Please excuse my edit
[name]Agnes[/name]- it’s a little too old sounding to me, but I do like the nickname [name]Aggy[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]- it’s just too common now
[name]Anna[/name]- same as [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]- very cute
[name]Claire[/name]- kinda boring
[name]Clara[/name]- a little better than [name]Claire[/name], but still not feeling it
[name]Eleanor[/name]- same as [name]Claire[/name] for me
[name]Eliza[/name]- I like it, it’s pretty
[name]Eloise[/name]- love it
[name]Fiona[/name]- it’s an okay name
[name]Flora[/name]- NMS at all, sound too much like Floor
[name]Florence[/name]- same as [name]Flora[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]- don’t like it, I prefer [name]Francine[/name] or even more, [name]Francesca[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]- I would be mad at my mom for naming me this
[name]Greta[/name]- it’s okay, but almost too old and boring
[name]Harriet[/name]- it just doesn’t sound like anything special or different/unique
[name]Hazel[/name]- pretty
[name]Lily[/name]- very cute; perfect as a young girl and as a woman
[name]Louisa[/name]- don’t like it; makes me think of [name]Louisiana[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]- over used in my opinion
[name]Luna[/name]- this name has grown on me
[name]Margaret[/name]- another over used, boring name
[name]Martha[/name]- definitely not; another name I would be mad at my mom for
[name]Mary[/name]- completely over used
[name]Matilda[/name]- I like it
[name]Minerva[/name]- way to harsh for me
[name]Miriam[/name]- not really liking this one
[name]Rose[/name]- too common, how about [name]Juniper[/name]?
[name]Temperance[/name]- I don’t like that it has the word “temper” in it; it’s just too much like an adjective
[name]Vera[/name]- Strong, but feminine, although I wouldn’t use it
[name]Vivian[/name]- cute, especially if you call her [name]Vivi[/name] for short
[name]Zelda[/name]- all I can think of is my brother’s video game, so it’s a no for me
I’ll keep it short and just pick my top ten!
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name]
I kept the ones that I find pretty and are usable but unusual. You have amazing taste, I’d just really really cut out [name]Temperance[/name] x
This would be my top 10:
[name]Eleanor[/name]- classic, strong and feminine
[name]Freja[/name]/[name]Freya[/name]- powerful and beautiful with a touch of the exotic, at least here in [name]Canada[/name]. I do like the [name]Freja[/name] spelling; to me it just further emphasizes what I love about the name.
[name]Beatrice[/name]- also classic and pretty
[name]Hazel[/name]- warm, friendly vintage vibe
[name]Minerva[/name]- I love the goddess association and it has a pretty sound
[name]Louisa[/name]- another classic with a lovely sound
[name]Frances[/name]- strong, rarely heard vintage name
[name]Vera[/name]- same as [name]Frances[/name], and I love the connection to WW2-era singer [name]Vera[/name] [name]Lynn[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name]- has history but feels spunky rather than old. and I love the song Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name] even though I have no ties to Australia whatsoever
[name]Alice[/name]- simple and sweet. It makes me think of [name]Princess[/name] [name]Alice[/name].
Wow, you have a beautiful list of names! I’ll try and help in narrowing it down but that’s going to be hard, they’re all lovely.
[name]Agnes[/name]: I like it, but not top ten I think. Hard to pick a nickname for it, which is important to me!
[name]Alice[/name]: Definitely a top ten name.
[name]Anna[/name]: [name]Nica[/name], but simple. I think I’d only use it if it were a family name, though there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just you’ve so many other names on the list to choose from!
[name]Beatrice[/name]: My favourite (though I’m biased, as this is my daughter’s name!) She’s nearing 3 and we’ve never regretted choosing it. Has a lovely meaning, is strong yet pretty, and has a whole lot of cute nicknames.
[name]Claire[/name]: Very pretty and uplifting, but I’d go with [name]Clara[/name] over [name]Claire[/name].
[name]Clara[/name]: I think I prefer [name]Clara[/name] to [name]Claire[/name]. While both are lovely, [name]Clara[/name] is just a little more lyrical.
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name] : Really lovely name, but I’d pick [name]Eloise[/name] over it (unless you happen to love the nickname [name]Nel[/name] as much as I do and want a way to use it?)
[name]Eliza[/name]: Again, beautiful, but I’d go [name]Eloise[/name] first.
[name]Eloise[/name]: Of your E names, this is my favourite. I also prefer it to [name]Louise[/name] and [name]Louisa[/name], if that helps?
