Narrowing Down Our List for Baby Girl (Continued)

I’m opening a new thread! I somehow managed to close the last one (Galahad loves my laptop, her paw must have hit something!). I’ve checked what you guys said, so I’ve deleted some names… and added some!

I’m going to bug you in here as well: This is our new list! We need help to narrow our list down to five, if you would be so kind. [name]Say[/name] whatever you want, make a top five, choose your favourite, pick out the names you think it would be beyond cruel to name a child, etc. We just need help (and who could possibly be better than you?)! Last name is one syllable, ends in -s. We still want a name that evokes images of deep old forests, starry skies and rivers, lakes and waterfalls.

Also, a BIG thank you to everyone who helped us on our last thread, you are angels!

[name]Alcyone[/name] al-[name]SI[/name]-uh-nee
Belphoebe
[name]Callisto[/name]
Cyrene - si-[name]REE[/name]-nee
[name]Eudora[/name]
[name]Eurydice[/name] - yoo-RI-duh-see (Eurynome?)
Illyria
Lorien
Luthien
[name]Nephele[/name] - NEF-eh-lee
Nimue or Niniane - nin-i-[name]AH[/name]-nuh
[name]Nyx[/name]
[name]Tempest[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name]
[name]Vesper[/name] or Hespera

We don’t really need middle name help until we have a top 5, but if it helps you, or if you want to, these are our options (we’re doing two middles):
[name]Arianwen[/name], [name]Azure[/name], [name]Bliss[/name], [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Celeste[/name], [name]Constance[/name], [name]Dione[/name], Earendil, Eirlys, [name]Eos[/name], Everild, Fairlight, Fiametta, [name]Garland[/name], Idunn/[name]Idony[/name], Illyria, [name]Ivy[/name], Iynx, [name]Joy[/name], [name]Lexie[/name], Lively, Loveday, [name]Louise[/name], Luthien, [name]Lux[/name], [name]Melusine[/name], Mielikki, Mist, Moonbeam, Mythily, [name]Nerida[/name], [name]Pandora[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], Polymnia, [name]Ren[/name], [name]Silver[/name], [name]Snow[/name], [name]Starling[/name], [name]Tempest[/name], [name]Tigerlily[/name], [name]Trix[/name], Valkyrie, Villanelle, Waterlily, [name]Waverly[/name], [name]Willow[/name], [name]Winter[/name], Wonderly

original thread here: Nameberry - Welcome to the Nameberry Forums

Your list makes me so happy – gorgeous and whimsical. My favorite is Belphoebe.

My top 5:

Belphoebe – sweet, lovely literary namesake.
Cyrene - si-[name]REE[/name]-nee – cute
[name]Eurydice[/name] - yoo-RI-duh-see – the most daring, but a distinguished choice!
Niniane - nin-i-[name]AH[/name]-nuh – love this
[name]Thalia[/name] – gorgeous

[name]Alcyone[/name]- Not easy to spell or pronounce. I don’t see the appeal.
Belphoebe- I prefer just [name]Phoebe[/name], this reminds me of [name]Bellatrix[/name].
[name]Callisto[/name]- I would prefer [name]Callista[/name], but this is okay. There is the nickname [name]Callie[/name].
Cyrene- Reminds me of Siren. I would go with [name]Serena[/name] instead.
[name]Eudora[/name]- Okay…very grandma-y to me. I like [name]Isadora[/name] better.
[name]Eurydice[/name] - Sounds a little too…ancient…for me. No one would know how to pronounce this.
Illyria- Okay…but there is the unfortunate nickname “Illy”.
Lorien- [name]Just[/name] looks like a tryndee spelling of [name]Lauren[/name]…
Luthien- I would definitely think this was a boy. Reminds me of [name]Luther[/name].
[name]Nephele[/name] - All I see is Nephew. I also would have NO idea how to pronounce this at first glance.
Nimue or Niniane - Niniane is a bit of a tongue twister. What about [name]Viviana[/name]? I just don’t see the appeal of Nimue (it’s pronounced [name]NIM[/name]-you, right?)
[name]Nyx[/name]- It just sounds like “nix” to me.
[name]Tempest[/name]- I think this would be a bit cruel to name a child just because of its meaning. Also sounds stripper-esque to me.
[name]Thalia[/name]- clearly the most usable out of your list. beautiful <3
Vesper or Hespera- I like Vesper, but I prefer Helena to Hespera.

