[name_m]Hi[/name_m] guys,
So basically I am thinking about naming my son after a [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars character.
It’s from a [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars book that my dad and I used to read together all the time.
Now before you hit the deck and say “WHAT [name_m]HOW[/name_m] COULD YOU [name_f]DO[/name_f] THAT!?” [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry, it is not an obvious [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars name at all.
It’s ‘[name_m]Jacen[/name_m]’ , spelled with a C.
I really love it and let’s be honest I wouldn’t have to tell people where I got it from unless they ask, but if they did ask and I told them, would people think that’s wierd?
[name_m]Just[/name_m] don’t want to make a mistake! Thanks guys
Hey there, I really don’t think it’s weird to name your child after a [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars character
However, to save the boy a lot of trouble, I would just spell it [name_m]Jason[/name_m].
I knew a boy named [name_m]Jacen[/name_m] and everyone always commented on the ‘silly’ spelling.
[name_m]Jacen[/name_m] Solo is technically a [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars fanfiction character now, which is a bit nerdier than naming your son after a canon [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars character. I think it’s fine though.
Since [name_m]Jason[/name_m] is really common, I doubt it would ever be questioned, but people will assume you just decided to be “unique” with your spelling.
I think sometimes people can be too harsh about this topic, so I’ll go ahead and say I think you should go for it! My dad and I read the [name_f]Narnia[/name_f] books together and as a result I love the name [name_m]Caspian[/name_m], so I can totally relate to this. If it has sentimental value to you, and you love the name, I see no reason not to use it. Why would picking a random name from a baby book be better than picking a name from a book you love?
Regarding the spelling, I’m assuming that your hesitation comes specifically because you love the name with a “C” (rather than the conventional spelling), and that it means more to you spelled that way. Honestly, I think you should spell it the way you love it. I don’t think [name_m]Jacen[/name_m] is really that weird actually, and now that I’m thinking about it I actually like it better than [name_m]Jason[/name_m]–it seems much more unique and modern to me. I don’t see why anyone would think it’s weird.
So, I say use it, because it’s pretty cool and way better than most names out there anyway :).
I don’t think it is weird to name a child after a character from a work of fiction.
Honestly, though, I do think the spelling [name_m]Jacen[/name_m] will be extremely annoying for him. He will constantly have to correct people because everyone will spell it [name_m]Jason[/name_m]. And those that haven’t heard of the obscure [name_f]Star[/name_f] Wars character will think you just don’t know how to spell the name or do know but chose to change it to be ‘unique’. The explanation makes it better, really, but I do kind of pity a boy who has to live with this name. It’s a ‘high hassle’ name in my opinion.
If it has meaning to you, then go for it. It fit well with other modern names. I’m assuming you are aware of spelling issues. Usually, those names we have loved for years go beyond issues with spelling and prn.
I don’t think it’s weird, and the spelling doesn’t look bad. I actually didn’t make the connection to ‘[name_m]Jason[/name_m]’ when I first saw it facepalm. Kind of like [name_f]Leah[/name_f] and [name_f]Lia[/name_f], I can’t stand the “eah” ending, but absolutely love the ‘ia’ ending. I say go for it, especially because it has that special meaning to you.
I think that where you found the name is totally fine. I agree with other posters that the spelling will be a hassle, but that’s ultimately up to you how you want to spell it.
A family that went to my former elementary school had an [name_m]Anakin[/name_m] and a [name_f]Mara[/name_f] [name_f]Jade[/name_f]. They are teenagers now.
It’s an uncommon spelling, but everyone knows a [name_m]Jason[/name_m]. I think it’s fine.
I think it’s an awesome idea and I love the connection you have with the name. Also, I agree that the spelling will be a slight issue but not enough to not use it. There are tons of names with multiple spellings like [name_f]Lauren[/name_f]/[name_f]Lauryn[/name_f], [name_f]Molly[/name_f]/[name_f]Mollie[/name_f], [name_f]Kate[/name_f]/[name_f]Cate[/name_f], etc. I have a name that literally nobody knows how to spell and it’s honestly never bothered me.