[name]Fiona[/name]: Not so much of a fan. It’s ok, but I don’t like it as much as your other choices, and if your brother is threatening Ogress then that would really put me off, even if he is joking!
[name]Flora[/name]: This, or [name]Florence[/name], would be my pick of the F names. So pretty and feminine.
[name]Florence[/name]: I love this too. Also the nickname [name]Florrie[/name].
[name]Frances[/name]: Nice, but not as much of a favourite as [name]Florence[/name] or [name]Flora[/name].
[name]Freja[/name]/[name]Freya[/name]: Another that I’d struggle to keep out of the top ten! This was one of my top picks when I was expecting my daughter. Absolutely beautiful name. I’d go with the y too!
[name]Greta[/name]: Gorgeous! Top ten all the way.
[name]Harriet[/name]: I love this, and [name]Hazel[/name]. They’d both be top ten picks for me but for the nickname thing. I really can’t work out what I’d shorten either too, and I’m the kind of person who loves to shorten names!
[name]Hazel[/name]: See above.
[name]Lily[/name]: Another lovely one, though [name]Lily[/name] and its variants are quite common at the moment. I don’t know whether that puts you off or not? Also, I haven’t checked it to see official popularity ratings, it’s just one I seem to hear often.
[name]Louisa[/name]: Nice, but I’d pick [name]Eloise[/name] over this, and over [name]Louise[/name]. It just seems to have more flexibility as a name to me.
[name]Louise[/name]: See above.
[name]Lucy[/name]: I adore this.
[name]Luna[/name]: Also this, but I do worry that people will think too much of [name]Luna[/name] from the [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] series - she’s a lovely character but slightly mad.
[name]Margaret[/name]: Not one being used often enough at the moment! It’s lovely and shortens beautifully.
[name]Martha[/name]: Nice, though not as good as some of your others, in my opinion.
[name]Mary[/name]: Nice, but like [name]Anna[/name], probably not one I’d use unless it has family connotations.
[name]Matilda[/name]: This is really pretty, but I wouldn’t ever use it as it seems to scream patriotism to me (I’m an Aussie and Waltzing [name]Matilda[/name] is our unofficial national anthem, just in case you’re not Australian too - but then if you’re not, my reason for not using it is void - and even if you are, plenty of Australians love to use it).
[name]Minerva[/name]: Nice, but I think [name]Miriam[/name] is the best of your M names.
[name]Miriam[/name]: Yes, love it!
[name]Rose[/name]: [name]Love[/name] this too!
[name]Temperance[/name]: I’d avoid this one, as I associate it too closely with Bones (which I like, but I don’t like the idea that other people think I chose to name my child after a tv character).
[name]Vera[/name]: [name]Lovely[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]: Nice, but not as good as [name]Vera[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name]: Probably not. It seems a little different to most of your other choices, and though I haven’t read your boy options yet, I wonder if this would work with any future sibling names? Also, it reminds me of the old nintendo game.
So I guess my version of your top ten would be (though it’s actually a top fourteen): [name]Alice[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Clara[/name], [name]Eloise[/name], [name]Flora[/name], [name]Freya[/name], [name]Greta[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Miriam[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Vera[/name].
Wow, thanks so much for the feedback everyone! I like to see what people with different naming styles than me have to say.
@isaberry- You know what, I think I am going to cut [name]Temperance[/name]. I honestly don’t even remember what attracted me to the name in the first place. I just like the “ance” ending, I think. And like emilyc said, I don’t want people thinking I named my child after a tv character, especially when I don’t even watch the show.
@bonfireazalea- Thanks for your wonderful comments. I think it’s interesting that you like the [name]Freja[/name] spelling, too. You don’t think it would be difficult to pull off in the US?
@emilyc- Thanks for taking the time to comment on all of the names! I was really having the hardest time narrowing down my “m” names, but I really think [name]Miriam[/name] is growing on me to be the favorite. I’m not from Australia, so I don’t really associate [name]Matilda[/name] with the song, though I am familiar with it. As for [name]Zelda[/name], I first heard it in the video game, but really started liking the sound after I discovered it was F. [name]Scott[/name] [name]Fitzgerald[/name]'s wife. I’m not sure it’s top 10 material, though.
Wow, almost all your names are nameberry favorites. Here is my top 10:
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name] is a GP name for me.
I love making lists, so I’ll stick to my top 10 of your choices :). You made this very difficult, by the way. Great list!
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name] (love both!)
