Hello, All! I am currently expecting my second son on [name_f]October[/name_f] 2, 2018 and my husband and I are having a bit of difficulty deciding on his name. We took forever to decide on our first son’s name, as well, but at least he had established middle names – this kid has nothing yet!
My oldest son’s name is [name_m]Garrett[/name_m] [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] [name_u]Rhys[/name_u]. [name_m]Garrett[/name_m] is a name we both liked. [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] honors my father (who resembles St. [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m]) and my grandfather (whose middle name was [name_u]Reece[/name_u]).
For this baby boy, we have the first name narrowed down to [name_u]Britton[/name_u] or [name_u]Jensen[/name_u]. [name_u]Britton[/name_u] seems more rare and is a name we both immediately liked, but [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] could possibly honor my husband’s dad ([name_m]John[/name_m]) and his grandmother ([name_f]Lois[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]) (and [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] was on our list the first time around, but my husband was not keen on it until I explained the honoring connections – we had planned to name our daughter [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], but it looks like we will never get to use that name as we are planning to be done after this child). I guess I am fretting that I have persuaded DH into a name he does not really like! It does not help that my oldest son says he prefers [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] over [name_u]Britton[/name_u], but he’s also only 3 years old…
We have absolutely no middle names selected. Given that we honored my family members with our first son’s name, we wanted to honor my husband’s family members with this baby boy’s name, but his family tree is lacking in names that appeal to us (or he has certain family members he does not want to honor due to personalities, etc.). We want to stick with 2 middle names like we gave our first son.
Some middle names that we are considering are:
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (On our family trees)
[name_m]Ambrose[/name_m] (On my family’s tree, but DH is not keen)
[name_m]Augusten[/name_m]
[name_m]Cavanaugh[/name_m]
[name_m]Charles[/name_m] (DH’s dad’s middle name, but common and a bit dated)
[name_m]Hayes[/name_m]
[name_u]Jericho[/name_u] (No one in our family seems to like this name, but we do)
[name_u]Lee[/name_u] (My middle name is [name_f]Leanne[/name_f] and I had 2 grandfathers with the middle name [name_u]Lee[/name_u], so this name would honor me/my family, but an overall boring/common middle name pick – are there variations?)
[name_m]Pierce[/name_m]
[name_u]Sterling[/name_u]
We are open to suggestions that fit the trendiness of the names and/or their origins, but all input is certainly welcome!
I prefer [name_u]Britton[/name_u], but I like [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] as well. But I wouldn’t force a name that you don’t both love just because it’s an honor name, especially not a first name. I also really love [name_m]Hayes[/name_m] (from your list) with [name_m]Garrett[/name_m]!
You could just use [name_m]John[/name_m] (or [name_m]Charles[/name_m] as you mentioned it being his middle) to honor his dad and possibly [name_m]Louis[/name_m] to honor his grandmother [name_f]Lois[/name_f]?
If you were open to your middles as firsts, I really like [name_m]Hayes[/name_m] [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] or [name_m]Hayes[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Jenson[/name_m]
My favourites on your list are [name_m]Pierce[/name_m]/[name_m]Piers[/name_m], [name_m]Hayes[/name_m], and [name_u]Jensen[/name_u]. Also [name_m]Cavanaugh[/name_m] would make a wonderful first name, [name_f]IMO[/name_f]. I do like [name_u]Britton[/name_u] as well and I don’t know if you live in an area that always likes to use nicknames. If [name_u]Britton[/name_u] gets shortened it would become [name_u]Britt[/name_u] which reads female to me, although [name_u]Britton[/name_u] is a great name if you can manage to keep the full name. My suggestion is to focus only on choosing the first name that you both love at this point and once it is chosen it will be easier to add the middles that work well with it.
I love both [name_u]Britton[/name_u] and [name_u]Jensen[/name_u], but I think he’ll be called [name_f]Jen[/name_f], or teased in school as [name_f]Jenny[/name_f].
I prefer [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] over [name_u]Britton[/name_u] - what about [name_u]Jesse[/name_u] as an alternative? btw - [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Hayes[/name_m] and [name_u]Sterling[/name_u] are favorite mns from your list
I much prefer [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] over [name_u]Britton[/name_u]. I see it as a more masculine name than [name_u]Britton[/name_u], probably because I have a niece who is named [name_f]Brittan[/name_f].
Since your first son has names in memory of relatives on your side of the family, I think it would be nice to be sure some of the honor names are for relarives on your husbans side for the second child.
I actually prefer [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] by a lot. Britten just makes me think of [name_f]Brittany[/name_f], which - gender conformity aside - I haven’t liked since it was popular when I was a child. Also the only [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] I know of is [name_u]Jensen[/name_u] Button, the Formula 1 race car driver, so that’s a pretty good connection.
There are loads of international variations of [name_m]Alexander[/name_m]. [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] and Skandar are the first two that come to mind, but a quick search will reveal many more. I’ve never liked [name_m]Charles[/name_m] much, but I think a lot of your other options are great.
Also, I agree with a pp that you should take a couple options into the delivery room and see what he looks like when you can finally see him.
