Naming vehicles

So, we have the idiosyncratic family tradition of naming vehicles. We name our own vehicles and even a few lucky friends’ vehicles. I guess I am guilty of starting this bit of folly as a child. One friend even went to far as to emblazon the name we gave his vehicle onto custom windshield decals. Not every vehicle gets a name; just the ones that seem to exude personality. They may be named for their color, look, or over-all “feel.” Examples: [name_f]Carla[/name_f]-[name_u]Jean[/name_u] was my brother’s robin’s egg-blue classic pickup truck; [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] (after EA [name_u]Poe[/name_u]) is a light-duty black pickup truck; Virginia was the ancient white sedan my parents’ drove when I was a child; [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] is my sister-in-law’s brand new gray Honda Civic; [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] was my older brother’s red and black [name_m]Diesel[/name_m] pickup, [name_f]Violet[/name_f] was my bff’s (wait for it) light purple car in college; [name_m]Jerome[/name_m], the ghetto car, was a beater driven by another good friend in college.
[name_m]Just[/name_m] curious… anyone else do this? Or are we just strange?

I have seen this done with classic cars mostly. [name_f]My[/name_f] dad had a red Plymouth named ‘[name_f]Betty[/name_f]’ when I was a kid. It reminded me of [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]'s ‘[name_f]Christine[/name_f].’

I do it. Absolutely everyone in my family does it. [name_f]My[/name_f] mum’s first car was named [name_f]Betsy[/name_f], then came [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_f]Paulette[/name_f], [name_f]Venus[/name_f] de [name_m]Milo[/name_m], [name_f]Francesca[/name_f] and Tiggy. Dad’s first (legal) car was named [name_f]Christine[/name_f] (after the SK book. We are big SK fan’s in my house. He’d had cars without his parent’s knowledge since he was 9 or 10, but his first registered one was [name_u]Christy[/name_u].), then came [name_f]Georgina[/name_f], Coyote, [name_f]Jane[/name_f], [name_u]Dominique[/name_u], [name_f]Happy[/name_f], [name_f]Honey[/name_f] and [name_m]Bear[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] first car (which I still have) was my nana’s old blue Mazda that she’d owned since the early '90’s. She christened it [name_f]Aiko[/name_f] (she was Japanese), and I call her [name_f]Nana[/name_f] [name_f]Aiko[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] granddad had REV at the beginning of his license plate, and someone mistook him to be a priest, so that car is forever known as Reverend.

I do. I currently have [name_m]Abel[/name_m] the [name_f]Sable[/name_f]. When I was in college, I had [name_m]Al[/name_m]. [name_m]Al[/name_m] was short for Alcatraz. The doors had a habit of getting stuck so sometimes once you got it, you couldn’t get back out!

We do this! as a child we had [name_m]Benny[/name_m] (Belmont), [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m] (Corsa), [name_m]Harry[/name_m] (Honda CR-V), [name_f]Jazzie[/name_f] (Honda [name_u]Jazz[/name_u]) and [name_m]Peter[/name_m] (Peugeot). [name_f]My[/name_f] personal cars have been [name_u]Philly[/name_u] ([name_m]Ford[/name_m] Fiesta) and [name_f]Clio[/name_f] the [name_f]Clio[/name_f]!

Only mine and my sisters cars have names to call their own. [name_f]My[/name_f] dear Pontiac Grand Prix is called Poncho, courtesy of my sisters friends from the days when she drove it. (It has belonged to everyone in my family and now is mine…now that’s the gas gauge doesn’t work, lol)

[name_f]My[/name_f] sisters red [name_m]Chevy[/name_m] Cruze is [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], she named it. I wanted to call it [name_u]Ruby[/name_u]. [name_f]My[/name_f] friend [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f] allowed me to name her soon-to-be inherited green [name_u]Explorer[/name_u], we settled on [name_u]Walker[/name_u] (named for her love of the deceased [name_m]Paul[/name_m] [name_u]Walker[/name_u].)

I think it’s fun to have a named car. Poncho is rather old, and doesn’t have the energy he used to, so when it’s struggling to get up a hill, I can pat the dashboard and be like “Come on, Ponch, you can do it!” It’s fun. [name_f]My[/name_f] sis does the same with “[name_f]Tilly[/name_f]”

Yeah, we’re weird.

We called a first car a clio _dun dun dunnnnn clio!! lol Our 1.6 2002 gold was named Hunny and our newest ( to us) car a 1995 golf gti in metallica purpley blue.,. We were thinking of calling her the tardis!! cos of the colour and get a sticker for the car saying she is time and relative distance in speed

[name_f]My[/name_f] mum had this car we named [name_f]Clara[/name_f] Clunk when I was little, and my dad always names his and his work trucks (he’s a truck driver). He had [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Raquel[/name_f] after [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] [name_u]Loren[/name_u] and [name_f]Raquel[/name_f] [name_m]Welch[/name_m], haha.