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Freya[/name] (I’m with you, love it as [name]Freya[/name])
[name]Hazel[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Miriam[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
I like all the names on your list, honestly!
OK first cut leaves me with:
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name] (husband prefers [name]Eleanor[/name], I like [name]Elinor[/name])
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Temperance[/name]
Second round cuts leave me with:
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name] (husband prefers [name]Eleanor[/name], I like [name]Elinor[/name])
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Flora[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Temperance[/name]
I probably prefer [name]Lillian[/name] to [name]Lily[/name].
[name]Harriet[/name] [name]Lillian[/name]
[name]Temperance[/name] [name]Lily[/name]
[name]Martha[/name] [name]Alice[/name]
[name]Elinor[/name] [name]Mary[/name]
[name]Luna[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Flora[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name] [name]Claire[/name]
These are the ones I really like. The ones that I deleted I didn’t like at all! Please let your husband know that using the j could be very confusing for your little girl if you live in the U.S. It may cause many people questioning the spelling of her name constantly.
These are all so lovely!
[name]Anna[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
[name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Luna[/name]
[name]Mary[/name]
[name]Rose[/name]
My top 10 would be:
[name]Alice[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Eleanor[/name], [name]Eloise[/name], [name]Freya[/name], [name]Hazel[/name], [name]Lily[/name], [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Vivian[/name].
The ones I don’t like:
[name]Agnes[/name] - I see no appeal in this name. It’s one of my greatest dislikes. [name]Agnes[/name], all I hear is [name]Aggy[/name] = Eggy, Aggravated.
[name]Florence[/name] and [name]Frances[/name] - Very male feeling, nothing special, nothing worthwhile.
[name]Harriet[/name] - I just get Hairy. It can be pretty.
[name]Margaret[/name] and [name]Martha[/name] - It’s plain as ever to me.
[name]Temperance[/name] - It just feels like a fad due to the show Bones.
[name]Zelda[/name] - [name]Way[/name] too gamer.
dovah, you’re welcome. [name]One[/name] of the things I love about [name]Freja[/name]/[name]Freya[/name] is that it’s practically unheard of where I live- I’ve never met or even heard of one [name]IRL[/name]. The J makes it even more unusual. Now that I think about it, pronunciation could be a problem at first- I only got it right away because I’m really into horses and many riders are Northern European. But I live in a really multicultural area where we see unusual names with unintuitive pronunciations all the time. Once people get to know you, it’s not a problem.
[name]Agnes[/name] - I just love the way this sounds. People may think you’re crazy, and it may help to be able to say she’s named after great-grandma or something
[name]Beatrice[/name] - I think some people have to see this one in action to believe how sweet [name]Bea[/name] is on a LO.
[name]Clara[/name] - I love the way it sounds like its meaning. Wish we could use this, unfortunately rhymes with my name. Boo.
[name]Flora[/name] - So sweet.
[name]Frances[/name] - Pretty without being frilly. [name]Frankie[/name] has so much spunk. [name]Love[/name]!
[name]Harriet[/name] - I used to get hung up on this name having [name]Harry[/name] in it. Now I find it all kinds of appealing. Can’t wait to meet a little [name]Harriet[/name]!
[name]Luna[/name] - This one never gets old for me.
[name]Matilda[/name] - Dignified and super spunky at once. So many wonderful nn options!
[name]Miriam[/name] - Classy and sweet. [name]Miri[/name], [name]Mimi[/name], [name]Mim[/name] - yes!
[name]Vera[/name] - [name]How[/name] is this name not back en force? It so sophisticated and stylish, but simple/understated at the same time. I often wish I’d been named this!
So I put these in order of my personal preference for first names.
[name]Zelda[/name]- 1 Yes. This is divine. Old world elegance and eccentricity and strength all rolled into one beautiful name.
[name]Minerva[/name]- 2 Fresher by far than [name]Athena[/name]. I love the sound of it, love that it contains “nerve” and that it’s an intensely powerful name that can be given a cute, ladylike, and almost ironically diminutive nickname ([name]Minnie[/name])
[name]Harriet[/name]- 3 [name]Harriet[/name] The Spy was one of my childhood heroines. [name]Harriet[/name] has so many excellent namesakes. It’s aggressively no-nonsense, yet has nice flow, rhymes with chariot, and you get [name]Hattie[/name] too if that’s your thing.
[name]Beatrice[/name] (I love this name, but most of my family hates it)- 4 The “[name]Bea[/name]” sound at the beginning just slays me. The name has an amazing balance of delicacy, crispness, and regal dignity.
