So last night while talking to my fiance’ about names, I asked him what he thought of [name]Artemis[/name]. He tends to like more “normal” names, so I assumed he’d shoot it down, well he did, but not totally. He said he loved it for a video game character, character in a book or a cat, but not on a person.
He thinks [name]Artemis[/name] = [name]Atticus[/name]. (His friend [name]Atticus[/name] was teased for his name) and fears [name]Artemis[/name] will be another [name]Atticus[/name]…
I was just wondering if anyone knew any Atremis’s and if they were ever teased. Also I’m not involved with younger kids so I don’t know what the new names on the block are. He’s basing it off of the names he grew up with, which I pointed out he never grew up with a [name]Noah[/name], [name]Nora[/name], or [name]Nina[/name] which are his nephew and nieces names. I never grew up with them either.
I was just wondering if [name]Artemis[/name] is safe to use. It’s been a gp of mine for a long time, but I never thought of using it on a kid, but it’s the only other name we both like besides [name]Luna[/name]/Lunete. I still can’t get him on board with [name]Euphemia[/name].
I’m also a little worried about it appearing too corny since my name is [name]Diana[/name]. With [name]Luna[/name] it’s a little less obvious so I’m okay on that.
From all of the greek mythological names ([name]Athena[/name], [name]Hera[/name], [name]Artemis[/name], [name]Hestia[/name], [name]Demeter[/name], etc) I always think that [name]Artemis[/name] is the most unusable one, followed by [name]Demeter[/name] (without variation/modification to [name]Demetria[/name] or something).
I love [name]Luna[/name], [name]Selene[/name]/[name]Selena[/name], [name]Cynthia[/name], and your name, [name]Diana[/name], but never [name]Artemis[/name].
I think it depends on your location and your crowd. Our group of friends has kids with tons of crazy names so while [name]Artemis[/name] would definitely be different I think it would be accepted. More and more kids are getting stranger names and I think teasing over it will grow less and less. When the bully’s name is [name]Dashiell[/name] it’s harder to imagine him making fun of a kid named [name]Ezekiel[/name].
[name]Artemis[/name] still sounds a bit feminine to me, despite [name]Artemis[/name] Fowl being a boy. [name]Arty[/name] and Tem and [name]Ari[/name] and [name]Aris[/name] and Ret all seem like nn options. It’s not on my list, but it’s not in the crazy realm either.
I think [name]Artemis[/name] is a little over the top for a first name but as a middle name it would be fine. [name]Selene[/name] would be a good alternative, as it’s also the name of a moon goddess.
I think [name]Artemis[/name] could work and she could shorten it to [name]Ari[/name], [name]Missy[/name], or maybe even something like Artsy, which could be really cute. The connection to your name really stuck out to me but that could be a cute connection. I think [name]Luna[/name] is a nice fit with [name]Artemis[/name], and [name]Diana[/name] for that matter too I actually like [name]Euphemia[/name] the best of the 3, it is so beautiful to me, but I really like the [name]Moon[/name] theme you have going on here too! There is no way I could get my husband to agree to [name]Euphemia[/name] either.
Here are some other names you might like that stick to you theme.
[name]Ayla[/name]
[name]Celestia[/name]
[name]Cynthia[/name]
[name]Livana[/name] - I really liked this one for our twins but my DH shot it down because he says it sounds too much like [name]Nirvana[/name], but I would love to see someone use it!
[name]Nova[/name]
I think of the character from It’s Always [name]Sunny[/name] in [name]Philadelphia[/name]. She’s a very “distinct” character. I doubt any of your child’s peers will conjur up this image… but if their parents do…
I have a cousin called [name]Artemis[/name] and she doesn’t get teased. Personally I love the name. It is not overly weird and if the child/hubby aren’t too keen there are a lot of nn options such as:
[name]Missy[/name]
[name]Art[/name]
[name]Emi[/name]
I think that name teasing has gone down a LOT in the past decade. No one at my elementary school (Or at the two other elementary schools in my town) got teased for their name, but that might be partly because most of the kids in our area are bright enough to realize that kids don’t choose their names.
[name]Artemis[/name] is NMS, but I think there’s not as much of a chance of teasing as there once was.
Aww- [name]Artemis[/name], [name]Diana[/name], and [name]Luna[/name]- That reminds me of [name]Sailor[/name] [name]Moon[/name]! <3
Personally, I love the name Artemis. I do think it reads like an adult’s name rather than a child’s, but as mentioned, there are a plethora of great nn options for both genders. Even though I have read and love Artemis Fowl, I think that Artemis reads as a feminine name, but that may be because of its place in mythology. I haven’t been around children lately enough to comment on name teasing, but if Artemis were to go by a more mainstream nn, you could probably avoid teasing all together. However, if Artemis Fowl is popular with kids at school, maybe Artemis would be a “cool” name and not worthy of teasing?
Fiance’ is still on the edge since he can’t see it as a name for a kid, but keeping it on the list in case he changes his mind. He said it might grow on him. He also is starting to think it doesn’t sound “feminine” even though it relates to the goddess. But we’ll see.
I also wasn’t intentionally looking for moon names, it just kind of happened, lol! [name]Artemis[/name] and [name]Luna[/name] are the only two I like. I’m not a fan of the others. I think we would probably use one over the other, not both since it might be overkill given that my name is [name]Diana[/name]. Although [name]Luna[/name] and [name]Artemis[/name] would make a cute twin set We might use [name]Artemis[/name] as a middle name as well. And if not, it’ll make a great name for a future cat!
As for nicknames, [name]Ari[/name] would by my top choice. [name]Missy[/name] just sounds kind of like a snobby name. [name]Artie[/name] sounds to boyish for my tastes.
I agree with thenamegame… conjures up an image of a character on “Its Always [name]Sunny[/name] in [name]Philadelphia[/name]”. Not entirely negative, just not an excellent association.
I can’t help but think of really unattractive old ladies. That’s my gut reaction. Despite the meaning, it feels very masculine, which normally I feel good about for girl’s names, but not in this case.
IDK about [name]Artemis[/name]. [name]Even[/name] though it is a goddess name, it feels distinctly masculine. I know a mom who recently had twin boys and named them [name]Apollo[/name] and [name]Artemis[/name] (I know so cheesy but that is what she did!) It just seems heavy for a girl, especially next to [name]Luna[/name].
