Need advice on alliteration for name of first child!

Hello everyone, I’m new here but love this website and find it very in tune with my taste a lot of the time.

My husband is very keen on [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] for our first child if it’s a boy. He/she is due in 3 weeks. We don’t know the sex.

However, my husband’s last name, which will be at least part of the kids surname, has two L’s. Think along the lines of Lawley, Loxley etc.

What are your thoughts on this choice?

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Without knowing your actual surname, I think it would be just fine. [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] “Lawley” sounds handsome to me. Perhaps an L-less middle?

I think its fine! [name_m]Just[/name_m] no L middle names.

Agree with the above! Sounds really pretty

Thanks all. You don’t think it sounds a bit [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] comics baddie - like [name_u]Lex[/name_u] [name_m]Luther[/name_m]? That was my initial thought.

I personally love alliteration. I’m an H H and have never gotten any comment other than my name sounds like a movie star. So only positive comments in my books. I didn’t go [name_u]Lex[/name_u] [name_m]Luther[/name_m] at all - [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Lawley (for example) doesn’t give me any weird associations. If you love it, use it!

I’ll be the sole dissenter and say an L first name with a double L last name is a bit much. I think [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Lombardi is fine and even catchy, but [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Lolardi is just too many Ls. Plus, some languages don’t have the L sound, so people with certain accents or speech impediments may find “[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Lawley” painfully unpronounceable.

That said, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. If you’re sold on [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] and you both love the name, go for it. If you’re between [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] and another name you like equally, it could be a tiebreaker, but otherwise it’s fine.

i think it sounds great!

I have an alliteration name and really dislike it. But if it doesn’t bother you and you really love it you should use it.

My partner is a [name_m]Matt[/name_m] Mc. I love his name!
I think people are too concerned about names and lastnames sometimes. Anyways, by repeating it (which will happen a lot), it will flow perfectly well for you, your son and your family.
Have you ever heard: “What? Charlie Chaplin / Janet Jackson / John [name_m]Lenn[/name_m]on / Benjamin Franklin, oh my god, the name and lastname don’t flow together”. Probably never

I agree with pp’s, I don’t think it’s that bad, especially if you love Lucian more than any other name! Congratulations

I think [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] “Lawley” or “Loxley” or the like sounds just fine. The endings of the names is usually where I get hung up with repetition and [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] has a different sound at the end than “Lawley” or “Loxley,” so you’re good. I don’t think it sounds particularly [name_f]Marvel[/name_f] villain-esque. lol I think it sounds more along the lines of [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] hero and I mean that in a good way. It sounds handsome, sophisticated. =]

I like it. I don’t see the slightest issue if it sounds good to you two. I come from a family with a lot of M’s in the family. [name_f]Mercedes[/name_f], [name_m]Massimo[/name_m], [name_f]Marina[/name_f], [name_m]Mauricio[/name_m], etc. and a big M Italian last name. I have never for a second stopped and said, wow, my dad/aunt/uncle/cousin’s name is weird, with so many M’s. I think they sound awesome, and I would happily pick something like [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] for a daughter if I had a child and kept my last name.

My boyfriend likewise is A + A, and the last name almost ends in an A as well. Again, it has never even come close to being on the radar as a problem.

It being a problem for people who can’t pronounce L’s properly seems like a non-issue to me.

[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] is nice and if your last name sounds like the examples then I think it actually sounds very handsome. I’d go for it, personally, without a doubt.

As others have said, it is a lot of L but not totally over the top, so I say use it if you don’t like anything else as much. Maybe have a backup to bring to the hospital just in case? [name_m]Julian[/name_m] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] have a similar vibe to me.

I agree with @claireelisewren!

I think it’s fine. Alliteration is only weird when the names are too close or rhymey ([name_m]Peter[/name_m] [name_u]Parker[/name_u], [name_u]Madison[/name_u] McGinty), if the sounds are different enough I see no problem about it. I even know a girl whose initials are AAAA

It doesn’t really matter what his real names are, because we know him as “[name_u]Charlie[/name_u] [name_m]Chaplin[/name_m]” and nobody seems chocked or bothered.
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Lawley, even though there are 3 L, is definitely not a problem for me. I compare [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] Lawley to [name_f]Janet[/name_f] [name_m]Jackson[/name_m], and not to [name_m]Lowell[/name_m] [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]
It’s definitely a matter of taste

Wow, thanks all for the very helpful opinions. It’s so hard to make a decision like this and I’m aware that [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] is a latecomer to this game (and also on the rise, so we have to be aware of the “trendy factor”). I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] but the husband can’t get over cat connotations. And to those who have said it sounds “handsome” or like a [name_f]Jane[/name_f] [name_u]Austen[/name_u] hero - sounds good to me…
Watch this space. (we’re in trouble if we have a girl - still no names, might try the girls’ names forum!)
