So I’m sitting home on maternity leave, due with this little guy pretty much any day, and even though we have his name all picked out, I can’t stop thinking about names. Not names for him, but for the next one. I can’t talk to my husband about it - he’d think I’m crazy! - so here I am back on Nameberry.
We now know we’re having a boy - the technician let it slip at my last appointment- and we’re 100% set on naming him [name]Philip[/name] [name]Rory[/name]. We love it and have no regrets or second thoughts, but I realized that it is the only name we love. And I started thinking, what if we have a third boy?!
What would you name a brother for [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name]? Obviously we don’t really need to worry about it yet, but I’m going crazy just sitting at home. Names are a nice distraction.
Also, I’d love your thoughts on our girls list:
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Gwen[/name]
[name]Helena[/name]
[name]Julia[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
What do you think of [name]Gwen[/name] on its own? [name]Do[/name] you prefer [name]Gwendolen[/name] nn [name]Gwen[/name]? Or can it stand on its own? Suggestions are also welcome!
Thanks! I know this is incredibly jumbled and long - blame it on the hormones!
I prefer [name]Gwen[/name] by itself. [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name], and [name]Stephen[/name] is what came to my mind. [name]Alice[/name] is my favorite of your girls names but I like them all.
As for [name]Gwen[/name], I think I prefer [name]Gwendolen[/name] or [name]Guinevere[/name], but I still think [name]Gwen[/name] can work on its own if that’s what you prefer.
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Malcolm[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Leopold[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Conrad[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Henry[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Simon[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]August[/name]
For girls:
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Helena[/name]- My fave!
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Gwendolyn[/name]
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Phillip[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name]
What would you name a brother for [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name]? ***I actually love it when parents think ahead. Sometimes ppl accidentally box themselves in and out of something they loved inadvertently by not thinking about it…
[name]Theodore[/name] [name]Milo[/name] and [name]Philip[/name] [name]Rory[/name] are truly fabulous together…I think your style is so clear it won’t be too hard to find a good match later
There are some obvious fits in the top 100 or so like [name]Henry[/name] or [name]Maxwell[/name] BUT I love that you stepped it up with [name]Philip[/name]. Fitting, not necessarily predictable. I’d do the same again.
[name]Alice[/name]- Good fit!
[name]Eliza[/name]- The [name]El[/name]- names are overdone esp. with such interesting brothers’ names.
[name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]- Great!
[name]Frances[/name]- I like it for you.
[name]Gwen[/name]- [name]Gwendolyn[/name] is more fitting in sibset. [name]Love[/name] [name]Gwen[/name]!
[name]Helena[/name]- [name]Lovely[/name] and fitting.
[name]Julia[/name]- Another great fit. Not quite as unexpected. Such a pretty name, though.
[name]Margaret[/name]- [name]Margo[/name] is fab with sibs.
[name]Mary[/name]- I love it in the mn position with your boy names- like [name]Gwendolyn[/name] [name]Mary[/name] or [name]Helena[/name] [name]Mary[/name] Good luck with #2!
[name]August[/name] - I love the nickname [name]Gus[/name]!
[name]Charles[/name]
[name]Frederic[/name] - but [name]Freddy[/name] wouldn’t work.
[name]George[/name]
[name]Henry[/name]
[name]Julian[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Thomas[/name]
Also, what do you think of [name]Peter[/name]? I love that it’s classic, timeless, and underused. I don’t like the nickname [name]Pete[/name], though, so I was thinking maybe [name]Piers[/name]? We would call him [name]Peter[/name] most of the time, just as we’re planning on mostly calling this baby [name]Philip[/name] with the occasional pet name [name]Pip[/name]. Thoughts on [name]Peter[/name] nn [name]Piers[/name]? I’m not sure how I feel about repeating initials. As preppy New Englanders, we like our monograms, and we do sometimes refer to [name]Teddy[/name] as T, which we obviously wouldn’t be able to do with a [name]Philip[/name] and a [name]Peter[/name]. But I’m not sure either is a big deal.
