Naming our third

We have [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (goes by [name_f]Elli[/name_f]) and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f], and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] are all family names. If we have another girl the only family name left is [name_f]Edith[/name_f], which I love but I’m having a hard time convincing DH and I don’t really want another E name so I think I would prefer to use it as a mn. We both really like [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]…[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]? Is that too much?

For a boy my husband has always wanted to use [name_m]Vincent[/name_m], family names are [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m], [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Harry[/name_m]. The only combo I like from thay is [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m], any other suggestions?

Would it be weird not to use a family name for the third since [name_f]Elli[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] are both named after someone?

[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] goes so perfectly with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f]! Definitely.

I think [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] is a nice name. Butif you aren’t as keen on [name_m]John[/name_m], you could use a form of [name_m]John[/name_m]… Maybe [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m]? Or [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m]? [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]?
Or what about [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m], since [name_m]Harry[/name_m] is actually a form of [name_m]Henry[/name_m]? Or [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Harrison[/name_m] could work, too.

I don’t think it would be weird. Nobody would know that except you. Plus, the names you like fit perfectly with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f]. I really like [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f], but I think I prefer [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]. [name_f]Elli[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] are lovely (maybe [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] sounds too much like Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u], but I think it’s just my perception as a fan).

For boys, [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] is very handsome. [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] are very traditional and “common” names, so my first thought is a brother called either [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_m]Harry[/name_m] (have you thought about [name_m]Henry[/name_m]?). [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] or [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m].

[name_u]Love[/name_u] your girls’ names! I love the idea of [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] as a fn, but agree that [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] seems to flow a little better. What about [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] as a way to honor [name_f]Edith[/name_f]? I like the flow much better. I don’t think it matters if the 3rd baby has a family name, but if that’s important to you, what about using some female names to honor [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m], or [name_m]Harry[/name_m]? I really love [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as a fn for you-- it fits great with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and could honor [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m] (by the pronunciation) and [name_m]John[/name_m].

[name_m]Vincent[/name_m] is a great name and works well with your sibset. [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m]/[name_m]Harry[/name_m]/[name_m]Harold[/name_m] work well. [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Wayne[/name_m] sounds less dated than [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m], but I really like [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_u]Dane[/name_u] as a way to honor [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m].

Some other possibilities (names that can honor or just ones that I think would work well with your sibset:

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]/[name_f]Elli[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f], and

[name_f]Daina[/name_f]/[name_u]Dana[/name_u]
[name_f]Davina[/name_f] (to honor [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m] and similar to [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f])
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]
[name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Edwina[/name_f] (to honor [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m] and [name_f]Edith[/name_f]-- love [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] as a nn)
[name_f]Gwyneth[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] (to honor [name_m]Harry[/name_m] and [name_m]John[/name_m])
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] (nn [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Jacqueline[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]
[name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]
[name_u]Jean[/name_u]
[name_f]Joanna[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucinda[/name_f]
[name_u]Meredith[/name_u] (probably mn only as too similar to [name_f]Mary[/name_f])
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Virginia[/name_f]

[name_u]Dane[/name_u]
[name_m]David[/name_m]
[name_u]Evan[/name_u]
[name_m]Ian[/name_m]
[name_m]Harold[/name_m]
[name_m]Ivo[/name_m]
[name_m]Joseph[/name_m], [name_m]Joel[/name_m], [name_m]Jonathan[/name_m]
[name_m]Nathan[/name_m]
[name_m]Sean[/name_m]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_m]Wayne[/name_m]
[name_m]Wesley[/name_m]
[name_m]Winston[/name_m] (combo of [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] and [name_m]Dwayne[/name_m])

I love your daughters’ names! Personally I don’t care much for [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], but I do think it sounds nice with [name_f]Edith[/name_f]. Have you thought about using a feminization of a male family name? Like [name_f]Jane[/name_f] to honor [name_m]John[/name_m]? [name_f]Jane[/name_f] seems like the perfect sister for [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] in my mind.

For a boy name, I think [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]John[/name_m] is very handsome. But like someone else pointed out, there are tons of different forms of [name_m]John[/name_m] you could consider if you aren’t in love with it.

Good luck!

I was a little worried about the Downton association with [name_f]Edith[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f] too. My husband isn’t a huge fan of [name_f]Edith[/name_f] anyway and probably won’t go for it as a first name, I do think [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] flows better though.

I do like the suggestion of [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_u]Meredith[/name_u], and I love [name_f]Jane[/name_f]. I think I’m set on using [name_f]Edith[/name_f] (or [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]) if it’s a girl this time, it’s my grandmother’s name and I’ve always loved it and I’ve felt guilty that we didn’t use it with the other two girls. It has taken me this long to get my husband on board with it as a middle name haha. I really like [name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] if DH can be convinced. Do you think Edie and Elli are too similar if we were to use it as a fn?

I like [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f], they balance each other out - [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] is a little girly and [name_f]Edith[/name_f] cools it down.

Instead of [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Harry[/name_m], try [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] or [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] [name_m]Hank[/name_m]

As long as the third name is inspired by something just as meaningful as a namesake I think its fine it may not be directly after a person. Could be associated with the place your husband proposed or with a pastime you both love doing together. [name_m]Eli[/name_m], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] + random name you just like may not fit in this situation.

I think the names [name_f]Elli[/name_f] and [name_f]Edie[/name_f] are too close for sisters. I also think that [name_f]Mary[/name_f] is going to feel left out having an odd first initial letter. [name_f]Elli[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Edie[/name_f]. Also, have you decided what you will call or nickname [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f]?

I personally do not think [name_f]Lavinia[/name_f] goes well with [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f], which are such classic names. I like the idea of using [name_f]Jane[/name_f], which would also honor [name_m]John[/name_m]. Since you are set on honoring [name_f]Edith[/name_f], I would suggest [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_f]Edith[/name_f] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Meredith[/name_u], which I think flows better and has the name edith in it.

[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Coraline[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Meredith[/name_u]
[name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f]
[name_f]Elli[/name_f], [name_f]Mary[/name_f] and [name_f]Jane[/name_f]

[name_f]Edith[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] is really nice, but I agree that [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Edie[/name_f] are probably too close. I did know a [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] nn Dithy but it was a hard nn (everyone was always asking her how to spelling and saying “ditzy” or something instead). [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Meredith[/name_u] would be my first choice for you as it keeps the classic first name and this way both names can honor family. [name_f]Janie[/name_f] is a cute nn too.