[name_f]My[/name_f] car is named [name_m]Zeke[/name_m]. His scenster name is [name_m]Zeke[/name_m] Zombie because he looks like he’s been through a zombie attack.

I’m still driving my first car (got it at age 26) and she is named [name_f]Svetlana[/name_f]. It was kind of an odd story: [name_f]My[/name_f] degree is in Russian Studies, so my roommate at the time wanted my car to have a Russian name. I basically gave her a list of names to choose from and I vetoed any that I didn’t like. She chose [name_f]Svetlana[/name_f], and for some reason it reminded me of the gymnast [name_f]Svetlana[/name_f] Khorkina, so that’s the name we went by. [name_u]Truth[/name_u] be told, I don’t actually use it very much, but I like knowing that my Corolla has a name.

I name my cars too. I have only owned three cars. [name_f]My[/name_f] first was a Jeep named Miss Piggy, my Hubby and I currently have a [name_m]Ford[/name_m] named [name_u]Connie[/name_u] and a [name_m]Dodge[/name_m] named [name_f]Debbie[/name_f].

It’s silly but…my future dream car is named Smurfette. It’s an electric blue [name_f]Mini[/name_f] [name_m]Cooper[/name_m] S with white hood, white side mirrors, white stripes on the hood…and I want to name it Smurfette, or maybe Papa Smurf.

I haven’t named my current car, she’s a Scion XA, super-reliable subcompact silver hatchback, with various scratches, dings, small rust spots. She’s like my “rebound” car because I wrecked my beloved sporty sedan. Now, I have to think about naming my car…

[name_f]My[/name_f] sister and I do this all the time. She has a white Fiat 500, so she chose an Italian name ([name_m]Lorenzo[/name_m]) for her car, for SUV’s/trucks we like stronger sounding names like [name_m]Axel[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] dad’s SUV’s licence plate had MAV on it so we call it [name_m]Maverick[/name_m]. We even name rental cars when we go on long vacations!

Yep, I do it. [name_f]My[/name_f] car is a black [name_m]Jac[/name_m] J3, who is very creatively named… [name_m]Black[/name_m] [name_m]Jack[/name_m]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mother’s old car was named [name_m]Tucky[/name_m], because it was a Hyundai [name_m]Tucson[/name_m]. We are not very creative when it comes to naming cars hehe

[name_f]My[/name_f] 1st car, a white Toyota Tercel, was named [name_f]Millie[/name_f] (she was new to me in the year 2000).

[name_f]My[/name_f] 2nd car, a white Toyota Corolla, was named [name_f]Tillie[/name_f] (she was a hand-me-down from my mother and she was just supposed to last [name_m]TILL[/name_m] I could afford something better–which ended up being almost a decade :))

[name_f]My[/name_f] 3rd car, a white Toyota Prius, is named [name_u]Gus[/name_u] (he doesn’t guzzle gas and he’s super cute and fun)

I don’t get to drive him as much as I’d like because my DH has a longer commute, so I drive DH’s Toyota Rav4. DH named him [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] (he had him before we met).

All my DH’s cars have been named after philosophers and thinkers he respects. [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] was after [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] Aquinas. His previous truck and car were [name_m]Socrates[/name_m] and [name_m]Aristotle[/name_m].

[name_f]My[/name_f] parents never named their current cars, though I know my mom said she called her first car something…I forget at the moment what.

I sometimes do it based on the license plate. [name_f]My[/name_f] parents’ previous car’s plate ended with FRB, so I called him Furbie. Their current car’s plate ends in DZE, so I call her Dizzy. Obviously, it only works with some plates. I don’t really understand giving them human names though, but to each their own. I hope when I get my own car, it has a good plate so I can name it something cool!

A good friend of mine has a jeep named [name_u]North[/name_u]-Runner

I thought I was the only one! I have a VW Beetle named [name_u]James[/name_u], weirdly it suits him.

I do! I named my first car Illinois, and named my sister’s car [name_f]Louisiana[/name_f]. And then my Mum felt left out that I hadn’t named her car, so I named it [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] just to tease her! :stuck_out_tongue:
After my lovely Illinois died, I named my big heavy red car [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]; because he was my chauffeur and [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] felt like a good chauffeur name. And just last year my DH and I bought [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] off my Mum… So now we have a car called [name_f]Bertha[/name_f] haha.

[name_f]My[/name_f] mom drove this ancient, hideous maroon car for the first 17 years of my life. We called it [name_f]Fanny[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] dad has had a couple civics, both called [name_u]Cobalt[/name_u].
