Need help! Boy due in December

I have been trying to come up with a boy’s name that I love for months. Girl’s names are much easier for me–I already had one picked out before I got pregnant. I’d like to at least have it narrowed down to 3 or so names before he’s born  .

  • We have a daughter named [name]Ellie[/name]
  • MN will probably be [name]Edward[/name]. Possibly [name]Dale[/name], but pretty sure we like [name]Edward[/name] more. [name]Both[/name] are names from dh’s family.
  • Last name starts with “sh” sound and is two syllables… think kind of like [name]Sherman[/name], but that’s not exactly it
  • DD has a middle name from my grandma. It is very rare–after much searching to try to figure out the origin and meaning of her mn, I’ve been unable to find it on any list or name website. I’ve always liked that she is probably the only person with the name [name]Ellie[/name] M------- C--------. Since my son’s mn will not be unusual, I would ideally like to give him a more unusual first name.

OK, here’s the list.

Current favorites:
Dexton–nn [name]Dex[/name]?
[name]Silas[/name]–really like this one, but it doesn’t flow with last name… [name]Silas[/name] Sh-------?
[name]Max[/name]–dh and dd love this name. I liked it more before we starting using it to try it out, and it just didn’t “feel right”
[name]Kelton[/name]–definitely considering it, but not loving nn Kel and wondering if everyone would call him that
[name]Kyler[/name]–like it a lot and like nn [name]Ky[/name]. But I’ve read that lots of Kylers don’t like their name bc it’s always mistaken for [name]Kyle[/name] or [name]Tyler[/name]
[name]Owen[/name]–love the name but afraid it’s going to become very popular, and dh isn’t crazy about it
[name]Cayson[/name]
[name]Cal[/name]–[name]Callan[/name] or [name]Callum[/name]? is this weird with mn [name]Edward[/name] because of the Twilight character [name]Edward[/name] [name]Cullen[/name]?

Also:
(Like these enough to keep them on the list, but right now I’m thinking we probably won’t use them. Very well might change my mind though.)
[name]Oz[/name]–nn for ? [name]Oswald[/name] or ?, like the sound of [name]Oz[/name] but maybe too weird for us?
[name]Asher[/name]
[name]Alden[/name]
[name]Clay[/name]
[name]Trent[/name]
[name]Dorian[/name]
[name]Malachi[/name]–dh not crazy about it
[name]Wilder[/name]
[name]Finn[/name]
[name]Ben[/name]
[name]Solomon[/name]
[name]Ephraim[/name]
[name]Maddox[/name]
[name]Colton[/name]
[name]Sullivan[/name]
[name]Every[/name]–really like the sound of this for some reason… if it weren’t one of the most common words in the English language…
[name]Jonah[/name]–like it but dh and I have names starting with J, so [name]Ellie[/name] would be the only non-J name in our family. is this weird? Am I way overthinking this? lol

Open to suggestions and criticisms!

Some thoughts:

Dexton–nn [name]Dex[/name]? - quite like this one, or [name]Daxton[/name]. I’ve also recently seen [name]Dex[/name] as a nickname suggestion for [name]Declan[/name] if you like that.
[name]Silas[/name]–NMS
[name]Max[/name]–if you’re wondering if it’s the one, make sure it’s on your short list and decide if you still feel his way when you have an actual person to attach it too. It’s a good name, has the same kind of vintage but trendy sounding feel that [name]Ellie[/name] does.
[name]Kelton[/name]–Not my fave on your list
[name]Kyler[/name]–apart from name confusion, also feels a little like a girls name to me.
[name]Owen[/name]–[name]Love[/name] [name]Owen[/name] too, maybe your dh just needs more time to get used to it?
[name]Cayson[/name] - falls a little into the [name]Jayden[/name] type category for me, not a huge fan
[name]Cal[/name]–[name]Callan[/name] or [name]Callum[/name]? love both but would probably do a bit of a double take if I heard it with [name]Edward[/name]. Luckily middle names aren’t often used, so wouldn’t be a daily issue.

