Need Advice!

So, We thought we had picked two names and would wait to see what our little one looked like once she arrives. My husband has suddenly become super passionate about a new name: [name]Eloise[/name]! I do love it but I have two stumbles with the name. First, my four year old daughter absolutely adores the [name]Eloise[/name] books and movies and I don’t want to, in a way, take that away from her by giving her a baby sister with the name of her favorite character. She thinks it would be great, but who knows if she really gets it.

Second, my father is putting a lot of pressure on me to use a family name from his side as he says his legacy is dying out (all daughters, and all grand-daughters…poor guy!) I totally understand his need/want for this but the names on his side are HORRID and fusty! His name is [name]Phillip[/name], and I guess we could use [name]Phillipa[/name] for a middle, but does that go with [name]Eloise[/name]?

Sorry to be so long winded. I guess, I’m looking for opinions/suggestions for a middle name with [name]Eloise[/name] if we use it. Our other options are:

[name]Amelia[/name] [name]Spencer[/name] (after my mother, which leaves my father,s side out again)
[name]Charlotte[/name] (my husband no longer likes this and is all for [name]Eloise[/name])
[name]Eloise[/name] ???

Help! I’m due in 10 days!

Oh, I love the idea of [name]Phillipa[/name] [name]Eloise[/name] soooo much. That way you kill two birds with one stone by using something your dad likes up front and something your husband likes in the middle without using a first name that might take away from your daughter’s special books. But, if you’re not feeling a particular name then you don’t have to use it, and the way you make it sound is that there are other girls in the family to use family names. I was wondering if [name]Spencer[/name] is special for anyone? If not, you could always go with [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Eloise[/name].

[name]Eloise[/name] is a character, I think it’s kind of silly to be worried about taking away from that by naming your daughter it…considering that it’s your other daughter’s sister who’d have the name. Kids aren’t dumb, I think if she’s saying it’d be great, then she means it. She’s 4, they can understand a LOT at that age.

Ehhh, I’m not a fan of [name]Phillipa[/name] and it seems unoriginal way to honor. Why not take the meaning? [name]Phillip[/name] means “lover of horses”, so go with that. [name]Rosamund[/name] means “protector of horses”, [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Rosamund[/name] is an idea.

[name]Eloise[/name] is much better than [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Spencer[/name], and [name]Charlotte[/name], your hubby’s right on point. Stick with that choice.

Personally, I don’t respond well to family pressure or guilt in the naming process. My [name]SIL[/name] was named two family names to please family members, and to this day my [name]MIL[/name] wishes she would have held her ground and used a name that they loved rather than caving into the pressure. Now, if you love [name]Phillipa[/name], then go for it. [name]Just[/name] make sure you and the hubby are happy with the name. The family will get over it and love the baby no matter what you name her. Or at least that is how it has worked with my family.
I think [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] is beautiful. Or [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Eloise[/name].
What about [name]Elodie[/name], if you aren’t crazy about the character connection with [name]Eloise[/name]?
As for family names, are there any initials you could use to honor someone? [name]Philippa[/name] isn’t a bad name, but I don’t think it goes well with [name]Eloise[/name].

I dunno if you could slip [name]Philomena[/name] past your dad as an adequate close-enough for [name]Phil[/name]-, but it’d allow [name]Mina[/name] as a nickname. I actually rather like [name]Philippa[/name]/Phillippa though, [name]Pip[/name] or [name]Pepper[/name] could be cute nicknames.

If you’re fine with [name]Spencer[/name] as a mn then why not [name]Philips[/name]?
[name]Amelia[/name] [name]Philips[/name] is stylistically the same as [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Spencer[/name]. Actually I think [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Philips[/name] sounds a whole lot better, and [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Philips[/name] is nice too

I love the pp’s suggestion of [name]Philomena[/name]. It’s a beautiful overlooked name. I still think it’s kind of bold up front, but [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Philomena[/name] is lovely.

[name]Eloise[/name] [name]Philippa[/name] is fine.
[name]Eloise[/name] [name]Philippine[/name], I find very pretty and striking! Wdyt?
[name]Eloise[/name] [name]Phyllis[/name] is another option…dated but kind of cool in a weird way?
Or even just [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Philip[/name] : D.

What are some other names on that side? Surely something must be updateable or more tolerable in the middle?

[name]Eloise[/name] is lovely, and I do think your four year old will be totally fine with it…
noticed all your names are actually kids’ books characters ([name]Charlotte[/name] from [name]Charlotte[/name]'s web, and [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Bedelia[/name]…).

: D.

I love [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Spencer[/name]! What about [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Spencer[/name]? or [name]Amalia[/name] [name]Eloise[/name]?

Thanks, everyone! Some very lovely suggestions. I had thought of [name]Philips[/name] as an alternative but wasn’t quite sure. [name]Truly[/name] appreciate the feedback!

[name]Love[/name] [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Spencer[/name]! Def my fav. I don’t love [name]Charlotte[/name]. [name]Eloise[/name] is cute, and I don’t think it would take away from your DDs love of the books and movies. [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Phillipa[/name] works well to me. You could also do [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Pippa[/name]. You could do a double mn with [name]Eloise[/name] [name]Phillipa[/name] [name]Spencer[/name] or [name]Amelia[/name] [name]Spencer[/name] [name]Phillipa[/name] to get your dad and mom in there. [name]Just[/name] a thought.