Sorry I’m so negative! I’m much more mainstream then you are I guess. But I hope I was able to help.

My faves of your list are Thalia and Vesper.

My Top 5:

Belphoebe
Illyria
[name]Nephele[/name]
Niniane
Hespera

Cyrene
[name]Eurydice[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name]
[name]Tempest[/name]
[name]Vesper[/name]

Those are my favorites, the ones I would actually use myself. Great list!

If [name]Callisto[/name] was [name]Callista[/name], it would be perfect. That o ending gives a masculine feel to it. I also like [name]Tempest[/name] and [name]Thalia[/name].

Top Five:

[name]Eudora[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name]
[name]Callisto[/name]
Belphoebe

My favorites on your list are [name]Eurydice[/name] & [name]Nephele[/name]. [name]Vesper[/name] a close third and [name]Thalia[/name] not far behind. In your middles…I’ve adored Villanelle since reading [name]Jeanette[/name] Winterson’s The Passion. Gorgeous name and fantastic character.

Now just combo playing…
[name]Eurydice[/name] [name]Constance[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name] [name]Starling[/name] [name]Snow[/name]
[name]Eurydice[/name] Fairlight [name]Joy[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name] Villanelle [name]Snow[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name] Wonderly [name]Snow[/name]
[name]Eurydice[/name] [name]Tempest[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]
[name]Vesper[/name] [name]Calliope[/name] [name]Bliss[/name]
[name]Vesper[/name] Loveday [name]Louise[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name] [name]Pandora[/name] [name]Snow[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name] Villanelle Mist
[name]Vesper[/name] Earendil [name]Lux[/name]

Top five:
[name]Thalia[/name]
Nimue - this reminds me of Minou, very sweet.
Belphoebe
[name]Nephele[/name]
Illyria/Lorien

Bottom five with reasons:
[name]Callisto[/name]- I think it will be confused for [name]Callista[/name] or [name]Calypso[/name] fall too often
[name]Eurydice[/name] - this just has a yucky sound to me. Reminds me of [name]Eunice[/name], Unic, Urine? I’m sorry, I just don’t like it.
[name]Nyx[/name] - too short as a first though I would like it in the middle, people may think you’re referencing stevie nicks?
Cyrene - I feel like this will have so many pronunciation problems, [name]Even[/name] knowing how it’s supposed to be said, I still want it to rhyme with [name]Irene[/name].
Niniane - I think it’s the ninny beginning that is turning me off, but it is beautiful when written.

Indifferent five
[name]Alcyone[/name] al-[name]SI[/name]-uh-nee - this looks beautiful when written but I think you’ll have lots of prn problems, but if you’re okay with that, go for it.
[name]Eudora[/name] - I don’t like the Eu but I love the dora.
Luthien - does remind me a bit of [name]Luther[/name], mostly because of how it looks
[name]Tempest[/name] - I like it, just more in the middle
[name]Vesper[/name] or Hespera - ditto with [name]Tempest[/name]

more combos:
[name]Thalia[/name] [name]Starling[/name] [name]Tempest[/name]
[name]Thalia[/name] Eirlys Villanelle
[name]Thalia[/name] [name]Eowyn[/name] Fiametta (I see you too [name]Eowyn[/name] out! I love it still)
Nimue [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Snow[/name]
Nimue Lively [name]Starling[/name]
Nimue [name]Nerida[/name] [name]Celeste[/name]
Belphoebe [name]Arianwen[/name] Wonderly
Belphoebe [name]Pandora[/name] [name]Celeste[/name]
Belphoebe Valkyrie Iynx
[name]Nephele[/name] Polymnia [name]Ren[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name] [name]Tempest[/name] [name]Bliss[/name]
[name]Nephele[/name] Earendil Fairlight
Lorien [name]Constance[/name] [name]Snow[/name]
Lorien [name]Silver[/name] [name]Ivy[/name]
Lorien [name]Tempest[/name] Everild
Illyria [name]Tempest[/name] [name]Snow[/name]
Illyria [name]Persephone[/name] [name]Celeste[/name]
Illyria [name]Starling[/name] [name]Joy[/name]

