We are due in less than 2 months and are not settled on a boys name. Names we like are [name]Damien[/name], [name]Lucian[/name], [name]Reuben[/name], [name]Rolf[/name], [name]Desmond[/name] and [name]Oliver[/name]. But none of them fell right. We’ve decided on [name]Wren[/name] for a girl, which is a little different to our regular style and is nature inspired. Thought maybe we could try fining a similar boys name.
I’m looking for nature inspired names for boys. Not over the top hippy names (though I know this is a matter of opinion and it could be quite a fine line between nature inspired names and full blown hippyish names). I guess we are looking for a male version of [name]Wren[/name] - relatively simple, something the child could grow up with and would also be suitable for an adult. Also we are Australian so we’re not after American-specific nature names, in fact we would like Australian specific or just general nature names suggestions.
Or maybe not nature names but word names associated with nature. Names that mean [name]Earth[/name] for example. This site has already been a great resource but I still feel like we haven’t found the right name yet. So far I like the name [name]Rain[/name], but can’t use it as there is already a [name]Rain[/name] in the extended family. [name]Adam[/name] may also be an option. They baby is due late may/early june so here it will be late [name]Autumn[/name]/early [name]Winter[/name] here if that helps.
Here are some boys names inspired by nature…
[name]Forrest[/name]
[name]Hawthorne[/name]
[name]Banyan[/name]
[name]Cedar[/name]
[name]Hale[/name]
[name]Flint[/name]
[name]Sage[/name]
[name]Orion[/name]
[name]Ocean[/name]
[name]Frost[/name]
[name]North[/name]
[name]Rowan[/name]
[name]Oliver[/name]
[name]Finch[/name]
[name]Robin[/name]
[name]Linden[/name]
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name] (too popular in Australia?)
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Slate[/name]
I agree [name]Oliver[/name] actually is a nature name, alluding to [name]Olive[/name]. There are some other good suggestions. Let me add a few that occurred to me/I found on the internet. All best!
Somehow [name]Joachim[/name]/[name]Joaquin[/name] comes to mind: the San [name]Joaquin[/name] valley is a beautiful place. Not exactly a nature name, but on that track. Maybe it comes to mind because it starts with a w sound even though spelled J, sort of like [name]Wren[/name] has the silent w. [name]Do[/name] you have any favorite outdoorsy places with plausible names for first names? [name]Ewan[/name] alludes to the yew tree. Again, the w. I think this one might block a future daughter [name]Wren[/name]? But maybe not. [name]Stone[/name] is nice in theory although stoned is negative, but some parents do use this name. [name]Cole[/name] is sort of trendy now but more classic than it seems, and alludes to coal. I can see [name]Cole[/name] and [name]Wren[/name] as siblings. [name]Cale[/name] Also very on style right now, and plausible as a nickname for [name]Caleb[/name] or [name]Calvin[/name]. Alludes to the veggie of course, which is kind of an odd heritage, but I think [name]Cael[/name] is an angel name as well, and since it’s on style it’s not like naming him Cabbage or something. [name]Rock[/name]/[name]Brock[/name]/[name]Rocco[/name] are all a little much, but also doable.
Someone was posting on here that [name]Huon[/name] is a kind of wood that they thought worked as a name. I’m not sure it is, looking around, but maybe it is. [name]Jasper[/name] is one of the rare male gem names. [name]Seneca[/name] is a kind of stone and a [name]Roman[/name] playwright. That -a ending can be hard for boys to pull off, but I knew a guy who carried the name well. NN [name]Sen[/name] is great and covers some of the ground that [name]Wren[/name] does. I can also see someone with this name going by [name]Nick[/name]. [name]Basil[/name] is the herb (diff prn usually though). Kind of old British man, but might be fun on a little guy? Also sounds like Basalt, a kind of rock. Gabbro - a kind of rock. Out there, but maybe? [name]Huckleberry[/name] nn [name]Huck[/name] - a lot, but the nn is good. Obsidian - a lot, but nn [name]Sid[/name] or [name]Obie[/name] or [name]Ian[/name] could be more accessible. [name]Quartz[/name] - awesome in theory, although kind of feminine? Not in sound, but because of crystal. Also sounds like quarts, which could lead to some jokes. Arkose - a rock similar to sandstone. Hits some of the notes of [name]Ambrose[/name]. Marl/[name]Marlin[/name]/[name]Marlon[/name] - Marl is a kind of limestone. [name]Marlin[/name] is a fish. [name]Marlon[/name] [name]Brando[/name] is a bit of a legacy, but it might work. Also very western with Marlboro man, although of course smoking is not a good image to promote for a child! [name]Shale[/name] - a plausible rock name. Maybe a little soft though? Skarn - a “metasomatic rock”, whatever that means : D. [name]Adam[/name] - means earth.
Best wishes!
