I am really starting to like [name]Naomi[/name]. However, why is it so widely mispronounced as Ni-oh-me, rather than Nay-oh-me, as it should be?
I know one called Nay-oh-mee no prn issues
I know a [name]Naomi[/name] and she doesnt have any issues.
A few personal theories: [name]Naomi[/name] Watts has been one of the more prominent recent bearers of the name, and as an Australian, I believe her accent renders it more as Nie-oh-me.
Two: both are in fact standard in English (as per behindthename.com). English does not have a lot of a - o sequences in words or names, so anything reasonable goes. I suspect at least in ancient Hebrew it was Nah-omi, different from either of these. I’m not sure how it’s pronounced in Hebrew currently.
I have known four [name]Naomi[/name]'s - one a cousin (older), one a colleague (30s), and two acquaintances (teenagers). I’m not sure if they found the prn difficult. I find myself going back and forth between the two and barely noticing. It’s one of my favorite names, and I go back and forth on which one I prefer.
I know a couple of girls named [name]Naomi[/name]. The variations in pronunciation are pretty similar anyway, so I think they just accept however people want to pronounce it (likewise, the [name]Nic[/name]-[name]OLE[/name] or [name]Nic[/name]-OHL thing. Most that I know just go by either).
I think the most common in [name]England[/name] is NAY-OH-me, but I’ve also heard [name]NYE[/name]-OH-me, NEE-OH-me and NAY-uh-me.
This isn’t helpful, but I just wanted to say I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Naomi[/name]! As well as [name]Noemi[/name]. Would use them if I could
I also like [name]Naomi[/name]. Never met one, but for me that’s a good thing because I associate certain names with people I know who already have that name.
As for mispronouncing it…it may depend on what part of the country you live. I live in the deep South and several months ago DH and I told father-in-law we might use [name]Naomi[/name] as a middle name. I pronounced it Nay-oh-me, but he tried to correct me and say it along the lines of KNEE-O-ME. I just dropped it because I didn’t want to seem rude. However, now I’m not sure if we should still use [name]Naomi[/name]…if father-in-law can’t even say it correct now…
I’m a [name]Naomi[/name]
idk why ppl say [name]Nye[/name]-o-me but most ask if it’s Nay or [name]Nye[/name]…hope that helps!
I know a [name]Naomi[/name] who pn it [name]Nye[/name]-oh-mee and no one ever pn it wrong from what I know, she was always called [name]Nye[/name]-oh-mee.
I think nye is the common American pn. I know it’s also a Japanese name.
I know a Naomi but she pronounces it NO-me instead. People always ask how its pronounced because really the name can be said a couple of different way. I think when she’s younger people will ask but as she gets older people will start to remember how its pronounced.
I am friends with a teenage [name]Naomi[/name]. She responds to both Nay-oh-me and [name]Nye[/name]-oh-mi, though [name]Nye[/name] is how she pronounces the beginning. [name]Both[/name] are close. Personally, I prefer the [name]Nye[/name] beginning, but it is a pretty name either way.
Names like [name]Naomi[/name] are challenging. I know a [name]Kiara[/name] who pronounces her name key-are-uh, but responds to key-air-uh as well. But, [name]Nye[/name] and Nay are so similar that, especially in American speech, it will blur together.
This was one of my Grandmother’s mn’s and now my cousins name, I don’t think there have been any prn issues, our family say “nay oh mee”
I know a [name]Naomi[/name] who pronounces it nye-oh-me but also responds to Nay-o-me! i personally like the nye sound myself! its a beautiful name i have thought of using it but too many pronounciations has put me off! i LOVED [name]Noemi[/name] too until i started saying it out loud and it sounded like saying No [name]Emmy[/name]!!! No [name]Emmy[/name]!
I pronounce it the way you do. I have heard people pronounce it [name]Nye[/name]-omi but I don’t prefer that.
I have never met anyone with the name. It is a pretty name. I also like the french [name]Noemie[/name] (can’t do the accent marks).
I know one british, pronounced nay-OH-mee (people usually say nie-oh-mee), one australian, nie-O-mee, one israeli NAH-oh-mee.
I knew a girl in school who’s little sister was named [name]Naomi[/name] and they pronounced it Nay-oh-mie.
I don’t really see any other pronounciations as MISpronounciations, just different.
I sort of feel like a lot of people make a big deal about giving their child a name that others won’t necessarily be able to pronounce correctly on first glance, the thing is, i don’t know a single person who’s never had to correct someone on the pronounciation of their name, even my friend [name]Anna[/name] had her name pronounced as [name]Ah[/name]-na once or twice.I have a name that’s commonly mispronounced by others, [name]Cassie[/name] gets pronounced as “[name]Casey[/name]” all the time. It’s not an issue or a big deal for me to correct someone on my name and i find that it’s a nice conversation piece occasionally. I usually make a joke about my parents giving me a nickname instead of a ‘real’ name. Back on point, I think that [name]Naomi[/name] is a beautiful name and that if you love it, you should use it, your daughter will find a way in the future to cope with people pronouncing it incorrectly and i’m sure she won’t ever find the name to be a burden.
I know one [name]Naomi[/name]. Everyone calls her Ni-o-me. I think it is the way she prefers it and it is very pretty.
