Hello. We are so undecided and need your help choosing our baby girls first name! Can you please share your thoughts on the following names for a girl being born and raised in the US.
Aria - too popular? Ranks 23, but according to “playground analysis” considering all its spellings it ranks 10 most popular name. Does it mean another Aria in each years class?
Lilia - is it too similar to many other names like Lila and Leyla? Also is it too confusing on the screen?
Ayla - with Isla both names are becoming very trendy?
From outside the US, so weigh accordingly, but my order of preference is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], [name_u]Aria[/name_u] and then [name_f]Ayla[/name_f].
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is fresh, feminine and delightful (with some nice nn options of [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Lia[/name_f], [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] etc). It is similar to [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Lilla[/name_f] etc but it’s still distinct - just part of the L trend!
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] is obviously associated with air, opera, and probably [name_u]Arya[/name_u] [name_u]Stark[/name_u] (from GoT) in terms of popularity (and has the strong/ lioness symbols as well).
[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] fits in with names like [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Isla[/name_f] etc but I find it a bit too broad sounding, and like you’re saying “aye, la?”. It’s just not as pretty or substantial as to my ear but it would sound better in an American accent than an Aussie one.
Thank for the feedback. I like [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] a lot, but when I researched about it, I found that it can get miss pronounced! Weird but apparently it does. Thats why i have some doubts. Yes, meaning of [name_u]Aria[/name_u] is beautiful! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Ayla’s sound.
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] - I have never met one (and I know a lot of kids!) so it doesn’t read very popular to me, but I’m not in the US so it may be different there.
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] - again, never met one, but I think there is the potential for confusion with [name_f]Lily[/name_f] and [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] as well as the names you mentioned. It’s such a pretty name though - my favourite of all the [name_f]Lily[/name_f] names.
[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] - I know 3 girls named [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter has 2 in her class (so they are [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] Last-Initial). She also has an [name_f]Isla[/name_f] in her class. It does get confusing! This is the one I’d drop to last place, personally, but it may not be the case where you are.
I haven’t researched this but you could go [name_f]Lillia[/name_f] to more clearly direct? I like the refinement of [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] but [name_f]Lillia[/name_f] may be the same pronunciation just less confusion for Lila/Lyla sound?
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is great! It is soft and romantic and reminds me of pianos, snow and palaces and forests. To me it feels very international and elegant and has its own personality.
I think [name_u]Aria[/name_u] has the most straightforward spelling and pronunciation. Yes it is popular but there won’t be one in every class. Maybe you can look up how popular it is in your states statistics.
as being born in the US i’ve know lots of lily’s / liliana’s but only ever met one lilia and i love that name alot! and i don’t think it’s confusing. as for aria i believe i’ve met a couple but never met an ayla, but i like it!
I like [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_f]Ayla[/name_f]. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is beautiful and on trend, [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] is simple, stylish, and adorable
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] is far too popular for me
It is the 14th most popular name in my state, but I dont know how to interpret that as potential number of kiddos in a school or class with the same name.
I LOVE [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and [name_u]Aria[/name_u]. [name_f]Ayla[/name_f] is also pretty but could have more spelling confusion with [name_f]Isla[/name_f], [name_f]Ajla[/name_f] and [name_f]Eila[/name_f]. All three names are lovely though you can’t go wrong.
Speaking from a U.K. perspective so maybe can’t fully speak into yours but I know 1 [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and know of 3 more [name_f]Lilias[/name_f]. I think it’s recognisable enough and very pretty. I actually don’t personally know any Lilys, I know of a few but have never met one. And Layla/Luna is not super popular here or in terms of playgrounds doesn’t feel super popular. I’m not often coming across them. [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] wouldn’t feel like a sea of the same but more unique yet familiar, which I love about it.
Again never met an [name_u]Aria[/name_u] (in the U.K.) I love the name though so pretty.
[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] I have met a few but as I said it’s more confusing with the spelling variations, when spoken I would automatically write [name_f]Isla[/name_f]
[name_u]Aria[/name_u] is too popular for my taste. I know of a lot of little girls named [name_u]Aria[/name_u] and wouldn’t want to add another one to the mix myself.
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] is similar to [name_f]Lily[/name_f] which is very popular. But I think it sounds different enough that it can stand on it’s own! I think it’s a really pretty name!
[name_f]Ayla[/name_f] does sound very similar to [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. I definitely know a lot more Isla’s than Ayla’s, but when calling them it would sound close. I like the name, but would worry about popularity.
So, my favorite it [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] and would def use it! Then ayla is my second favorite. [name_u]Aria[/name_u] is just too popular for me.
Aria ~ I think she’s lovely bright, summery, has pretty associations with music and air. Very fashionable. My friend has a daughter with this name and I know an Aria who is the same age as my brother (19 years old) so for me Aria feels familiar. Regarding popularity this is from a UK perspective but statistically names aren’t as popular as they were when we were at school. Your child won’t be one of 5 Aria’s due to people using such a vast range of names. Unless the name is within the top 5 of your area it’s rare to come across repeated names. In my daughter’s nursery there is not one repeated name so I really wouldn’t worry about popularity to much.
Lilia ~ I love this name! I chose Lilia for my daughter and I’m really glad I did to me she’s elegant, feels international, graceful, has pretty springtime energy and feels distinctive yet familiar due to popularity of Lily. I often call my daughter Lily and I love that I get to use such a pretty name yet she’s set apart from the Lily crowd through the name being a nickname for a rarer variant. Still her name does get mispronounced a lot. I’ve also been asked if I made her up however these comments have been made by some judgemental individuals that did have underlines of other stuff going on. My daughter is of mixed heritage and some people are just something else but that’s a story for another day. Anyways It’s very frustrating and upsetting! I think in my case her slightly complicated surname (on official paperwork it’s hyphenated but in day to day she just uses her first surname which is East African so not familiar to Brits) doesn’t help matters. Furthermore, Lily is popular but her variants are not so I think this adds to the confusion as people in the UK are just not used to seeing the likes of Liliana, Lilian and Lilia for example. In the US the variants aren’t as rare so I wouldn’t worry to much about that she’ll be more recognisable. Still all I do is correct people and move on doesn’t make me regret the name as honestly I get so many compliments.
Ayla ~ I find Ayla more appealing than Isla which is a name that I encounter on a daily basis. I prefer the sound of the repeated A’s I think it’s more attractive. I also love the meanings surrounding Ayla ‘oak tree, moonlight and halo’ they are so earthy and majestic.
However despite seeing all the appeal with this name she is my least favourite out of the three options she’s pretty but does feel trendy.