As for girls, I do love the name [name]Gwen[/name] but 1) my husband doesn’t share my enthusiasm, and 2) I don’t love the ‘full names’ as much. But I do love it!
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name] and [name]Gwendolen[/name]
([name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Gwen[/name])
Is it a mismatched sibset? Or do they go well together?
I’ve also been loving [name]Julia[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] lately. Maybe [name]Julia[/name] [name]Gwen[/name]? [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Fiona[/name]?
Which do you prefer?
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name] and [name]Julia[/name]
([name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name] and [name]Jules[/name])
Or
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name]
([name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name] and [name]Maggie[/name])
[name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Peter[/name]! I had an ex by this name–his first & middle = [name]Peter[/name] [name]Edward[/name], a combo I adore. We are still friends, and I NEVER call him [name]Pete[/name], ever. He was & always will be [name]Peter[/name] to me!!
By the way, my favorite of your girls names: [name]Mary[/name].
We have our own darling 2-year-old [name]Peter[/name] [name]Edward[/name]! He’s never been called [name]Pete[/name] as I also dislike this particular nn. I love the nn idea of [name]Pip[/name] for [name]Philip[/name]. I’ve always adored [name]Philip[/name] but been hesitant about [name]Phil[/name]. Mind you I’m now convinced it is possible to avoid nn’s. We have a [name]Henry[/name] and a [name]Peter[/name] and have considered in the past [name]Theodore[/name] (nn [name]Theo[/name]), [name]James[/name], [name]Thomas[/name], [name]Walter[/name] (nn [name]Walt[/name]), [name]George[/name]. I love many of your girl suggestions and think [name]Mary[/name] would be adorable. You could also use [name]Marian[/name] or [name]Meridith[/name] (nn [name]Mary[/name]).
@hiltzy - [name]Peter[/name] [name]Edward[/name] is a very handsome name! My son is two as well. It’s such a great age, isn’t it? Not terrible at all :).
On your list, [name]James[/name] got me thinking. We had originally nixed it when [name]Jane[/name] was our #1 girls name, but now that we no longer feel that we can use [name]Jane[/name], [name]James[/name] is a possibility again. [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name] and [name]James[/name]. I like it.
I’m not a huge [name]Peter[/name] fan, mainly because all the Peters I think of are middle aged bald guys. I know that most people don’t have that association, but it’s strong enough to turn me off the name. I also know a [name]Peter[/name] that’s about 17 or so and he gets called [name]Pete[/name] a fair bit. I don’t find [name]Piers[/name] to be intuitive at all. If you’re willing to stick with it, it may work, though.
All middle aged bald guys, huh? I don’t really know any Peters, though I guess I know of a few and they’re all twenty-something or older. But then again, [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name] probably conjure up similar images, so it’s not exactly a negative to us. In fact, we kind of like it. At least he (probably) won’t have 5 other Peters in his class, right?
I know [name]Piers[/name] may not be all that intuitive, but I think it would work. It’s no different than telling people our son [name]Theodore[/name] goes by [name]Teddy[/name], or that [name]Philip[/name]'s going to go by [name]Pip[/name], right? Sure, [name]Theodore[/name] nn [name]Teddy[/name] is a lot more common, but it’s not as intuitive as, say, [name]Theo[/name].
[name]Piers[/name] is definitely doable for [name]Peter[/name]! Now that you have mentioned it, I’ll be quick to start throwing it out there should [name]Pete[/name] ever raise his ugly head The charm of [name]Peter[/name] [name]Pan[/name], [name]Peter[/name] Rabbit and [name]Peter[/name] Cottontail really won us over. While we haven’t received many compliments on [name]Peter[/name]'s name I love it more and more each day! This name simply suits our blonde-headed, “all-boy” bundle of energy just perfectly!
