Natalie and Elodie?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Everyone,

I am pregnant with my second girl. Big sister is named [name_f]Natalie[/name_f], and I really love the name [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], with my only reservation being whether it sounds strange with her sister’s name. Are “[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]” too similar or rhyme-y? [name_f]Do[/name_f] they sound strange together?

We typically use [name_f]Natalie[/name_f]'s full name (though call her [name_m]Natty[/name_m] once in awhile) and though I love the nicknames [name_f]Elle[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] for [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], I can’t say for certain we won’t just end up using the full name more often.

[name_f]Elodie[/name_f] has been the only name I truly loved for this baby the way I loved [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] for my first, but I am starting to second guess my love for [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], partially because of my concern about how it sounds with [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and partially because almost everyone I’ve discussed it with does not like the name (reactions ranging from “not my favorite” to “yuck.”).

[name_u]Baby[/name_u] will likely be here in less than a month and I am feeling very unsettled without having the name “finalized” in my head - please let me know your thoughts! Thanks!

It’s a little close for me, personally, but it’s not super bad. How about [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]? That’s a beautiful alternative. [name_u]Or[/name_u] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]?

The fact they have the same ending would bug me, however, if you feel like this is THE name, I say use it! How siblings names sound together isn’t everything.

And I absolutely adore [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], btw!

I say go with naming her [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom had a [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] who went by [name_f]Katie[/name_f] only and then [name_u]Julie[/name_u]. I never saw it as rhyming, especially since -ee sound endings are common.

I think it’s a sweet sibling set and you don’t want to regret not using the name you love!

I think [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] are such pretty names on their own and work together just fine.

I hope you choose [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], the name you love! The first sounds are so different that I don’t think the similar ending matters much. For what it’s worth, I think [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] is beautiful.

Na / [name_f]El[/name_f]
Ta / O
[name_u]Lee[/name_u] / [name_f]Dee[/name_f]

Just for fun I broke up how each syllable sounds and overall I think they are still each their own distinctive name. I can think of lots of sisters with names like [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] and [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] etc that also have similar endings.

Best of luck!

If you love it then you should you use it. Yeah the endings are similar but not enough for it to cause any problems

They are a little sing-song-y together, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The more I say them together in my head, the more I think they work well together. And besides, if [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] is the name you love, that’s the name you should use!

I actually really like [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] together it feels like a very chic sibset

Natalie and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] are sweet together-I don’t think they sound too similar. [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] is a favourite of mine

If you love it, they work! I’d personally avoid it because of the similar rhythms they have, but there’s no reason why you can’t

If you truly love this name for your daughter and you think it’s her name, I say go for it!
The matching ‘-ie’ feels a little matchy, but honestly, they feel different enough to work together! Maybe that’s because one is like ‘-[name_u]Lee[/name_u]’ and the other is ‘-[name_f]Dee[/name_f]’, or maybe it’s just because the beginning of each name is quite different from the other… Point is, I don’t think they are too close for sisters at all!

Elodie is one of my favourite names, it’s beautiful and has a pretty lyrical sound. I hope you don’t listen to the criticism!

I think it’s fine.

I really love them together! They do sound similiar, but one ends on -lee and one ends with -dee, so I think there is just enough difference between them. They aren’t too matchy matchy.

Thanks everyone for your input! You’ve made me feel better about the combo - even if it’s a little rhymey, if [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] is still the name I like best when the baby comes, I should probably just go with it.

Elodie is so lovely! :yellow_heart: Sweet and happy-sounding but with plenty of strength. I do think [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] share a fair bit of sound, but depending on your perspective, that could just be something that links them together nicely. [name_f]My[/name_f] personal preference is for sibling names to be pretty distinct from each other, but ultimately I think it matters a lot more that you love the individual names. It sounds like [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] is the name that makes your heart happy, so I say go for it!

I think the beginning is different enough that it would be fine.

You could also do
Natalia and Elodie
Natasha and Elodie
Natalie and Eloise
Natalie and Elowen
Natalie and Elora
Natalie and Elide
Natalene (Na-ta-Leen) and Elodie

I thought of some more

[name_f]Nadia[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodia[/name_f]
Nalia and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
Natalyn and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]
[name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and Elodyn

But I do think [name_f]Natalie[/name_f] and [name_f]Elodie[/name_f] is fine, since it is [name_u]Lee[/name_u] and [name_f]Dee[/name_f]

I think you should definitely use [name_f]Elodie[/name_f]. It’s a fantastic name with its own unique history and if the ending sound is the only thing to link it with her sister’s name then so be it. I’m of the general thought that matchy names aren’t a bad thing so long as each name is distinctive enough on its own especially when shortened, which will naturally happen at some point in their lives.
