edited to add age
Hey everyone! Hopefully this is the right forum for this. I debated posting in Everything But Names, but this does have to do with names, so I put it here instead. If this is the wrong place, please let me know so I can do it right next time.
I’m an 18 year old transguy (born female, but transitioning to male), and I’m working on picking a new legal first name for myself. I’ve asked my parents what they would have named me, and while I’m going to use the middle name they would have given me ([name_m]Edward[/name_m]), I’m not exactly fond of the first names they would have chosen ([name_u]Conner[/name_u] or [name_m]Allen[/name_m]). Nothing against them, just not my preference. My parents are involved though, and they’ve helped me form the list I have now to an extent, it’s just narrowing it down that’s a problem.
Over the past few weeks since I came out to them, I’ve gotten my list down to 7 names. None of them have any particular dramatic significance to me, these are just the ones that I’ve felt the most attached to through the process of searching. So if you all could give me opinions (opinions just on the names and not on my transition process, please) or even suggestions if you have them, I would really appreciate it!
My favorites are [name_u]Kieran[/name_u], [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] & [name_u]Micah[/name_u]. I love all three is those because they are unique, not too popular but not too out there, and are strong and handsome without “trying too hard”. [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] is a bit too popular for me but a really nice name too. My least favorites are [name_m]Cole[/name_m] & [name_m]Greyson[/name_m].
You do have a nice list and my favourites on it are [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_u]Kieran[/name_u]. I would suggest checking on the popularity of the name in the year you were born because I think it would be more wearable if it was used during that time period. I don’t know for sure but a name like [name_u]Aidan[/name_u] got really popular about ten years ago and upon hearing the name, many people probably would assume that you are under the age of 20 and I’m not sure that that’s what you’re going for.
Thank you everyone for your help so far! @ whitegardenia, I don’t mind being viewed under the age of 20, because I’m 18 right now, but you make a good point about the age probably sticking for a while.
In order of my preference, favorite to least-favorite. None of them are bad.
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] - been a favorite of mine since [name_m]WAY[/name_m] before it was popular…10ish years? I hear it as strong, sophisticated, and nature-y because it relates to lakes.
[name_u]Micah[/name_u] - a mineral, a prophet, and a different “[name_m]Mike[/name_m]” name than classic [name_u]Michael[/name_u]. [name_u]Love[/name_u] it.
[name_m]Nolan[/name_m] - easy to spell and say, tasteful, and not invented.
[name_m]Cole[/name_m] - I like [name_m]Cole[/name_m]! Short, easy to spell, normal but not overly popular.
[name_m]Greyson[/name_m] - an old favorite of mine. [name_u]Grey[/name_u] is one of my favorite colors! [name_m]Greyson[/name_m] is soft and could be unisex, but the “son” ending makes it decidedly more masculine.
[name_u]Kieran[/name_u] - I like this name, but it’s literally [name_f]Kiera[/name_f] with an “n” which gives it a touch of that invented vibe.
[name_u]Aiden[/name_u] - feels very 2005-8 to me. In a vacuum I would like it because it has a nice sound, but it’s too popular for my taste.
