Hubby and I are narrowing down our middle names for [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. We each came up with 10 names we liked and narrowed them down from there; we didn’t come to a consensus. Now the hope is to come up with one list of five names that we can pick from.
I want to include names from both lists on the final list, but I am stuck; mostly because I hate almost all of his names and he only has strong feelings about a couple of mine. Can someone make suggestions for what my final five should be? Or make similar suggestions that sound better?
Well [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is lovely, great choice! It’s nice you’ve got the first name out of the way.
Hmmm about the middles - personally I see the shortness of [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and I especially love how it looks balanced with a longer middle. Out of your lists my favorites are:
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] - My favorite actually. I think these names look, sound, and feel stunning together. At once heavenly and blooming Positive association with [name_f]Florence[/name_f] Nightingale. Also an air of sophistication with the [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Italy[/name_f] connection.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - I think [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is the perfect classic compliment to [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. Gives this combo a feeling of elegance.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] - More daring than [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f].
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] - This combination has a nice flow - and it feels a little quirkier to me than the rest.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] - I love the simplicity. Sweet and classic.
@jadnf- thanks for your thoughts! [name_f]Florence[/name_f] is one from my hubby’s list that is actually nice, but what gives me reservations is that it’s not able to be shortened into anything I really like. If she grows up to hate [name_f]Luna[/name_f], I don’t want her to be stuck with such a formal name. Whereas with [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], there are so many cute diminutive names. Does that make sense? From your suggestions, I like [name_f]Grace[/name_f], but feel like it is so, SO common right now. I also like [name_f]Margot[/name_f], but hubby vetoed it. I also want to avoid names that start with C so she doesn’t have the name [name_f]Luna[/name_f] C. which sounds like lunacy.
@luneth- thanks for your suggestions as well. I agree that [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] sound the best and I think it has something to do with the longer classic names grounding [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I really like [name_f]Madeline[/name_f] and [name_u]Harper[/name_u] as well.
My favorites are [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. Personally I’d go with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], because I think it sounds the coolest
I’m not exactly sure how to recommend narrowing things down, but… For starters, although [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is a lovely name, I think there’s too many L sounds with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f]. I feel similarly about [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], but I think that combo works slightly better. I also would avoid [name_f]Marie[/name_f], which is such a commonly used middle name in comparison to all your other options. Otherwise, I think it’s a matter of what kind of image you want. Your husband’s names seem more classic and feminine, whereas some of yours seem more adventurous and kind of spunky. Maybe you could strike a balance between that, with [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], for example.
My favorite is definitely [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]–it’s gorgeous! [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is really nice too, with a great flow and balance. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] sound super badass to me. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] is fun and quirky. And [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] is elegant and timeless.
I wouldn’t worry about her disliking [name_f]Luna[/name_f], I think it’s a fantastic name! If you thought perhaps she would want a name that’s more common and formal sounding, for example if she decided to go into law/politics/a career that wouldn’t take her as seriously with a more out-there name, then I’d go for a more classic “simple” middle name, such as [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] (ps, I think the C does sound better than the K in this instance since it’s a softer sound than [name_f]Katherine[/name_f], don’t think the initial will be an issue…but if you want to avoid that [name_f]Florence[/name_f] also works)
@lily422- Weird question, is there a difference in the pronunciation of [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] and [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]? Or do you mean that [name_f]Luna[/name_f] C. sounds softer than [name_f]Luna[/name_f] K.? (This makes sense, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t missing something else.)
@stellarevolution- The differences in our styles are exactly the reason we’re having a hard time. I know that hubby would be fine with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f] or [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] from my list, but those are not my favorites. The reason I’m having SUCH a hard time liking his list at all is because of how formal most of them sound. I was given two classic names that sounded really formal together and while I could have used a nickname, my parents never wanted me to use one, so I always felt my name sounded kind of out of place because it was just so stuffy. Does that make sense? That’s why I’m automatically drawn to names that feel a little more laid back to me and also have the potential for nicknames (or at least most do.)
