ann[/name_f] - [name_f]Jane[/name_f], Annelies, [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_f]Therese[/name_f], [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Anais[/name_f], [name_f]Anya[/name_f]
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] - I’ve always found this appealing, but I don’t like it with [name_m]Cooper[/name_m]
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - I don’t think [name_u]Ronnie[/name_u] is an obvious nickname, so you could definitely get away with it.
[name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] - With -belle and -bella names being so popular, I would prefer just [name_f]Mira[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Mira[/name_f] is a lovely name all on its own, and doesn’t seem incomplete.
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - Gorgeous vintage feeling name, but there’s no way to avoid the uber popular nn [name_f]Addie[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - I’ve had this same confusion with the pronunciation, rose-uh-lind or roz-un-lind. I agree that I much prefer the softer rose-uh-lind, but I have no idea how common the different pronunciations are. I do like the name though!
Suggestions:
[name_u]Vivian[/name_u]/[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] - if you like the V of [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]
[name_f]Miriam[/name_f] - I’ve seen another poster consider [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mira[/name_f], and I thought it was adorable!
[name_f]Rosaline[/name_f] - Very similar to [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], but with a soft -line or -lyn ending. Though this may just create more pronunciation issues that you would have with [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]! I would say it rose-uh-line, and I think it’s just gorgeous.
[name_f]Rosa[/name_f] - [name_f]One[/name_f] way to avoid all of those pronunciation issues is to just go with [name_f]Rosa[/name_f]. I think it’s a beautiful full name in its own right, and it has some nice positive associations with it ([name_f]Rosa[/name_f] [name_m]Parks[/name_m]). Nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] is also cute.
I am a big fan of [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]. I know a girl with that name and people actually all her [name_u]Nikki[/name_u] for a NN, I don’t know if you like that any better?
Going with the V theme, some suggestions could be [name_f]Victoria[/name_f], [name_f]Vanessa[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f].
I’m at a loss for a middle name suggestion. I’d choose [name_f]Ann[/name_f] from your list to go with [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] though. [name_f]Veronica[/name_f] [name_f]Ann[/name_f] (insert [name_f]MIL[/name_f] name) [name_u]Lee[/name_u] sounds nice.
I’ve only seen [name_u]Roni[/name_u] as a nn for [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]–not the hypermasculine [name_u]Ronnie[/name_u]. In any case, [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] ([name_f]Vivi[/name_f])?
Since my daughters name is [name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] obviously that’s my favorite. However I never even considered the name [name_u]Piper[/name_u], I absolutely love it. I think [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] sounds beautiful. Also I feel like [name_u]Piper[/name_u] and [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] go extremely well together. They just sound good and I don’t think they are too close in sounds. Also maybe your husband would prefer [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] more than [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] or [name_f]Adelynn[/name_f] is really pretty.
[name_f]Adelynn[/name_f] [name_u]Marion[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] goes really well together in my mind.
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] to hear what your thoughts are!
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] - I like [name_u]Piper[/name_u], but you have a [name_m]Cooper[/name_m]. As a mn, maybe?
[name_f]Veronica[/name_f] - I adore [name_f]Veronica[/name_f]. [name_f]One[/name_f] of my dearest friends is [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], nn [name_m]Vero[/name_m]. No [name_u]Ronnie[/name_u] at all.
[name_f]Mirabelle[/name_f] - Pretty, but not my favourite. I love [name_f]Belle[/name_f] names, but with [name_f]Mira[/name_f] in the front, I prefer [name_f]Miranda[/name_f].
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] - I really like this one, but dislike nn [name_f]Addie[/name_f].
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] - [name_m]Ah[/name_m]… I have [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] there on my signature, right? I pronounce it with both pronunciation, sometimes with [name_f]Rose[/name_f]-, the other time with [name_f]Roz[/name_f]- (weird, I know)
[name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is gorgeous, reminds me of [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] and flows really well.
Another vote for [name_u]Piper[/name_u] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] [name_u]Lee[/name_u], and I think it’s lovely with [name_m]Cooper[/name_m].