[name]Oz[/name]–nn for ? [name]Oswald[/name] or ?, like the sound of [name]Oz[/name] but maybe too weird for us? NMS, because I’m Aussie
[name]Asher[/name] - quite like, but would give you a repeating SH sound
[name]Alden[/name] - Not sure. I think I want to like it, but can’t quite…
[name]Clay[/name] - It’s OK
[name]Trent[/name] - also OK, I’d prefer [name]Trenton[/name] nn [name]Trent[/name] or [name]Tristan[/name] though
[name]Dorian[/name] - NMS
[name]Malachi[/name]–NMS
[name]Wilder[/name] – OK, but all I can think of is [name]Van[/name] [name]Wilder[/name]
[name]Finn[/name] - nice, but if you’re worried about names gaining popularity this one is currently rising
[name]Ben[/name] - I like [name]Ben[/name], would also be cute with [name]Ellie[/name]
[name]Solomon[/name] - Feels a little too serious. [name]How[/name] about [name]Samson[/name]?
[name]Ephraim[/name] - NMS
[name]Maddox[/name] - NMS
[name]Colton[/name] - was recently pot off [name]Colton[/name] by the one on Survivor. Still love [name]Cole[/name] though, have you considered that?
[name]Sullivan[/name]- the more I think about it the more I like it
[name]Every[/name]–I think you’d constantly have to explain this one. I’d lean towards [name]Everett[/name] instead
[name]Jonah[/name]–[name]Love[/name] [name]Jonah[/name]!

Some more suggestions:
Winchester nn [name]Win[/name]
[name]Dalton[/name] (play on [name]Dale[/name], and you seem to like the -ton ending)
[name]Damon[/name]
[name]Devon[/name]
[name]Leo[/name]
[name]Lincoln[/name]
[name]Cameron[/name]

I like [name]Owen[/name] [name]Edward[/name] but not sure that siblings of [name]Owen[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name] are a perfect match due to the vowel sounds of the O and the E.

Like these

[name]Calvin[/name] [name]Edward[/name]
[name]Colton[/name] [name]Edward[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name] [name]Edward[/name] nn [name]Ozzie[/name]
[name]James[/name] [name]Edward[/name] or [name]Jamison[/name] [name]Edward[/name]
[name]Ashton[/name] [name]Edward[/name]
[name]Connor[/name] [name]Edward[/name] or [name]Edwin[/name]
[name]Jasper[/name] [name]Edward[/name]

rollo

I think [name]Max[/name] and [name]Ellie[/name] would make such cute sibling names! If you think you want a more unusual name perhaps you would prefer a longer version and then you could use [name]Max[/name] as his nn? [name]Maxwell[/name], Maximillion, [name]Maxfield[/name], [name]Maxton[/name], or even [name]Maddox[/name] would work.
I think [name]Maxwell[/name] [name]Edward[/name] is lovely. Good luck! =]

Thanks for the input! From the suggestions, I like…
[name]Dalton[/name], and I hadn’t thought of it as related to [name]Dale[/name] but that’s a great point… except that I already have a nephew named [name]Dalton[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name], great way to use the nn [name]Oz[/name] without giving him a really odd name
[name]Maxton[/name] ! had not seen this one before, and it’s great because I do seem to like the -ton ending

[name]Owen[/name] and [name]Max[/name] are the ones we’ve been bouncing around the most, and it seems like people who have replied are gravitating toward them too? Part of the problem might be that we’ve received too much input from family. Lesson learned about not discussing names with people until the baby’s here, I guess.

[name]Just[/name] to get it off my chest–the most annoying comments so far:

“[name]Max[/name]. Um, okay. I’d keep looking. What else are you thinking about? I knew someone 10 years ago who named their son Maximillion. Can you believe that? Maximillion?? [name]How[/name] disgusting! I can’t believe she did that to her kid! It’s a ridiculous name!” Uh thanks. We were considering Maximillion.

“You know, everyone thinks they’re going to be cool and give their kid an unusual name. The thing is, everyone ends up picking the same unusual names and then they’re the most popular names. Like [name]Owen[/name]. I have a neighbor named [name]Owen[/name]. [name]How[/name] ignorant of people to think they’re naming their kid something original when they aren’t. I like [name]Wyatt[/name].” Uh thanks again. We didn’t tell him we wanted an original name. I just said I liked [name]Owen[/name]. Last year, [name]Owen[/name] was #44 and [name]Wyatt[/name] was #48. Not that big of a difference. [name]Just[/name] because you know one kid named [name]Owen[/name]… ?

Haha yeah other family member’s opinions are the worst! Sorry that you have to deal with that, but just remember the most important thing is that both you and your husband find a name you like as much as [name]Ellie[/name] and that it is the best fit for your son.
Once he is born everyone will learn to accept his name as a part of who he is and it will start to sound perfect to them too.
I’m glad you liked [name]Maxton[/name], it seemed to be right up your alley. Good luck! =]