My top 5 from this list:
[name]Thalia[/name]- I think this is easily the most wearable of your names. It’s easy to say and spell and has a familiar sound, though it’s not a common name. You might also like [name]Thais[/name].
Illyria- I just think this is beautiful!
Lorien- Sounds like a lot of more common names ([name]Lauren[/name], [name]Laura[/name], [name]Dorian[/name]) but a little bit different. I think it’s a good fitting in/ standing out name.
[name]Nephele[/name]- Though I think getting people to use the right pronunciation would be a nightmare. It is a great name, though.
[name]Eudora[/name]- Like Lorien, it sounds like a lot of names- [name]Cora[/name], [name]Dora[/name], [name]Annora[/name]- but is just a little bit different. I think that’s a really good thing!

I would advise against [name]Nyx[/name]. Its similarity to nix, “nothing,” is just too much. If you absolutely love it, maybe use it as a nickname for [name]Nicolette[/name] or [name]Danica[/name] or something.

Top 3:
Nephele-Love this
Thalia
Callisto (although I prefer Callista)

What I LOVE about your list is that it all felt very magical!

The ones I really like:
[name]Thalia[/name]- assume you’re using the ‘th’ pronunciation for this one (rather than as a homonym for [name]Talia[/name])? [name]Love[/name] this, though it is probably the most widely-used of your options on paper.
[name]Vesper[/name] or Hespera- ooh, I think [name]Vesper[/name] still gets my vote here, but Hespera is lovely too. Reminds me of [name]Hester[/name], which I love and I think is unfairly maligned.
Belphoebe- certainly lovely and usuable, could get annoying (‘no, not [name]Phoebe[/name], BELphoebe!’)
[name]Callisto[/name]- Growing on me. All of the nickname options are appealing, too.
Illyria- The Ill- is throwing me for a loop, along with my unfair and irrational dislike of Twelfth [name]Night[/name]. Setting that aside, it is a pretty cool name.
Lorien- pretty, but seems a little more mainstream than it is thanks to the popularity of [name]Lauren[/name]. Would you be at all tempted to do this http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog.com/media/2012/10/00-delorean-stroller-opt.jpg for her first Halloween costume? :stuck_out_tongue:
Luthien- the more I see it on your list, the more I like it.

[name]Don[/name]'t like so much:
[name]Alcyone[/name] al-[name]SI[/name]-uh-nee- eh- still seems like a fussier version of [name]Halcyon[/name].
Cyrene - si-[name]REE[/name]-nee - seems like an odd choice, am I missing something other than the biblical place name? [name]Eirene[/name] seems more your style!
[name]Eudora[/name]- ancient and clunky email client? Disney-esque witch? I don’t know where I’m getting the latter reference from, but it is firmly in my mind, and is just wrecking how I want to see this name (which is not as a sparkly green-nosed witch crossed with some tech business).
[name]Eurydice[/name] - yoo-RI-duh-see (Eurynome?)- Eurynome might work better: fewer operas, graphic novels, and raised eyebrows for her to deal with. Same pronunciation problems, but I guess she’ll always know at a first meeting whether or not someone has had a classical education?
[name]Nephele[/name] - NEF-eh-lee - I think I hesitate with this one primarily because I inevitably shorten or play with names, and here I would end up using ‘Neff’ or ‘Feely’, neither of which seems like a desirable nickname.
Nimue or Niniane - nin-i-[name]AH[/name]-nuh- or maybe I just don’t like N-names?
[name]Nyx[/name]- the personification of night, and the mother of death and sleep? I might adopt this name on my own if I wanted a gothic persona for a band or in a TRPG, but I’m not sure I would forgive my parents for naming me this. Excellent name for a pet, though.
[name]Tempest[/name]- I guess it’s used, and I’ve already explained why I don’t think I’d appreciate having this as my name-- but I do prefer [name]Tempest[/name] to [name]Nyx[/name] on a human.

Hmm, those last two are on the harsh side, but I really do like you names and [name]LOVE[/name] that you are going out on a limb with them and doing it with such care. I’ve let this sit here for a moment before posting just to be sure, but I am going to post it, since when I get to that point I would want to know if someone were thinking that about the names I have on my shortlist. I hope that makes sense despite the grammar!

