Need Help with the Middle

My DH and I are expecting a baby in [name]March[/name] and we’ll hopefully be finding out the gender on the 9th of [name]October[/name]. Yay! We’re pretty set on a boy name, but I’m still debating middle names for our favorite girl name, [name]Alice[/name]. I can’t just wait til the 9th. I have to figure this out now! lol
Our son’s name is [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name]. [name]Both[/name] [name]Benton[/name] and [name]Grover[/name] are family names. [name]Alice[/name], however, is not. Not sure if I should make sure and continue the family theme in the MN spot or just choose something we really like. Anywho, here’s my list. Tell me what you think of them and any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated as well!

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] - [name]Imogen[/name] isn’t a family name either, but I love the combined meaning of the names, “noble beloved child”. Also, I’m a huge fan of [name]Imogen[/name] Heap.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Temperance[/name] - Also not a family name, but my DH is a huge fan of [name]Temperance[/name] and would probably prefer it as the first name for our possible daughter. I like it as well, but just can’t imagine calling my child by it. I think it works OK in the MN spot though.)

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - [name]Elizabeth[/name] is my MN. DH likes this combo, but there’s just something strange to me about naming my child after myself.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Harriet[/name] - I love [name]Harriet[/name]. It’s my DH’s grandmother’s name and she is one of my very favorite people. I would have [name]Harriet[/name] in the first name spot if it weren’t for our last name. She would be very likely to be called “Hairy [name]Man[/name]” if we named her [name]Harriet[/name]. I really like [name]Alice[/name] [name]Harriet[/name], but the Hairy [name]Man[/name] possibility still bothers me because I would often call her by both of her names as I do with my son. I’m just not sure if it’s enough to worry about since most people will call her simply [name]Alice[/name].

Thanks for any input!

I like [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] [name]Temperance[/name] the most.

All lovely names! I like [name]Alice[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Harriet[/name]. And I like all combinations of those three names. [name]Elizabeth[/name] is my middle name too, and my mothers so she obviously did it. And I’m in the boat of deciding whether I will as well. TBH [name]Harriet[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is one of my top contenders.

With that all being said; [name]Alice[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is phenomenal. It oozes class and it ‘looks’ the best.

I like [name]Temperance[/name], but its too heavy on the ‘s’ sound.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] I’m not a fan of.

[name]May[/name] I suggest [name]Alice[/name] [name]Marie[/name]? [name]Just[/name] think it sounds so great together  Otherwise I’d say alice [name]Elizabeth[/name] is great. We gave my daughter my middle name and I think it works. Good luck!

Oh emelis, please use [name]Harriet[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]! If it weren’t for our difficult last name that would have been our daughter’s name. It makes me so sad that we can’t us it. :frowning:

samibee, I agree that [name]Alice[/name] [name]Marie[/name] sounds great, but I have a bad personal association with [name]Marie[/name]. Thanks for the suggestion though!

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] probably does sound and look the best out of all my choices, but isn’t that because [name]Elizabeth[/name] sounds and looks good in the middle name spot with practically every name? As a woman with the middle name [name]Elizabeth[/name] I have met so many others and it has begun to feel like a filler name to me. I think [name]Alice[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is elegant yet a little spunky since I associate the names with [name]Alice[/name] in Wonderland and [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Bennett[/name] of Pride and Prejudice, but it bothers me that they’re both so popular. Especially since [name]Benton[/name]'s name is not popular at all.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name].
[name]Temperance[/name] makes me think of prohibition. Any interest in [name]Constance[/name], [name]Tacita[/name], or Calma? (similar in meaning)

emmabobemma, [name]Alice[/name] [name]Constance[/name] would be lovely. I’ll try it on my DH, but I doubt he’d go for it. He’d be more likely to go for something completely different if he can’t have his [name]Temperance[/name]. We were set on [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] for the longest, but I started pondering other options. Maybe I need to just go back to being set on it.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] is absolutely gorgeous! I love it. They feel perfect together : D.

[name]Temperance[/name] is a great name but I agree with a pp, I don’t know that it’s quite right with [name]Alice[/name] because of the matching endings. It’s not really bad though, just less perfect. But the rhythm of them together really is quite nice.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is very beautiful and I love the tie-in to you, I don’t think it’s weird. I do find the -lice and -liz sequences in both to be a little repeated, and I get what you mean about wanting one name to be at least a little unusual since [name]Benton[/name] [name]Grover[/name] (very handsome!) is.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Harriet[/name] is really quite pleasing and I wouldn’t worry about your last name too much with it. As you say, if you call her [name]Alice[/name] [name]Harriet[/name] it’s fine but it’s hard to imagine others getting [name]Harry[/name] from it if you don’t use it much outside the house.