But I know that there HAS to be some names that I’m missing that could meet in the middle. I agree that [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] bridges the gap pretty well, but I don’t know if we could agree on it. Right now it feels like there is just no reconciling our styles (have no clue how we decided on [name_f]Luna[/name_f].)
My favorite from his list is [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] and from yours is [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u].
As for some of the others, I’m not a fan of the double L picks like [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] or [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Lorelai[/name_f] or the ones that both have a “uh” ending like [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Delia[/name_f] or [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. I think it just sounds too rhyme-y.
Some other pairings I like (mostly with names from my own list) that you guys might like too are:
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Rue[/name_u]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Sutton[/name_u]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Auden[/name_u]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Ember[/name_u]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
Hubby’s list:
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Isadore[/name_f] (drop the -a from [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] and I’m in love!!)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Louise[/name_f]/[name_f]Eloise[/name_f](I’m not a big fan of ends in -a first followed by ends in -a middle)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] (this might be my favorite–it’s one letter different from one of your top choices but doesn’t have the sing-song-iness of ends in -a [name_f]Amelia[/name_f])
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] (simple yet sophisticated and very satifying)
It was hard to narrow down to five! You both had such great middles to offer. Ultimately, for me, I eliminated [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], because they are colors/words and paired with the strong association of [name_f]Luna[/name_f] to [name_f]Moon[/name_f] it felt too wordy. [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] was sort of in that boat and sort of in [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]'s boat…just a little too buttoned-up for [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. On the flip-side, [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] and [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] seem just a tad too unbuttoned next to [name_f]Luna[/name_f]–if that makes any sense. [name_f]Frances[/name_f] and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] were closest to remaining on the list, just liked a couple others better. [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] is great, it just ends in -a. [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] is gorgeous but feels like too many 'L’s. [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] was eliminated for no particularly good reason…I just have a personal bais against it
I hope this was helpful. Obviously none of my suggestions were meant as edicts–just voicing a preference. Best of luck!
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] - it’s nice
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] - dislike the rhyming
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f] - nice
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Delia[/name_f] - sounds awkward out loud, reminds me of “memorabilia”
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Isadora[/name_f] - really pretty
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] - love it
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Prudence[/name_f] - too much rhyme
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - no, seems silly
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] - this is cool but eccentric
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f] - too trendy and insubstantial
My list:
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] - seems insubstantial
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f] - cool but [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] or [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] would be better
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] - [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] seems too heavy for [name_f]Luna[/name_f], which is light
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] - names run together, sounds like Loon [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] - pretty but trendy
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f] - seems like a character’s name
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] - pretty
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] - very pretty and I like the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] references
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Marie[/name_f] - [name_f]Marie[/name_f] seems too plain
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Hadley[/name_u] - cool
@ bb8- You made some interesting suggestions. I actually think you’re on to something with [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_m]Isadore[/name_m], unfortunately, my son’s first name is [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] and it would get a little mouthy, I’m afraid. Or is could just be that I like [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] so I automatically like [name_m]Isadore[/name_m].
I tend to favor the un-buttoned names as you put it; I definitely prefer more laid back names; though [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is the exception. It’s probably my favorite - it’s a family name, along with [name_f]Marie[/name_f].
And I agree with you on [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f]. I don’t like it in the least.
@ anyagreenwich- I’m going to bring up [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] to hubby. I think it flows well with our full name and she could use it later in life if she didn’t like [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] and [name_f]Coraline[/name_f], but don’t want to give her “C” as middle initial; she would be “lunacy.”
Hubby has been referring to baby as [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] (I made a very convincing argument for [name_f]Katherine[/name_f]) but we have also added [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] to the roster (his picks). It looks like the final five will be:
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] (my pick)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f] (my pick - hubby likes it)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u] (my pick - hubby doesn’t like names together)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] (hubby’s pick - I don’t like [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] with our last name)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] (hubby’s pick - it’s just…ok.)
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Bea[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u], and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Valentina[/name_f] are so pretty! [name_f]Adore[/name_f] all three…
