Need Help From Teacher Berries

My husband and I are both teachers in the U.S. so choosing baby names has always been hard for us because many names have a lot of associations with kids that we have taught.

My son’s name is [name_m]Eoin[/name_m] and we are currently pregnant with number 2 (we don’t know the gender). Since his name is so Irish, we had always considered a lot of Irish names for a possible second baby. One we had always liked is [name_f]Meara[/name_f] for a girl.

Last year, I actually had a [name_f]Meara[/name_f] in my class. She was a great kid, so negative associations there, but is it weird to name my possible baby girl [name_f]Meara[/name_f] now? I have a co worker that said she thought it was a little weird. But is that because it is more of a “unique” name? If I named her [name_f]Sophie[/name_f], would it be weird since I have had so many girls with that name in the past or no because that name is so common? [name_m]Can[/name_m] I help that I have a similar name taste as one of my parents? Both of her girls have Irish names.

I felt like we had been set on a girl name and could now focus on boy names, but now I’m second guessing.

it’s not too weird imo. you’ll teach hundreds of kids during your career - one day you might get an [name_m]Eoin[/name_m] in your class, or a child with the name you pick instead of [name_f]Meara[/name_f]. if you love it, i’d say use it!

Not a big issue in my opinion! She just happened to have a name you like, and you should still go ahead and use it if you love it.

I don’t think it’s weird! Like others have said, you might have a [name_m]Eoin[/name_m] in your class one day too. Chances are you’ll have kids with almost every name option at some point in your career. If you love the name and it feels right for you I say use it! :grinning:

A lot of names from my list are names I’ve heard on students while working in schools. [name_f]My[/name_f] oldest is [name_f]Noemí[/name_f], which I first heard on a little girl in an elementary school, but spelled Nohemy. This baby will be named [name_f]Magali[/name_f], which I met a little girl with this name while working in a preschool class. The [name_f]Magali[/name_f] I met will be about 10 years older than this baby. [name_f]My[/name_f] middle daughter’s first name [name_f]Kiana[/name_f] is a name that a girl at my church had, but spelled differently. Sometimes we have to meet someone with a name to notice the name, it’s different than just looking at the name on a paper.