[name]Lachlan[/name]: means land of lakes. [name]Kai[/name]: means ocean in Hawai’ian and alludes to water in a lot of languages. Down the road, could be really nice with [name]Wren[/name]! [name]Lawrence[/name]: alludes to Laurels, although I’m not sure there’s any good nicknames: [name]Enzo[/name]? [name]Larry[/name] is dated, and [name]Lauren[/name]/[name]Loren[/name] et al is heavily female if that matters to you. [name]Thoreau[/name]: [name]Henry[/name] [name]David[/name] was one with nature, and [name]Thor[/name] is a thunder god. [name]Easton[/name]: like the sunrise in the east… [name]Weston[/name]: like the sunrise in the west… [name]Roscoe[/name]: meaning refers to deer, nn [name]Ross[/name] or [name]Coe[/name] or [name]Ro[/name] could be cute
Thanks everyone for all the thoughtful responses, has given us some names to think on!
I haven’t asked my husband what he thinks, but I like:
[name]River[/name]
[name]Bay[/name]
[name]Ash[/name] - I’m not a big fan but I know my husband likes it as he’s suggested it already, maybe I’ll come around!
[name]Forrest[/name] and [name]Cedar[/name] - I like them both but we don’t have forrests in Australia, just bush (and obviously we can’t call our kid bush…) Same with [name]Cedar[/name], as far as I know, but they do sound really nice.
[name]Linden[/name] - I really like this though I’m pretty sure its not a native… think I will have to go to the library and get a book out on Australian natives?
[name]Slate[/name] - I’ve never considered this before. Think I like it.
[name]Ewan[/name]
[name]Cole[/name] - it does seem a little trendy but it is still rather nice
[name]Jasper[/name] - I’ve thought of this before but keep changing m
[name]Lachlan[/name] - though it is a little popular here
[name]Laurence[/name] I really like it but my hubby doesn’t, we’ve discussed it before. I think [name]Laurie[/name] would be a fine nickname.

[name]Jasper[/name] - I’ve thought of this before but keep changing my mind about it. I thought of [name]Topaz[/name] too, but turns out thats a girls name.the same as
[name]Basil[/name] - I like it but not sure if I could use it for a child. In Australia the herb is pronounced the same as the name. like “Bazzle” not “[name]BAY[/name]-zil”
Obsidian is pretty cool sounding, again not sure if I could give it to a child.
[name]Quartz[/name] is interesting!
I really love the name [name]Marlon[/name], but we already have a daughter with a name beginning with M with an r in it so I think it might be a little close to her name.
[name]Adam[/name] - this is definitely a contender, maybe more so than a lot of the others becauce it’s not as obvious. I just worry that it is a little boring.
[name]Lachlan[/name] - though it is a little popular here
[name]Laurence[/name] I really like it but my hubby doesn’t, we’ve discussed it before. I think [name]Laurie[/name] would be a fine nickname.
[name]Roscoe[/name] - Think I prefer [name]Ross[/name] but its alright
Thoughts I’ve had:
I’ve been thinking [name]Reef[/name] would be nice (as in the great barrier reef) but i don’t think I can get past the fact that I’ve heard it used as a slang term for marijuana. Also we’ve never been there, would love to go, but i think it would be silly to name a kid after someplace youve never been.
[name]Drake[/name] - means male duck and dragon which might impress my husband. Not sure if I can imagine it on a kid… kind of remind me of a guy from a trashy romance novel or something
Thought of [name]Clay[/name] too. Again, not too sure
thats all I can add!
[name]Glad[/name] you’re finding it useful! And good to know you’re in Australia : D. [name]Lachlan[/name] being popular is a consideration I don’t think of by default from the US, same as Bazzle/Baysil : D. When you wrote about getting a book on Australian trees, I thought of Coolibah from Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name] :). Maybe [name]Cole[/name] actually touches on that a little too?
[name]Reef[/name] - well, just don’t name him [name]Reef[/name] [name]Stone[/name] : D! And no sister [name]Mary[/name] [name]Jane[/name]! Hmmm…[name]Reeves[/name]? a surname, alludes to [name]Reef[/name] but the marijuana thing is much more subtle. Is it a surname with any good meaning for you by chance? [name]Reed[/name]? Actually a nature name itself.
[name]Adam[/name] doesn’t really strike me as boring at all, but then at the end of the day I’m actually conservative in taste despite some of my suggestions and likes (I can get “out there” in theory, but more like, how I “truly” think, you know?). Maybe [name]Adam[/name] Obsidian strikes an excellent balance ; )? [name]Adam[/name] [name]Clay[/name] would be a very meaningful name.
Atoll? I think this or maybe Atul actually is a name in some languages, dunno much about it just that I’ve heard it; of course, in the US (forgive my ignorance, maybe in Australia too?), a tool is, you know, a jerk (is that a pan-English one? You know, a not-nice guy, a mean man).
[name]Darwin[/name]? He wrote a lot about nature, and apparently a lot about coral reefs!
