I’m due any day and need real advice on selecting a boys name. I have total name apathy except I have a ton of “rules”. I don’t know exActly what I like but I know exactly what I don’t.
Can’t start with M. My daughter’s name starts with M ([name_f]Maren[/name_f]), as welll as our last name - 2 syllables
Can’t end in the “E” sound. ie [name_u]Cody[/name_u],
Nothing popular ([name_u]Aiden[/name_u]), unisex ([name_u]Avery[/name_u]), traditional ([name_m]Nathan[/name_m], [name_m]Zachary[/name_m]) or religious.
I really like ethnic sounding names. We are Norwegian, all of us are tall/blonde/blue. Most Norwegian sounds are awkward.
I love [name_m]Rafael[/name_m] but it does not match our heritage. Same with [name_u]Zion[/name_u]. Funny because they are both religious in origin.
Here is my current list (in no particular order):
[name_m]Eero[/name_m]
[name_m]Will[/name_m] people say this correctly? Like [name_m]Arrow[/name_m]?
[name_m]Bram[/name_m]
Again, will people say it correctly? Like [name_m]Brahm[/name_m].
[name_m]Johan[/name_m]
No one seems to like this one.
[name_m]Von[/name_m]
Is it too short?
[name_m]Boden[/name_m]
Popular clothing line in Europe.
[name_m]Nash[/name_m]
Too American sounding?
Dagr
Too Norwegian sounding?
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m]
Endre
I like it with the E but hate it with an A. By sound everyone will assume its with an A.
I am open to breaking a rule for the right name. What are your thoughts? I feel lost. Are there any good names on this list? Which would you chose, if any?
[name_m]Eero[/name_m] - I think the pronounciation is rather intuitive but I’m sure some people will struggle with it
[name_m]Bram[/name_m]
[name_m]Von[/name_m] - though I prefer the [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] spelling
[name_m]Boden[/name_m] - you might also like [name_m]Bowen[/name_m], Bowden, or [name_m]Bowman[/name_m]
[name_m]Nash[/name_m] - being American I’m not exactly sure what “too American” sounds like, but I find [name_m]Nash[/name_m] rather dashing in a roguish way
[name_m]Atlas[/name_m] - [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] [name_m]Atlas[/name_m]
I’m not at all a fan of [name_m]Johan[/name_m], Dagr, or Endre. [name_m]How[/name_m] do you feel about [name_m]Viggo[/name_m], [name_m]Soren[/name_m], [name_m]Luka[/name_m], [name_m]Ronan[/name_m], [name_u]Rohan[/name_u], or [name_m]Liev[/name_m]? Sorry if those aren’t at all what you’re looking for… Good luck!
I like the [name_m]Vaughn[/name_m] spelling too but it is Welsh for small. [name_m]Von[/name_m] is Norse for hope. Much better! I feel like I can find a problem with any name, which is why this naming process has been so hard. I’ve made more progress today than I have had in the last 3 years. I really just want a good maybe list for when he arrives. We will chose something then. I wish my husband had more of an opinion. It’s not that we don’t agree on names, it’s that nothing seems to excite us like our daughters name. Your suggestions are great!
i am assuming you live in an English-speaking country?
i had [name_m]Von[/name_m] on my almost-short list. love it. for something longer, i considered Vonin. both are Icelandic for hope, which might be a bit cheesy to Icelandic ears - but pronounceable in English and certainly beautiful.
i would like Dagr if spelled Dagur - makes it pronounceable (also, Icelandic again). sometimes adjusting a foreign spelling a little bit is all you need to make it usable in English.
i like Endre, just like it is. beautiful!
[name_m]Eero[/name_m], i think, people would pronounce EE-roh in English. if it’s actually pronounced like [name_m]Arrow[/name_m], i think it would need adjusted spelling if you wanted to avoid confusion…
[name_m]Bram[/name_m] is easy to correct in pronunciation, if people don’t pronounce it like [name_m]Brahm[/name_m] right away.
[name_m]Nash[/name_m] strikes me as a Western, Cowboyish name. does not sound Norwegian to me?
I love [name_m]Eero[/name_m]! I can’t use it, but I wish I could. They may be some correcting he’ll have to do when people say his name, but I think that happens a lot for a lot of names and shouldn’t be a deterrent. At least, I’ve always had to correct spelling and/or pronunciation of my first and last name (which I always thought were pretty easy), but it’s never bothered me - I actually always thought it was funny (but that may just be me).
From your choices, I particularly like [name_m]Bram[/name_m] and [name_m]Von[/name_m].
[name_m]Bram[/name_m] - I think that most people will pronounce this correctly, plus it’s a strong and handsome name.
[name_m]Von[/name_m] - [name_f]Love[/name_f] it! I love that it is short, easy to say and easy to spell. The meaning of hope is great.
I like [name_m]Boden[/name_m], [name_m]Nash[/name_m], and Endre from your list. All very cool names that seem to fit your style/rules and go well with your daughter’s name.
Really like [name_m]Eero[/name_m] with your daughter’s name. It will get mispronounced, but I don’t think that’s a huge deal. I also like the suggestion of [name_m]Soren[/name_m] – very strong-sounding.
