We have two girls, Effie and Imogen. Girl names have never been an issue for us. When we found out that we were expecting a third, we assumed it would be a girl and had already decided on naming her Keeva. We were honestly shocked when the doc said it was a boy at the 20 week ultrasound.
We cannot find common ground on a boy name. I like Rodion, Rory, Felix, Kyrie… I like uncommon names and quirky European names. (I’m Ukrainian and wanted to name our firstborn Olga but my wife refused). My wife likes off-beat names too… for girls. But for boys, she’s more… vanilla? My wife likes more common names and she loves southern names. She likes Beau, Tucker, Norman, Tobias. She LOVES Tyler, but I just can’t fathom naming my son Tyler.
We’ve been at a stalemate for many weeks now, and we’re starting to genuinely worry that our son won’t have a name. Help us Nameberry.
[name_f]Welcome[/name_f] to Nameberry! Here are some I think are a compromise between yours and your wife’s styles that could be both [name_u]Southern[/name_u] or European:
[name_u]Dorian[/name_u]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_m]Atticus[/name_m]
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m]
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] (I really like this one for you!)
[name_m]Stellan[/name_m]
[name_u]Declan[/name_u]
[name_u]Callum[/name_u]
[name_m]Soren[/name_m]
[name_m]Dashiell[/name_m]
[name_m]Rufus[/name_m]
[name_u]Thaddeus[/name_u]
[name_m]Ignatius[/name_m]
[name_m]Raphael[/name_m]
[name_m]Phineas[/name_m]
I like [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. Imogen’s middle name is [name_u]Scout[/name_u], so going with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] might make people think we’re TKAM super fans haha.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Cormac[/name_m]! That’s actually on my list, but again, my wife hates it. [name_m]Ronan[/name_m] is growing on me. I will pitch it to the wifey and see what she thinks.
I know a [name_m]Cormac[/name_m] with the middle name [name_u]James[/name_u] and he goes by [name_m]Cormac[/name_m], CJ, and [name_m]Mac[/name_m]! Maybe your wife would like some of the nickname options since it defintely makes it more common!
One could give the first name (not [name_u]Tyler[/name_u], I agree) and one the middle name.
You could each make a list of 100 names you like and hope for overlap.
[name_u]Or[/name_u] with that list, you could choose a formal name that might have a nn from the other person’s list.
While [name_m]Rodion[/name_m] and [name_u]Kyrie[/name_u] are more uncommon, [name_u]Rory[/name_u] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m] from your list seem pretty basic and like your wife’s preferences so maybe there is more overlap than first thought.
[name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] is a strong contender. It was on both of our lists when we were pregnant with baby #2 (which turned out to be a girl). [name_m]Felix[/name_m] was also on both our lists. Now, I’m not so sure about [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] and she’s fallen out of love with [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. Strange how that happens…
We have 5 dogs and I worry that calling our son [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] might come off as… silly? That’s my only worry. Wife also loves the name [name_m]Shepherd[/name_m] (I don’t mind it) but we have two [name_m]German[/name_m] Shepherds, and same reason with that.
I wonder, if your wife likes [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], you both might appreciate [name_u]Tobin[/name_u]? It feels quite similar to [name_m]Tobias[/name_m], while giving off alittle more of that European vibe you favour.
I would honestly be more inclined to settle on [name_m]Tobias[/name_m] vs [name_u]Tobin[/name_u], though I don’t mind [name_u]Tobin[/name_u]. I think we would inevitably call him Tobbe in either case.
[name_f]My[/name_f] wife loves [name_m]Benji[/name_m] though I worry about the inevitable assumption from people that his name is [name_u]Benjamin[/name_u], which I don’t love. [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is a lovely name, though it’s been tarnished (here in [name_f]Canada[/name_f] anyway) by [name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_m]Kane[/name_m], the hockey player, who is not such a lovely person. I don’t know if it’s fair to judge a name that way, but it’s hard to disconnect those associations.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] that you have so many dogs, I understand wanting to avoid [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m]! [name_m]Wolfgang[/name_m] was on our list for a while too, as was [name_m]Felix[/name_m] but I fell out of love. We were planning to nickname [name_m]Felix[/name_m] “Fox”. But even that might be too much with all your dogs? [name_f]My[/name_f] son is [name_m]Abel[/name_m], which is my favorite - have you considered that?
