Need Family Naming Advice

We’re considering using my grandfather’s name if we have a boy, however, there are some family politics that may come into play.

My grandfather was [name]Dawson[/name] [name]Jr[/name]., his first son was [name]Dawson[/name] III, and his first son (my cousin) was [name]Dawson[/name] IV. [name]Dawson[/name] IV had a girl and twin boys, none of which he named [name]Dawson[/name].

My grandfather was an important person in my life and we would love to honor his memory in this way.

Is it appropriate for us to even consider using this name? We would not name the baby [name]Dawson[/name] V (just [name]Dawson[/name]). I would ask my grandmother and likely my uncle/cousin for their approval before moving forward as well.

And one last question: how do you feel about using the name [name]Dawson[/name] if we have a GIRL?

Thank you!

I would definitely ask your cousin - but I would assume since he didn’t use the name for his two boys that he might not be planning to use it.

I don’t horribly mind [name]Dawson[/name] on a girl, especially since it does have special meaning. I think it has the same vibe as [name]Drew[/name], [name]Evan[/name], and [name]Emerson[/name] which are all used on girls.

If your cousin is fine with it, then I think it should be fine. I think [name]Dawson[/name] would be a great name for a girl! The only problem is that it may be weird for her/your cousin/his children for them to share a name. So I guess it depends on how close you are to this cousin and if you think that situation would bother you.

You have just as much right to [name]Dawson[/name] as anyone else in your family. Go for it.

Thank you everyone for your sound advice. Much appreciated!

You could always ask your cousin how he’d feel/his opinion on you using it, or just put [name]Dawson[/name] in the middle.

To answer your last question I do not like [name]Dawson[/name] on a girl at all. Especially since it means “[name]Son[/name] of [name]David[/name]”.
Maybe use a name close to it: [name]Dawn[/name] for example. Also, if your cousin is not okay with you using [name]Dawson[/name] as a first, why not [name]David[/name]? Or better yet use your grandfather’s middle name, which I find more endearing than a first.

I think it seems perfectly fine for you to use the name [name]Dawson[/name], especially since your cousin has had two boy’s and not used the name. However, it’s not great on a girl at all. I’d only consider it for a middle name for a girl or a variant such as [name]Dawn[/name].
