Nathaniel?

Damn, ever since joining this site my naming hobby has skyrocketed with no sight of land anytime soon. My partner is okay with this, I think he has broadened his mind when it comes to naming as well.

So here comes my question…

When we were expecting [name]Susannah[/name], the boy names we came up with if she was a boy were [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Sebastien[/name]. I don’t think if we had a boy next we would call him [name]Sebastien[/name], mainly because he would share the same first initial as [name]Susannah[/name] and we’re not loving it as much as we did before the birth.

Yet [name]Nathaniel[/name] is still going strong, except when it comes to the nickname.

We know our friends and family will shorten it, and so will we. My partner [name]Etienne[/name] goes by Et, I’m an [name]Olivia[/name] and I sometimes go by [name]Liv[/name] or [name]Livie[/name] and everyone else in our family/friend circle has a nickname. [name]Susannah[/name] will go by her name, but we have called her [name]Susie[/name] and Sannah already.

Now when it comes to [name]Nathaniel[/name], we absolutely love the name-its soft, strong and oh so handsome. However we’re not really fond of the nickname [name]Nathan[/name], we’re ok with [name]Nate[/name] but we don’t love it.

Today I came across this site that offered potential nicknames and one of them was [name]Thaniel[/name] which is cute but got me thinking of [name]Thane[/name]. I suggested it to my partner and he really likes it which is great I must say.

So…[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Thane[/name] works with [name]Nathaniel[/name] or is it too much of a stretch?

Would love to hear your input!

I have the same problem with [name]Nathaniel[/name]. It’s so soft but all the traditional nicknames seem to take away from that. I settled on [name]Thaniel[/name] a while ago, which I love. I’ve never thought of [name]Thane[/name] before but it’s really cool. It is a bit of a stretch but I don’t tend to mind that with nicknames. If you establish [name]Thane[/name] as [name]Nathaniel[/name]'s nickname early on then I don’t think you should have too much of a problem.

Good luck

I think that a nickname can be anything that you want, personally I like nicknames to have a connection with a persona actual name. [name]Thane[/name] works just fine and it’s quite nice, although I can’t go past [name]Nate[/name] as a nickname for [name]Nathaniel[/name], it’s my big brother’s name.
I really like [name]Nathaniel[/name], timeless yet cool

I love [name]Nathaniel[/name]! My favorites for nn’s are [name]Nat[/name], [name]Nate[/name] and I do like [name]Thane[/name]! Or how about [name]Neil[/name]?

Thanks guys!

@kyemsma-I have an uncle [name]Neil[/name], so it wouldn’t work but thanks for the suggestion.

[name]Susannah[/name] is one of my favorite girls’ names and I love [name]Nathaniel[/name] too – it’s my daughter’s boyfriend’s name so I hear it a lot and every time I hear it, I think how much I like it! It’s a great brother name for [name]Susannah[/name], too.

The only problem the [name]Nathaniel[/name] I know well has is, yes, with nicknames. A lot of his friends call him [name]Nathan[/name], which is really a separate name and to me so much less appealing than [name]Nathaniel[/name]. Some people call him [name]Nate[/name] which is ok but doesn’t fit him at all. I call him by his full name but I think he hears that as a bit formal.

[name]One[/name] friend of mine calls her son [name]Nathaniel[/name] [name]Natty[/name], which is cute and could certainly grow up to [name]Nat[/name].

[name]Thane[/name] or [name]Thaniel[/name] (or Than) is certainly creative. It’s one of those names you’d have to overexplain initially – [name]Shane[/name]? No, [name]Thane[/name]. [name]Dane[/name]? [name]Thane[/name], with a Th… but once people got it, they’d get it.

All that said, I think I prefer [name]Nat[/name]/[name]Natty[/name] because it bears more relationship to [name]Nathaniel[/name].

I don’t really “get” [name]Thane[/name] because I’m imagining it said with a hard rhymes with [name]Dane[/name] and [name]Cain[/name] sound in it, and [name]Nathaniel[/name] doesn’t have that sound in it.

[name]Thaniel[/name] I would imagine as more of a thahn-yel sound like [name]Nathaniel[/name] itself has.

I definitely think [name]Thane[/name] works! Why not?

I think [name]Nat[/name] or [name]Niel[/name] (or even [name]Niall[/name]…) could work as nns for [name]Nathaniel[/name], too.

I think [name]Thane[/name] would be fine. I’ve heard a lot crazier! There is also [name]Nat[/name]. By the way, I think [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Susannah[/name] are a beautiful name combo!

This is why I avoid the long names no matter how much I love them because I despise their shortened versions. I love [name]Johnathon[/name] and [name]Nathaniel[/name].

I think [name]Thane[/name] might work, but it would depend on your family too. Many will just go with the traditional [name]Nathan[/name]/[name]Nate[/name].

Wow, I love [name]Thane[/name] as a nn for [name]Nathaniel[/name]! I think it works brilliantly.

Wow, we have really similar tastes in names! [name]Susannah[/name] and [name]Nathaniel[/name] are the two names at the very top of my list (now if only my Dh’s list were the same as mine haha). I hear you on the nn issue. I am personally a fan of [name]Nate[/name] (NOT [name]Nathan[/name] - I see that as a separate name). I do think both [name]Thaniel[/name] and [name]Thane[/name] can work as nn’s, and actually like them quite a bit. I also think [name]Thaniel[/name] in particular maintains a lot of the original name which I like.

I say go for [name]Nathaniel[/name] and whether nn’s are [name]Nate[/name], [name]Thaniel[/name], or [name]Thane[/name], you’ve got a great name picked out.

[name]Thane[/name] definitely works with [name]Nathaniel[/name]. [name]Love[/name] [name]Nathaniel[/name]. It goes so well with [name]Susannah[/name].

Thanks guys, I love your feedback. [name]Thaniel[/name], [name]Thane[/name], [name]Nate[/name] it is! I don’t think we will use [name]Nat[/name] or [name]Natty[/name] although very cute, one of my close friends is named [name]Natalia[/name] and she goes by [name]Nat[/name] or [name]Natti[/name]. ^^ Oh, the dilemma.

Wait a few years and we might have a [name]Nathaniel[/name], but then we might have a new name by then as well.
