[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all,
[name_m]Just[/name_m] after some general advice and to get a feel for people’s opinions - does [name_m]Ned[/name_m] work as a nickname for [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]? Is it a bit of a stretch, or do you think it’s acceptable?
[name_m]Gideon[/name_m] has been top of our list for quite some time, we just feel like it’s a very big name to wear as a smaller child and possibly hard for other children to say. We have been racking our brains to come up with some nicknames that work for [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] besides Gid and [name_m]Deon[/name_m]. Any other suggestions would be great!
Thank you,
[name_f]Emily[/name_f] x
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], love [name_m]Ned[/name_m], great idea!
I know some advise oh no, that’s not an intuitive nn for a name. That seems very silly to me.
It’s definitely a stretch, but I think it works.
Thanks for the feedback! We agree it’s a bit of a stretch but really hoping we can make it work!
Looking forward to hearing some more opinions/ideas
What about [name_m]Ian[/name_m]?
We did consider [name_m]Ian[/name_m], but sadly we’re both not that big of a fan
[name_m]Ned[/name_m] is a great nn for [name_m]Gideon[/name_m]! What a great idea - and I much prefer it over other [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] nn ideas.
I don’t get the ‘it’s a stretch idea’. Nicknames can come from anywhere and don’t need to relate to the name at all, but Ned on the other hand uses some of the key letters in Gideon to form a quite natural nickname. And many traditionally popular nicknames have had less relation to the full name ie Jack for John, Dick for Richard, Bill for William, Jim for James, Peggy for Margaret, Polly for Mary, Nan for Anne etc. Don’t let people make you think there are any rules about nicknames, because there aren’t. If you think it works, it works!
It’s a stretch, but it works.
I find it a bit trying too hard, tbh, which I don’t usually, but equally I’d find it really cool to run across a [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] nicknamed [name_m]Ned[/name_m].
[name_m]Don[/name_m]
[name_m]Den[/name_m]
[name_m]Geo[/name_m] / [name_m]Gio[/name_m]

*I know someone who everyone calls Mr G ( his first name starts with a G) and it totally works! Could be a cool option for you.
Thanks for the feedback, guys
araminty - this is what I was thinking when I was trying to work out possible options! So many names have nicknames that barely relate, surely [name_m]Ned[/name_m] would work
I imagine at first most people will think it’s strange, as it’s just not the normal nickname for [name_m]Gideon[/name_m], but then again, [name_m]Gideon[/name_m] isn’t all that popular here, so hopefully people will just adapt and roll with it