[name]Alice[/name]- 5 I’m fairly obsessed with [name]Lewis[/name] [name]Carroll[/name], so this one melts my heart. I do hate how trendy it is right now.
[name]Greta[/name]- 6 [name]Greta[/name] [name]Garbo[/name]. [name]Greta[/name] is sexy, yet sweet, yet also kind of punk-rock in that it’s almost got “grit” in it. A fine, sharp little name.
[name]Margaret[/name]- 7 I have really warmed to [name]Margaret[/name] because it’s a name I may use as a middle to honor a relative. The image I have of [name]Margaret[/name] is… contemplative, kind of internal, dark yet warm, like mahogany. It’s a substantial name, with many inspiring namesakes. I suppose you could use [name]Greta[/name] as a nn for [name]Margaret[/name] and get two of your faves for the price of one.
[name]Lucy[/name]- 8 This name is forever noble to me, because of the [name]Narnia[/name] books. It’s adorable yet dignified, and has a wonderful sense of self-containment about it… like a small, precious, and beautifully-wrapped present.
[name]Vera[/name]- 9 Such simplicity and lovely restraint to this name. [name]Truth[/name]! [name]Vera[/name] is a pleasure to say, and it also makes me think of green things because of “ver…” Some points lost after seeing the movie [name]Vera[/name] [name]Drake[/name], most of which I’ve blocked out… except something about her having a cheese-grater in her makeshift doctor bag.
[name]Eliza[/name]- 10 [name]Love[/name] the Z. This name is cool without trying. It’s old-fashioned but not fusty.
[name]Miriam[/name]- 11 Kind of comically ladylike to me, but I find it really sweet. I’d love to meet a little [name]Miriam[/name].
[name]Florence[/name]- 12 I find this name lush, yet very respectable. My associations are [name]Florence[/name] Nightingale, starched nursey cheerfulness, and [name]Italy[/name] in full bloom.
[name]Temperance[/name]- 13 I prefer [name]Vera[/name]. Or for a similar feeling, [name]Constance[/name] or [name]Tacita[/name]. But it’s an interesting name, and refreshing.
[name]Luna[/name]- 14 Not as substantial as some of your others, but probably a really fun name to have. Voluptuous and velvety for such a short name.
[name]Clara[/name]- 15 Very simple and maybe not as layered as some of your others, but clear as a bell and very graceful.
[name]Frances[/name]- 16 Not the prettiest name, imo, but all the Franceses I know are hyper-intelligent, cool people. The -ces ending gentles it.
[name]Hazel[/name]- 17 I’m really fond of the sound of this one, but it’s just too trendy for my liking.
[name]Rose[/name]- 18 Ok maybe [name]Rose[/name] should have gone up at like… 15. It’s such a direct name. [name]Love[/name] that about it. Unabashedly feminine. Ok actually it’s great. But not in the middle- sacre bleu!
[name]Agnes[/name]- 19 I had a boyfriend who wanted to name his firstborn [name]Agnes[/name], no negotiation. We parted ways. Still, it has the intriguing GN sound. It’s awkwardly pretty. But it feels expected to me these days.
[name]Matilda[/name]- 20 Trendorama. So many little [name]Brooklyn[/name] hipster babies running around with this name where I live. Too bad because it’s whimsical and crisp.
[name]Eloise[/name]- 21 Maybe this name isn’t that trendy, but I have been hearing it everywhere. To me it feels like it’s on the edge of trendiness. Otherwise, adorable, a gem. Who doesn’t adore [name]Eloise[/name] at the Plaza?
[name]Eleanor[/name]/[name]Elinor[/name]- 22 I’m so sick of it. I find its earnestness obnoxious, self-righteous. Oh wow that was judgmental! [name]Lenore[/name], somehow, is pure deliciousness to me, but I find [name]Eleanor[/name] a total yawn.
[name]Flora[/name]- 23 [name]Flora[/name] is actually kind of cool. I want her to have a twin sister named [name]Fauna[/name]. [name]Just[/name] a tad insubstantial imo.
[name]Vivian[/name]- 24 Getting sick of [name]Vivian[/name]. I find it a little dreary for a name that means “life.”
[name]Fiona[/name]- 25 This one should be a little higher up in the order. It has a nice, rolling sound and an interesting history. I just find it very neutral, not fresh to my ears.
