Nameberry addict here … and totally stumped on names for baby #2, due this summer. Big brother, [name_m]Clive[/name_m], is 3. I am trying to narrow down girls names if we have a daughter - but have absolutely NO names for a possible little brother.
I would like it to be something with a strong and retro feel - something somewhat jazzy, or vintage.
Nothing in the top 1,000. Nothing hard to pronounce - and frankly, nothing too-too trendy (we live in NYC and names that are not yet on the top 1,000 are everywhere here - ones that I love, but that are just too popular in our neighborhood - like [name_m]Dashiell[/name_m], etc.)
If anyone has any good ideas - I’m all ears! THANK YOU!
What a great list! Oh how I love [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], nn [name_m]Wes[/name_m]. And [name_m]Thelonious[/name_m]. And [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]!
What about:
You guys are awesome. Some of these are ones that have popped up for me before - I love [name_m]Errol[/name_m] but my husband has vetoed it. Grr. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] and [name_m]Dov[/name_m] - do you guys think [name_m]Dov[/name_m] would be weird for a family that has no Hebrew/Israeli ties? I love [name_m]Harvey[/name_m] too. Does it sound “cool” or “hip” enough to you guys? [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Thelonious[/name_m], but my husband is obsessed with Monk, so it might be too much for those who know us. [name_f]Love[/name_f] [name_m]Giles[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], and [name_m]Piers[/name_m] is interesting. What do you guys think of [name_m]Pearce[/name_m]? My last name starts with “[name_m]Pears[/name_m]” and I wonder about [name_m]Pearce[/name_m] - but does it sound too wasp-y/preppy? Of the ones above: [name_m]Harvey[/name_m], [name_m]Dov[/name_m], [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m], [name_m]Giles[/name_m], [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] … any strong preferences?
I cannot thank you enough!
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m] is beautiful. Usually I slightly prefer the Scottish form [name_m]Alasdair[/name_m], but given that [name_m]Clive[/name_m] is an English name it might be nice to keep continuity…
[name_m]Clive[/name_m] and [name_m]Dov[/name_m] are matchy but not in an obvious way. I think it’s an elegantly simple name, and it’s naturey without being hippyish, as [name_m]Clive[/name_m] is.
You can’t go wrong with [name_m]Evander[/name_m]. It feels powerful because of [name_m]Evander[/name_m] of Pallene (and [name_m]Evander[/name_m] Holyfield) but also gentle because it sounds like “wander.”
[name_m]Harvey[/name_m] is retro coolness. A classic “guy” name with tons of warmth. He knows everybody in the neighborhood by name. Like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] but cooler.
[name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] is a love of mine, but it is definitely an acquired taste. I’d say it’s the most flavorful of your choices. I see [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m] as an old-fashioned international man of mystery, fluent in many languages, wearing a trench coat, dark hair full of Brylcreem.
So…
No-fail: [name_m]Evander[/name_m], [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]
[name_f]Love[/name_f] or hate names, but I’m in total support: [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], [name_m]Laszlo[/name_m]
Great although quite symmetrical with [name_m]Clive[/name_m]: [name_m]Dov[/name_m] (this could also be nice as a middle name)
Not as wild about [name_m]Giles[/name_m] (too butlery to my ears) or [name_m]Piers[/name_m] (doesn’t work with your last name.) Oh wait, did you mean Pears___ is your maiden name? In that case, I’m in favor of [name_m]Piers[/name_m]. It is waspy-preppy but it might be a nice way to incorporate your family name. The spelling [name_m]Pearce[/name_m] looks off-kilter to me though.
