DH and I had a list going for potential names for a second DD: [name]Juniper[/name], [name]Daphne[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name]. We already have a DD named [name]Hazel[/name]. Well, last night, he proclaimed that he now hates these names! [name]Juniper[/name] is too impractical, [name]Daphne[/name] sounds dumb and [name]Fiona[/name] is too prissy. I can kind of see his point. So now we are liking [name]Rosalie[/name], [name]Gemma[/name] and [name]Summer[/name].
My issues with these three are that [name]Rosalie[/name] also seems a bit prissy (although I love the nn [name]Rosie[/name], which is a bit more spunky), [name]Gemma[/name] is maybe too close to the uber-popular [name]Emma[/name], and [name]Summer[/name]…does it read kind of down market and trashy?? I’d love more suggestions on names I might like and your thoughts on this new set of names!
[name]Gemma[/name] and [name]Emma[/name] are extremely different to me, they’re stylistically very similar, but the feel I get and all, very different.
[name]Summer[/name] is incredibly downmarket to me, and [name]Rosalie[/name] is too prissy as a first name to me as well. I love [name]Rosie[/name], or even just [name]Rose[/name].
[name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Gemma[/name] is the best combo imo.
Oh, I really love both [name]Juniper[/name] and [name]Fiona[/name], and they would be great with [name]Hazel[/name]! I like [name]Rosalie[/name] a lot, this is my favourite from your new list. [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Rosalie[/name] would be gorgeous:)
I like [name]Rosalie[/name] the best of those choices, by far - I think it is the most elegant and timeless choice, and I can see it working on both a young girl and on an adult woman. She could be [name]Rosie[/name] as a girl and [name]Rose[/name] or [name]Rosalie[/name] as a professional woman. It is a pretty name that will grow up with her, and I don’t think it’s too prissy. (Feminine names are “in” right now. I don’t think it will read as overly frilly especially given the other names of girls in this generation.)
[name]Both[/name] [name]Summer[/name] and [name]Gemma[/name] are fine in my opinion. [name]Gemma[/name] feels very trendy Anglophile to me. I like it somewhat better than [name]Summer[/name], which I agree is the least elegant of the three choices. It does feel more “down market” in the sense that it is the kind of name I envision younger, less educated parents choosing… but that may be my own stereotypes at work, or maybe it’s just not my style. (?)
If you like names like [name]Gemma[/name], perhaps you’d also like [name]Petra[/name]? It’s also got that spunky European vibe to it. A little more classical but still European with some spunk might be [name]Phillipa[/name], nn [name]Pippa[/name], or [name]Beatrix[/name], nn [name]Bea[/name].
I like [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Gemma[/name] the best too. [name]Rosalie[/name] does sound prissy to me and I have a bad assiciation with that name so Im not a fan. [name]Summer[/name] sounds dated to me and isnt as sophisticated as [name]Hazel[/name] ( which is gorgeous :))
New suggeations:
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Amelia[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Matilda[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Scarlett[/name]
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Olive[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Annabelle[/name]
Good [name]Luck[/name]!
What about [name]Rosemary[/name] as a compromise? While I love [name]Rosalie[/name], I don’t think it really fits right with [name]Hazel[/name]. [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Rosemary[/name] are a great match [name]IMO[/name], with the benefit of the nn [name]Rosie[/name]!
I think [name]Gemma[/name] and [name]Hazel[/name] sound the best together. I also think of [name]Rosalie[/name] as being a sort of prissy/pretentious name.
Personally, I just think [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Gemma[/name] sound the best together and compliment each other well.
I do think that [name]Rosalie[/name] and [name]Summer[/name] (which as another poster phrased it, is the least elegant of the three choices) do sound okay with [name]Hazel[/name].
I love your original choices better …
I never considered [name]Fiona[/name] to be prissy (I know a girly-tomboy named [name]Fiona[/name]; hardworking and positive), but I can see his point with that one. [name]Daphne[/name] is one of my favorite names [name]EVER[/name] <3 And honestly, out of the three, I think Juniper is the best choice with Hazel!
Hazel & Juniper <3
If you HAVE to go with your new list, Summer is my favorite. I prefer Rosalind over Rosalie.
Hazel & Rosalind <3
If im honest, I prefer your first list.
[name]Juniper[/name]- I love this name but when it comes to using it, I have found I’m in the same boat as your husband. But some similar names (to me) are [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Pippa[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Clio[/name], [name]Maeve[/name]. All these I love with [name]Hazel[/name], too.
[name]Fiona[/name]- I don’t find this prissy at all. I think its kinda feisty actually! But do you like any other Celtic, but recognisable names? For instance [name]Sorcha[/name], [name]Niamh[/name]/[name]Neve[/name], [name]Gwen[/name], [name]Roisin[/name], [name]Orla[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]- I like this less than the last two. It reminds me of the word daffy very strongly. Or daffodil, which I find very wordy and not very namey. But, other names which I [name]DO[/name] like and are similar style (or…Greek anyway) are [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Leda[/name], [name]Vesta[/name], [name]Xanthe[/name]
Of your three new ideas, I don’t love any of them: [name]Rosalie[/name] is very saccharine to me; [name]Summer[/name] is a little lacking in class; and [name]Gemma[/name] to me falls into the same bracket at [name]Crystal[/name] or [name]Tiffany[/name]…
Along the same lines of [name]Gemma[/name]- what do you think of [name]Opal[/name], [name]Garnet[/name], [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Isla[/name], [name]Chiara[/name], [name]Briar[/name], [name]Sable[/name], [name]Bryony[/name]
If what you were going for with [name]Summer[/name] was the fresh, bright feeling, how about: [name]Luca[/name], [name]Azure[/name], [name]Celeste[/name], [name]June[/name], [name]Una[/name], [name]Viola[/name], [name]Iona[/name], [name]Martha[/name] (biased on this one)
Aaand names which I associate with [name]Rosalie[/name]- [name]Blythe[/name], [name]Coralie[/name], [name]Colette[/name], [name]Camilla[/name], [name]Pamina[/name], [name]Seraphina[/name] (really like the surprising fit of [name]Hazel[/name] and [name]Seraphina[/name] together)
[name]Hope[/name] this helps. Let us know how you get on with your search
I love [name]Rosalie[/name], but if you’re not 100% with it, how about [name]Rosa[/name]? It’s simple and beautiful, and can still have the nickname [name]Rosie[/name]
I also really like [name]Summer[/name], but how about [name]Autumn[/name] instead? I think it’s really pretty!
i am not a [name]Daphne[/name] fan, but i like [name]Fiona[/name] and really like [name]Juniper[/name], but wouldn’t use it myself…
Combining [name]Fiona[/name] and [name]Juniper[/name], i absolutely [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Junia[/name]! it has a history and is not prissy.
if you love [name]Rosie[/name], you could consider it as a full name. [name]Hazel[/name] & [name]Rosie[/name] is lovely. Another poster is considering [name]Romy[/name],
maybe you’d like that as well. [name]Gemma[/name] is very nice as well. Good luck deciding!
To follow up on the pp, my best friend is called [name]Rosa[/name] and she has always loved her name!
i find it really beautiful as well.
[name]Love[/name] your suggestion of [name]Phillipa[/name] but unfortunately, a very good friend just used this name. As for [name]Beatrix[/name], I’m afraid that [name]Hazel[/name] AND [name]Beatrix[/name] is really too “old lady” together. As my DH says, “Are we running a retirement home??”
[name]Violet[/name] [name]Gray[/name]- great suggestions! I especially love [name]Eloise[/name] and [name]Georgia[/name].