[name]Freja[/name]/[name]Freya[/name]- 26 This goddess is a good one. The name itself I find too wispy. I prefer [name]Frida[/name] for the [name]Frida[/name] [name]Kahlo[/name] association, but I don’t think that’s your style.
[name]Claire[/name]- 27 Nice that it’s so close to “clear.” But does this name really thrill you?
[name]Louisa[/name]- 28 This one should go above [name]Claire[/name] I think. Somehow, I much prefer the Italian/Spanish [name]Luisa[/name]. Delicate. And less wheezy.
[name]Mary[/name]- 29 Well, if you’re [name]Christian[/name] and this name is important to you, then absolutely go for it. It’s definitely a choice to give your daughter a simple, recognizable name. It is strong and graceful, but not at all surprising.
[name]Anna[/name]- 30 Ok well it’s a palindrome, so that’s something. And there’s The [name]King[/name] And I, and [name]Anna[/name] Karenina. Beyond that, I find [name]Anna[/name] totally blah.
[name]Lily[/name]- 31 So overused. Not so substantial imo.
[name]Louise[/name]- 32 I’m biased- bad association with this name. I can’t judge it. It makes my ears ring.
[name]Martha[/name]- 33 Frump and more frump.
Sorry to ramble on. What a fun list!
These ten are my favourites from your list. They could all do with more love!
[name]Agnes[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]/[name]Louise[/name]
[name]Margaret[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name]
My top 10 from your list would be, in order:
[name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name]
[name]Claire[/name]
[name]Fiona[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Anna[/name]
[name]Freya[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name]
I really dislike [name]Eloise[/name] - I know how it is meant to be pronounced but I real it as ee-loy-ss every time I see it and I don’t know why.
I also don’t like virtue names such as [name]Temperance[/name].
[name]Matilda[/name] is overdone here in Australia and the NNs [name]Mattie[/name] and [name]Maddy[/name] are everywhere.
The rest don’t bother me either way.
This would be my top 10:
[name]Eleanor[/name] [name]Freja[/name] [name]Agnes[/name] [name]Florence[/name] [name]Louisa[/name] [name]Matilda[/name] [name]Rose[/name] [name]Vera[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]
For an eleventh and twelth I’d slip in [name]Temperance[/name] and [name]Zelda[/name] because they’re just so bold and interesting. As for the rest of your list, there are many other gems but some in the likes of [name]Alice[/name], [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Lucy[/name] I’m beginning to find a bit boring. But that’s simply a matter of picky personal taste so don’t mind me
I really love [name]Freya[/name], and it happens to be my favourite on your list, but like your husband I’ve fallen in love with variations like Freija and [name]Freia[/name]. I think it goes hand in hand with my fascination for all things Scandinavian.
Edit: Whoops, just realised I only gave a top 9. So add to that Temperance
Thanks so much for all the positive feedback! I was really pleasantly surprised to see what everyone had to say about some names, particularly [name]Freja[/name]. My husband and I sat and picked away at the list, and we have finished with a top 13. The goal was, of course, 10… and we didn’t want repeat initials… but we had a harder time letting some names go than others, so 13 will work for now.
I just wanted to say that you guys really helped a lot. We took your comments into consideration when forming the list. Also, [name]Freja[/name] didn’t make it to the Top 10 because I still couldn’t get on board with the “j”. It just reminds me of fajitas.
The Top 13:
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Clara[/name]
[name]Eleanor[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name] (I needed to keep spunky [name]Eliza[/name]. I could choose between this and [name]Eloise[/name], as DH just wanted [name]Eleanor[/name]. In the end I had to pick [name]Eliza[/name] because I like spunky over cute)
[name]Frances[/name]
[name]Greta[/name]
[name]Hazel[/name] (This is actually a family name for me. This is not why I selected it, as it’s not really important for me to use family names, but it is incredibly important to DH and this is probably the only reason the name is on the top list for him… I should have just told him all of my favorites are family names)
[name]Lily[/name] (a family name for DH, so it stays despite its popularity. Possibly a double first name [name]Lily[/name] [name]Frances[/name])
[name]Mary[/name] (DH loves plain [name]Mary[/name]. Possibly a double first name with [name]Alice[/name])
[name]Matilda[/name] ([name]Just[/name] couldn’t get rid of spunky [name]Matilda[/name])
[name]Vera[/name]
[name]Vivian[/name]
[name]Zelda[/name] (The surprise favorite for DH. I was really ready to get rid of it, even though I love the idea and sound of it. We may only use it if we select other “off beat” names for possible siblings. I was glad to see so much support for it.)