Edited to add that I do have a top three for you- Vesper, Luthien, and Callisto. I think they have both the striking creativity and the flexibility to be a good name for every day.

Callisto Loveday Blythe, Callisto Everild Snow, Callisto Nerida Joy
Luthien Pandora Celeste, Luthien Persephone Joy, Luthien Calliope Celeste
Vesper Idony Joy, Vesper Fiametta Eirlys, Vesper Blythe Luthien

Sorry my last post was so long! I tend to get a bit carried away, and don’t realize how much I’ve written until after I hit post >_> I’ll try to be more concise this time!

Cyrene and [name]Nephele[/name] are tied for my top pick. I prefer the sound of [name]Nephele[/name], but Cyrene’s meaning is just irresistible.
Illyria is next. So glad to see you’ve re-added this! I disagree with Illy as a nn, much preferring [name]Lyra[/name], which gives you the added bonus of the [name]Lyra[/name] Belacqua association from His Dark Materials

[name]Alcyone[/name], Belphoebe, [name]Callisto[/name], and [name]Eudora[/name] are still nos for me.

Vastly prefer Luthien to Lorien, Nimue (pronounced nim-oo-ay as far as I know) to Niniane, and Eurynome to [name]Eudora[/name]. I think I prefer [name]Eurydice[/name] to Eurynome, only because I can hear how easily Eurynome could sound like “your enemy.” I like [name]Vesper[/name] better than Hespera…the H gives it too much of a waspish sound. Still like Vespertine better than just [name]Vesper[/name].

On the fence about [name]Thalia[/name], [name]Tempest[/name], and [name]Nyx[/name]. I think the latter two make more sense for you as middles.

Loving the additions of [name]Blythe[/name], Eirlys, [name]Nerida[/name], [name]Starling[/name], [name]Trix[/name], and Wonderly! Bring back [name]Reverie[/name]!

Would still vote against: [name]Eos[/name], [name]Garland[/name], Idunn (although [name]Idony[/name] is not my favorite, it makes a decent alternative), [name]Lexie[/name], [name]Joy[/name], [name]Pandora[/name], Loveday, Lousie (what about variant [name]Aloisia[/name], or Lousine, meaning moon, instead?), [name]Lux[/name], Mielikki, and Moonbeam (what about Nuray “bright moon”, Rishima “moonbeam”, [name]Yue[/name] “beautiful like the moon”, Misae “white sun”, [name]Selenia[/name] “in the moonlight”, or Mahpari “moon fairy” instead?)

I thought of a couple more options for the middles:

Sylphide (a forest fairy, a spirit of the air in the alchemical tradition, and a spectacularly lovely ballet)
Tinuviel (the epithet of Luthien, and perhaps more usable-- close to Tintagel. Means “daughter of the starry twilight” in Elvish)
Wildwood
Evenstar
Clearwater (a surname, and a beautiful forest here in the US)
Evenwood (a forest in Northwest [name]England[/name])
Mithrin (the adjective ‘silver’ in LOTR, as opposed to mithril, the noun ‘silver’)
Silverlode (the river down which the fellowship of the ring travelled-- ran through Lothlorien)

Boys names are definitely my thing so I’m probably going to hang out on that thread much more often, lol, but I will give these a shot! My Top 5 list in a non-permant order because I honestly can’t decide which ones are the absolute favorites for me. =]

  1. [name]Alcyone[/name]: I still really love this one, mostly because of the myth but you’ll also get the star association, which is never a bad thing. I love the pretty sea-green image she has in my mind and her connection to [name]Artemis[/name] (my favorite, hence the [name]Orion[/name] obsession…). The kingfisher offers a strong nature connection and their wings contain many of the colors you aim for. Downside, it’s one of the more difficult names to spell. And this is neither here nor there, but [name]Alcyone[/name] also sounds a little bit like ‘abalone’ so I that might also be why I tend to get such a vivid mental picture of cool kaleidoscopic colors (the inside of their lustrous shells are often used to make jewelry).