Are you looking for suggestions? [name]Alice[/name] [name]Isobel[/name] comes to mind. [name]Isobel[/name] is related to [name]Elizabeth[/name] so you have a bit of a family name, and while [name]Isabelle[/name] et al is quite popular, this form is rarer and is visually close to [name]Imogen[/name]. The o would tie in with [name]Benton[/name] and [name]Grover[/name]. Anyway, just a thought.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Henrietta[/name] could also potentially honor [name]Harriet[/name], and be lovely, without the [name]Harry[/name] sound in there.

Jesba, thank you for the comments, suggestions, and the compliment on Mr. [name]Grover[/name]'s name. His name was so easy for us to come up with and we love it so much. He was named before he was conceived! I think that’s why I’m a little frustrated that this babe’s name isn’t just falling into my lap.
It’s very encouraging for me to read what you wrote about [name]Alice[/name] [name]Harriet[/name]. I love [name]Harriet[/name] so much and hate that I can’t use it as the first name. It would make me very happy to use it as the middle. And yet, at the same time, I am still in love with [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]. She sounds like such a spunky girl who won’t take crap from anyone and that is exactly how I want to raise a daughter.
[name]Isobel[/name] is my favorite form of [name]Isabelle[/name] as well. I really like the name, but even when using a different spelling I feel it’s too popular in combination with [name]Alice[/name]. I definitely think I want something a little more “out there” for the MN and [name]Henrietta[/name] definitely fits that bill. I have posted a couple of threads in the past regarding [name]Harriet[/name] and had other Berries recommend [name]Henrietta[/name] as an alternative. I liked the idea, but my DH shot it down. :-/
Maybe I just need to ponder [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] and [name]Alice[/name] [name]Harriet[/name] for a little while.

Thank you, lori johnson! I really like several of your suggestions. I’ll have to ponder those along with [name]Harriet[/name] and [name]Imogen[/name].

I think you should go with [name]Alice[/name] imogen. I feel like we have a lot of similarities- I am expecting a girl march 4th and it was hard for me to settle on a name. I have two other children and both their names were so easy. They were named after my grandmother and her brother so it was easy! ([name]Lillie[/name] and [name]Jack[/name]) but this one Was tricky! My husband loves [name]Charlotte[/name], and I do as well but I was just so concerned about It’s rising popularity. In the end we decided we love the name so much we dont care  I decided to give her a more obscure middle name to balance it out, so she will be [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] and I’m thinking Maybe CC for short. Anyway I say go for a less popular middle name to Offset Alices popularity. Good luck!

I absolutely love [name]Alice[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]! I really wouldn’t try to get hung up on the “filler name” concept. I personally have a “filler name” according to lots of people. My middle name is [name]Rose[/name]. It was my great-grandmother’s name and she was my Dad’s favorite person in the whole wide world. That’s how I wound up with it. If the name has meaning to you and your family who cares what others think? It’s a beautiful name and lots of people like it. That does not make it a “filler.”

If I had to pick a second favorite I’d pick [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]. I really like the way the names flow together, and the meaning which you pointed out I think is really sweet.

I’m thinking I need to just go back to being set on [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name]. I’m known for finding a combo we both [name]LOVE[/name] and then being turned off of it for one reason or another. It drives my DH crazy. lol I was turned off of [name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] a couple of nights ago when we were watching the newest [name]Alice[/name] in Wonderland movie, the one with [name]Johnny[/name] Depp. [name]Alice[/name]'s aunt’s name is [name]Imogen[/name] and she’s a delusional old maid. Yes, she’s not a very influential character in the story, but I just thought my little [name]Alice[/name] will surely see this movie someday and not like that connection. There are so many possible good and bad connections out there though. I think I’m just over thinking it a bit. In my opinion [name]Imogen[/name] Heap is a great connection so maybe that will outweigh the bad. Thank you all so much for your help!

Ooh evetallulah, I really like [name]Alice[/name] [name]Hermione[/name]! I texted my DH and asked him. He didn’t give an outright no. I think he’s pondering it. lol I’m such a bookworm and love the literary associations of both names!

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Imogen[/name] is my favorite-absolutely beautiful! Classic, beautiful, sweet, and spunky! I love it.