  2. Lorien: This is my [name]Orion[/name]. My absolute favorite choice sound-wise and Tolkein-wise lol. Then again, it is also the most similar to [name]Orion[/name] (and [name]Endymion[/name], etc.) so it would definitely limit your boys’ list choices in the future. Would you consider moving it back to the middle spot? I can see it fitting in quite perfectly with something like [name]Nephele[/name] Lorien [name]Starling[/name]. Which brings me to…

  3. [name]Nephele[/name]: Incredibly super cute name! It’s pronunciation is remniscent of something like [name]Stephanie[/name], and therefore I think it could be very wearable for a little girl today. Also since it is so unlike most of your boys’ choices you would never have to worry about it ending up being part of a too “matchy” sibset. I know you pretty much love all of the nymphs, and the possible centaur aspect of her myth is pretty awesome to me, but the rest of it is also kind of depressing and anti-climactic, no? She cried a lot… lol.

  4. [name]Euridice[/name]. Actually, [name]Eudora[/name] and [name]Euridice[/name] are pretty much tied for me. They both start with the same lovely sound, and I can’t seem to choose based on that alone. [name]Eudora[/name] Welty is Fantastic but then again, the internet ruins all of the best names and there is some kind of e-mail software called [name]Eudora[/name] which is a bit of a shame. The myth of [name]Orpheus[/name] and [name]Euridice[/name] is definitely one of my favorites (and it’s an opera as well) so that gives her an edge, especially if you are deciding that you’ll take [name]Orpheus[/name] off of the boys list.

  5. [name]Callisto[/name]. I like this for the reason that most berries don’t. I think [name]Callista[/name] is so well-known as a name that people will find this very easy to remember, at least after only one correction. It is also one of the easiest to spell… I like it, just not sure that I love it. Maybe a compromise would be to choose something else as a first and use the similar choice of [name]Calliope[/name] in the middle name spot?

I won’t do middle names yet, but I love the new suggestions of Fairlight and [name]Starling[/name] sooo much! I was also thinking the other day that my previous favorite mn choice Fiametta, though adorable, might be better off saved for a firey younger sister who’s name would possibly not incorporate all of this same serene, watery imagery. Good luck! =]

[name]Alcyone[/name] al-[name]SI[/name]-uh-nee - I’ve always thought it was al-cee-OH-nee, and I’m not a fan of al-[name]SI[/name]-uh-nee
Belphoebe - [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] and would use in two seconds flat if my last name didn’t start with J
[name]Callisto[/name] - not a fan of the O ending
Cyrene - si-[name]REE[/name]-nee - prefer [name]Cybele[/name]
[name]Eudora[/name] - seems too old lady
[name]Eurydice[/name] - yoo-RI-duh-see (Eurynome?) lol my husband’s gamer name on Xbox is Eurynome and he swears it’s the name of a devil prince, even though I showed him the info for Eurynome as a girl’s name.
Illyria - I like it
Lorien - not my style, seems masculine in appearance
Luthien - same as Lorien
[name]Nephele[/name] - NEF-eh-lee it’s cute
Nimue or Niniane - nin-i-[name]AH[/name]-nuh - [name]LOVE[/name] Nimue
[name]Nyx[/name] - cute
[name]Tempest[/name] - I like this in theory
[name]Thalia[/name] - very pretty
[name]Vesper[/name] or Hespera - much prefer [name]Vesper[/name]

So, top 5
Belphoebe
Nimue
[name]Vesper[/name]
Illyria
[name]Thalia[/name]

It is a bit contradictory to the serene, watery imagery you are looking for this time around… but could be saved for a firey younger sister who’s name would not necessarily follow the same path as these, and could be focused around a different kind of bright magical feeling. (I know, unrelated) Good luck! =]

  1. [name]Thalia[/name]

Would you consider moving it back to the middle spot? I can see it fitting in quite perfectly with something like [name]Nephele[/name] Lorien [name]Starling[/name]. Which brings me to…

I like [name]Eudora[/name] and [name]Vesper[/name], which seem quite different to me, one words, one music. [name]Vesper[/name] [name]Blythe[/name]?

[name]Nyx[/name]; when I see the Ny, I automatically think of nympho, maybe it’s the combo of the Ny and the x, so I’m not a big fan of that one.
